Origins: On 6 January 2007, Knoxville, Tennessee, residents Christopher Newsom, Jr., 23, and Channon Christian, 21, went out for a dinner date at a local restaurant, then headed to a friend's house to watch a movie. They never came back.
When the couple had failed to return by the following morning, their parents notified police. Christopher Newsom's body was found near some railroad tracks in East Knoxville that afternoon, but Channon Christian remained missing. A trace run on Christian's cell phone helped authorities locate her abandoned vehicle the next day, and fingerprints raised from an envelope inside the automobile led police to the residence of 25-year-old Lemaricus Devall "Slim" Davidson, where they discovered Christian's body stashed inside a large trash can and covered with sheets.
The details of the crime as they emerged in the press were horrific (albeit somewhat sensationalized). News account said that carjackers had taken Christian's vehicle at gunpoint, bound and blindfolded the couple, and transported them to Davidson's residence. At that location, Newsom was raped (in front of Christian) by multiple assailants,
his penis was cut off, he was shot multiple times, his body was set on fire, and, finally, his corpse was taken away and dumped alongside railroad tracks. With Newsom out of the way, the perpetrators next focused their depravity on Christian. Over the ensuing two days, they beat her, gang-raped her, urinated upon her, cut off one of her breasts (while she was still alive), and poured bleach down her throat. As with Newsom, they finished up by shooting her multiple times and setting her body on fire, but instead of dumping her corpse elsewhere, they wrapped it in a blanket and stuffed it into a trash can which was left inside the residence.
(This preceding paragraph is the version of the crime initially presented on the Internet and in press accounts. Subsequent reports have contradicted many of these details, chiefly that neither Newsom nor Christian was mutilated as described, and that the perpetrators murdered Christian within a day of the kidnapping [rather than holding her captive for several days], poured cleaning solution into her mouth post-mortem to eliminate DNA evidence [rather than as a form of torture], and killed her by binding her inside several plastic garbage bags and leaving her to suffocate [but did not shoot her or set her body on fire as they did with Newsom]).
Five suspects have since been arrested and charged with the murders of Christopher Newsom and Channon Christian (and related crimes). Davidson, along with his brother, Letalvis "Rome" Cobbins (24), and George Geovonni "Detroit" Thomas (27), have all been indicted on a total of 46 counts each: 16 counts of felony murder, 2 counts of premeditated murder, 2 counts of especially aggravated robbery, 4 counts of especially aggravated kidnapping, 20 counts of aggravated rape, and 2 counts of theft. Vanessa Coleman (18), has been indicted on a total of 40 counts: 12 counts of felony murder, 1 count of premeditated murder, 1 count of especially aggravated robbery, 4 counts of especially aggravated kidnapping, 20 counts of aggravated rape, and 2 counts of theft. Eric DeWayne "E" Boyd (34) was not indicted and faces federal charges only as an accessory after the fact. Boyd is currently on trial in federal court, while the other four suspects are expected to be tried in state court later in 2008.
Some commentators (as cited in the example reproduced above) have made much of the fact that the bulk of the news reportage about the Newsom/Christian murders has been local (predominantly in Tennessee, where the crimes took place, and in neighboring Kentucky), while the case has received little or no national coverage by major news outlets — a phenomenon attributed to supposedly biased news media loath to report black-on-white crime. (Both Christian and Newsom were white; all five of the suspects arrested in connection with their killings are black.)
However, the notion that every major news outlet in the U.S. (all of them competitive, profit-making businesses) has conspired to ignore what would otherwise be a compelling national story is rather implausible. A more rational explanation might be found in the sober observation that murders — even decidedly horrific murders — are unfortunately too frequent an occurrence in the U.S. for all of them to garner national attention. The cases that do tend to attract prolonged, nationwide coverage are ones exhibiting a combination of factors (e.g., scandal, mystery, sexual elements, celebrity involvement, shockingly large numbers of deaths, victims who especially elicit sympathy) that make them particularly fascinating and compelling to the public at large, such as the still-unsolved murder of 6-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey, the mysterious disappearance (and death) of pregnant Laci Peterson, the massacre of 32 students and faculty at Virginia Tech, and the celebrity trial to determine whether actress Lana Clarkson committed suicide or was killed by reclusive record producer Phil Spector.
And, of course, the fact that the victims were white and the (presumed) killer black didn't stop the O.J. Simpson murder trial from becoming the most media-covered event in the history of jurisprudence.

This happened here in Knoxville TN months ago, I'm not sure that you posted the fact that they gang raped him too. Not joking .... They also used foreign objects to rape the both of them as well, it's not on snopes but the news around here told the whole story it was much more gruesome then outside agencies reported.

