the world's fastest man.
The Jamaican runner, who doesn't even consider the 100
meters his best race, set the world record Saturday
night with a time of 9.72 seconds, .02 seconds faster
than the old record held by his countryman, Asafa
Powell.

seconds at the Reebok Grand Prix, .02 seconds faster
than the old record held by his countryman, Asafa
Powell.
Bolt was using the 100 for "speed work" and to avoid
having to run the more grueling 400, when, suddenly, he
ran the world's second-fastest time last month at 9.76.
Even then, he said he wasn't sure if he would give up
the 400 meters for the 100 for the Beijing Olympics.
Hard to imagine he has any choice now.
Unfurling his lanky frame — listed at 6-foot-4, but
probably more like 6-5 and, either way, considered too
tall for this kind of speed work — he created a big-time
gap between himself and Tyson Gay at about the halfway
point, then routed him to the finish line.
Gay, the best sprinter in America, finished in 9.85.
Within moments of crossing the finish line, the
21-year-old from Kingston was hoisting the Jamaican flag
and a crowd with hundreds of Jamaican fans was going
wild.
"Just coming here, knowing a lot of Jamaicans were here
giving me their support, it meant a lot," Bolt said. "I
just wanted to give them what they wanted."
But who could have expected this?
Bolt has long been considered one of his country's top,
up-and-coming sprinters, but his height and running
style seemed to make him much more fit for the 200 and
400.
Like so many who compete in the 100, Bolt had lots of
work to do with his push out of the blocks. He doesn't
consider himself a true pro at that. And after a bad
false start by the field — the second gun didn't go off
until the runners were 20 meters down the track — this
simply didn't seem like a night for world records.
But it was.
"He ran a perfect race," Gay said. "I've got to take my

Tracks have been "sped" up, at the expense of long distance runners. They have been trying to erase Ben Johnson record. Faster tracks equal faster times...
Don't know whether him being tall has an affect, due to his longer stride. It will be interesting to see if taller sprinters have a decidedly better advantage than a shorter one. If so, then times will be falling fast and records will be broken, which will probably make track and field a hot sport for b-ballers getting into shape :D

Usain was a champion youth then junior and has smashed records throughout his entire life..running tims better than seniors and previous olympic and world champions before he hit 19.
how hes been running since becoming a senior has been well below what he has promised...in fact his times have been slower than as a junior...or at best only minimal improvement.
they were suggesting that he could take the 200m under 19seconds and 400m under 43 seconds..hes that good.
but no one suggested doing the 100m. he "toyed with it"..and ran 10 flat...
it seems clear that hell give the 400m a miss for now and do the 100 and 200. if he doesnt go sub 9.7 and break MJ's 200m record then he's under achieved.
hell then probably have a go at sub 43s 400m as he gets older.
i dont think the world's seen a better sprinter...ever...he's on a par with jesse owen's freak genetics for the time.

I doubt that sped up tracks do have any impact. It would equal whether you shat before start or couldn't thusly ran excessive weight. It's more likely new generation just getting programmed to run faster, evolution as u speak.
The elusive 9.69 time will be broken this year either by Powell and less likely by Usain. Gay can go and play.

Johnson admits it and says Lewis was using, and the USOC official says that Lewis, along with a few hundred fellow US Olympic athletes in 1984, failed a drug test (ephedrine) and should have been disqualified from the team. He then produces a copy of the letter for the film, which Lewis shrugs off as "bah humbug, that was just cold medicine".

Anyone who thinks that only some of the Olympic athletes are using and not all of them is a complete idiot, the chance of a natural man to be able to actually be competitive against a juiced up man in a physical competition is just about non existent.
With 99% of Olympics sports relying more on physical traits than skill the situation is quite obvious.

I saw Bolt earlier this summer and am a major track fan. I was a decent sprinter in my day , years ago, won my state meet in 1976 ( NH high school ) in the indoor 60 yds and outdoor 100 yds in 9.9 sec. My lifetime best in college was 10.62 100m . I was a track coach for many years and feel that Bolt is a freak of nature for several reasons. He may as tall as one can be for the 100m. His 9.72 is with a taiil wind of 1.7 m/s , just under the legal limit but is just under 4 miler per hr, so he is running FAST! He does not look drugged and most of his speed is from his leg turnover combined with his great stide length. I have NEVER seen a tall sprinter be able to accelerate like Bolt can. I would be concerned with the amount of torque he generates at top speed with his long legs he may be at risk for injury running the curve in the 200 m, but who knows? The centripetal force his legs to use to keep him in the turn as long as they are ,may cause issues with his ankle and inner knee (medial meniscus).
I consider world class sprinters as incredible , pure athletes and find the 100 m as the most thrilling race in track.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone that tall who could reach his top end speed so quickly. That turnover speed of Bolt's puts MJ's 200m record in serious jeopardy and we can expect it to fall at this Olympics.

lol.....welcome to the new millenium, Ron. the same argument can be said for a lot of other Olympic sports. Swimming is the perfect example. the speedo swimming suit, the pool and all that other technology. Imagine in the next 20years how many improvement will be made in sport technology.

As much a freak as Michael Johnson was, I've never in my life seen anything like Bolt, either.
True, but he may not break MJ's record if he's only concerned with winning the gold medal. I thought his response as to pulling up in the 100m was telling, and if he has a big lead in the 200, he may coast in.
Records don't seem to impress him as was evident in his post race interveiw, and he appears a bit cocky.
Not sure if he will be a hit with Madison Avenue. He certainly seems all about himself and not trying to be an ambassador for the sport.
I know Phelps is getting huge props and airtime, as he should, but after watching NBC since his race, his name is barely mentioned. Part of it may be he's not American, but he's not proving to be the media darling some folks like.
Still, facts are facts. His performance may have been the most dominate in sporting history, and he could get even better if he applies himself. Very scary.

Pretty sure his earnings will go up if he breaks the world record again or is anticipated to. No need to do it all at once.
Considering the injury chances, we will never know.
He could pull a hammie next week and be done, forever.

True, but he may not break MJ's record if he's only concerned with winning the gold medal. I thought his response as to pulling up in the 100m was telling, and if he has a big lead in the 200, he may coast in.
Records don't seem to impress him as was evident in his post race interveiw, and he appears a bit cocky.
Not sure if he will be a hit with Madison Avenue. He certainly seems all about himself and not trying to be an ambassador for the sport.
I know Phelps is getting huge props and airtime, as he should, but after watching NBC since his race, his name is barely mentioned. Part of it may be he's not American, but he's not proving to be the media darling some folks like.
Still, facts are facts. His performance may have been the most dominate in sporting history, and he could get even better if he applies himself. Very scary.
I understand wanting the gold medal more than wanting an even more impressive record time.
I know that not all people handle success the same way, but all of the Jamaican athletes I've known have always been very humble and appreciative of their success (even if they did have general disdain for the laziness they believed to be prevalent in Black America).
What I don't get - even in a 21-year-old - is him not having a desire to run his absolute BEST race in the Olympic final.
In many ways, it's unfortunate that this incredible talent is being wasted on someone who doesn't appear to appreciate it, but that's so very common with many of the world's best athletes, I'm afraid.
He is still young, but if only he will listen to some of the old heads out there on how to comport himself, he could turn that Olympic gold into serious millions for himself, his family, and his country.
If he'd smiled, and simply thanked his mom, coach, and God, he would be a multi-millionaire today.
