Foks I can only re commed hiking as a cardio, it's awesome to burn some calories, you are seeing something it's a lot of fun and you get out of the city or what ever shithole you're living in.
I'm into Bushcrafting tracking and all that good stuff since I did my specialisation 3 month after basic in the army, thats when the only good Officer I meet in the army actually made the training look interesting by going through all the different aspects of living comfortable in a non urban environment.
Who else here is into hill walking or hiking?

Beautiful 1.5 hour (very easy) hike today in Nashua NH...
People had their dogs with them, folks jogging, biking, hiking, etc...

Hiking is just uppity walking
I walk the dog in the neighborhood and I enjoy walking the beach or a city. I agree it is best for conditioning.
-
The quiet secret about hiking is that's it's just walking. Walking is so underrated. Walk fast four or five times a week for an hour and the fat will melt off.
When I injured my Achilles I couldn't run for about a year. Walking on the trail in the woods did amazing things. It got to the point where I went for five fast miles every time I went out. I tried to transition to running but all the walking I did took the spring out of my step. It was a slow transition but after a couple of months I left the walking behind. Now I got sick and I will return to fast walking again.

Wrong.
Changes in elevation, terrain, and walk angles make it totally different than just walking.

If I walk up a hill I am still walking. If I walk an uneven sand surface I am still walking.
-
Getting in to the hills and mountains does wonders for mental, emotional and physical health.
-
If I walk up a hill I am still walking. If I walk an uneven sand surface I am still walking.
If you walk on unstable surfaces, inclines and at different elevations, it's going to have a different effect on your conditioning and what muscles are engaged to keep you walking.
I'm not critiquing walking on roads or beaches, it's excellent. But hiking is different.

BHANKS, you are correct.

He knows it's different. He will have encountered Naismith's Rule at some point (perhaps when 'hiking up the mountains of Kosovo with a mortar on his back'). Getting him to admit it, however, is an impossible task.

Bhanky does his hiking on the track at his local high school.

Really strange statement from a supposed front line infantryman whose knees are fcuked?

Anyone who tells bhanks he's wrong is just a hater.

Hiking is great but something about driving somewhere just to walk around really bothers me

Yes... Luckily im in NH and surrounded by these hiking trails, white mountains, etc...

I've stopped participating in organized rides because of the logistics. It's much simpler to throw my leg over the top tube in my driveway and ride wherever and back.

It looks like that up here in Northern N.Y. state........totally beautiful.

I go hiking every weekend.
Have miles of trails just behind my house.
I did 4 miles this morning, with over 6000 feet of elevation change.
Most people can't do this hike without stopping a few times.
I don't consider hiking and walking the same thing, but i guess if you don't live in the mountains, it could be seen the same.

Search called off for missing hiker.
A massive search ended today when rescue workers were unable to find the body of Lois Einhorn.
A hiker missing since Friday?
Lois Einhorn?
Holy shitballs.

This place was highly populated, but still...

Graduated to a "difficult trail yesterday, 2+ hours of hills, obstacles, etc. Holy shit balls, hard work.
(I also did a 1-hr walk in the AM w/ the dog).
Whole body hurts today (and I slept 12 hours).
For those who say "go for a walk around the neighborhood, same thing" you know Jack Shit about hiking.
And 78 degrees here in NH yesterday, what a day...

Yup, this is the way.
Hiking is the best.
Trying carrying weight - whole new ballgame.

Hankins incoming how he taught Sherpas how to climb Everest
Yes, he used to carry them to the top so they could concentrate on the negative part of the exercise first by making their way down on their own