Those black cancers that are very violent perpetrators easily fall back on the excuses they always make for themselves as well as getting upset and being somehow surprised when people get serious and look at things in a sensitively racial way.

That is why I maintain that the conclusion of the Sean Bell situation back on April 26th with the not guilty verdict was very appropriate because two of those cops were black and the facts in the case made it seem like a justifiable homicide took place outside that sleazy nightclub establishment that had a notorious reputation for criminal conduct.

One time I was in a pizza joint parking lot, and this ghetto ass car with two thugs pulled in hard and fast, looked both ways, and driver opened door with both of them staring and me/woman as a target. It just felt wrong... their eyes and bodies fixed on me and her in new car looking like targets.
I'm a somewhat militant dude, I had the glock ready as always. I shifted shoulder to show them I had *something*, I put on the stiffest lip I could, and I said pretty loudly "No, motherfvcker... no motherfvcker..." and began to stand up too staring passenger dead in eyes. I couldn't see the passenger's hands, as they were below open door.
It was about to be a shootout, probably. I don't know who they were, but they pull in fast, not even into a spot, just fast and it just felt like it was Go time.
The passenger hesitated for a second, I stopped halfway standing with both hands on glock, still pointed down, but obvious what I was now holding to them. Head shaking "no" at them, lips pursed, waiting for their move.
They briefly said something, passenger got back in, they peeled out.
I don't know what they wanted. They pulled in fast, and pulled out fast. I couldn't call the police, what would I say? Two guys in their 20s acted weird then left? I knew what they wanted, they wanted to fvcking jack me. Not a doubt in my mind. I got my pizza and went home.

my boy has a pistol license too but doesnt carry it all the time like I do---his excuse is, "well if Im in such and such town I dont need it."
I say bullshit to that----you never know when shit is going to go down and most of the time the thugs come to suburbs to rob and steal so people dont recognize them and thats where the $$$$ is.

Good call. I'm sure there are many stories like mine that don't usually come up in converstation - where the simple presence of a gun, and mental awareness and focus to flex down a potential threat. The bad guys just figured they should go mess with someone else.
Everyone slips sometime, but if you keep a general awareness and just watch the body language, hands, and eyes of people who don't look like they belong, you can detect the majority of threats. Most bad guys do NOT want a gun battle in a parking lot with a trained, armed man with a family to defend. They know this man will soak up 10 rounds to ensure his family gets home alive, and will most likely return 10 rounds of his own. They much prefer a weak person who will comply quietly.

A man who police say assaulted and carjacked an 86-year-old World War II veteran is behind bars Friday morning. Detroit Police say the 21-year-old suspect was arrested around 1 a.m. Friday.
Aaron Brantley was on his way home from Bible study when he was assaulted in broad daylight and his car was stolen from a BP gas station on McNichols near Fairfield Street last week. Brantley told The Associated Press said several people passed by him as he crawled, unable to walk because his leg was broken in the attack. He eventually tried to pay a stranger to drive him home, but the man drove him for free, and called an ambulance.
Before making the arrest, police released a video surveillance tape from just before the carjacking

They never asked Judge Richard Baumgartner any questions during their deliberations.[26] On August 26, Cobbins was sentenced to life without parole.[27]

He was found not guilty on three counts of the aggravated rape of Christopher Newsom but was found guilty of the lesser included charges of facilitation of rape. The sentencing hearing began on October 29, 2009 at 9am EST. On December 8, 2009, George Thomas was found guilty on all counts, including the ones the other defendants were acquitted of despite his case being based solely on circumstantial evidence and testimony.[29] The sentencing hearing began December 8, 2009 and ended on December 10, 2009 at approx 10:45 am EST when the jury, after approx 3 hours of deliberation, returned a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole on each of the 4 capital convictions.[30]

On December 8, 2009, George Thomas was found guilty on all counts, including the ones the other defendants were acquitted of despite his case being based solely on circumstantial evidence and testimony.[29] The sentencing hearing began December 8, 2009 and ended on December 10, 2009 at approx 10:45 am EST when the jury, after approx 3 hours of deliberation, returned a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole on each of the 4 capital convictions.[30]
The convictions of Boyd, Cobbins, Davidson and Thomas left Vanessa Coleman as the last defendant to face trial.[31] Coleman's case is complicated by the fact that, while she was granted immunity by federal authorities for testimony in the federal case on the car-jacking, the state courts have ruled that the federal grant of immunity does not extend to the state charges on murder and rape.[32] On May 13, 2010, Coleman was acquitted of first degree murder but found guilty on lesser charges.[33] On July 30, 2010, she was sentenced to 53 years behind bars.[3]
