6 dead in Tokyo stabbing spree
June 8, 2008
TOKYO - A man who police said "was tired of life" drove into a crowd of pedestrians Sunday and then went on a stabbing rampage in Tokyo's premier electronics and video game district, killing six people and wounding 12, authorities said.
The deadly lunchtime assault happened in Akihabara district after the attacker drove a rented two-ton truck into a crowd, running over three people, public broadcaster NHK quoted an unidentified witness as saying.
News reports said the man jumped out of the truck and began stabbing the people he'd knocked down, then turned on horrified onlookers. The attacker grunted and roared as he slashed and stabbed at his victims on a street crowded with Sunday shoppers, reports said.
"He was screaming as he was stabbing people at random," another unidentified witness told NHK.
Police confirmed six deaths — five men and one woman — but they could not say whether the victims died from injuries from the truck or were stabbed to death.
NHK reported a seventh victim had died, but police could not immediately confirm that.
Police said they arrested Tomohiro Kato, 25, at the scene.
"The suspect told police that he came to Akihabara to kill people," said Jiro Akaogi, a spokesman for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. "He said he was tired of life. He said he was sick of everything."
Local news reports initially said the man was a self-proclaimed gangster, but NHK later said the suspect was not a gang member.
At least 17 ambulances rushed to the scene, with TV footage showing rescue workers tending to victims in the street.
Akihabara district, known as Electric Town, is wildly popular with Japan's cyber-wise youth.
Once rare, stabbing attacks have become more frequent in Japan in recent years as violent crime has increased. In one of the worst attacks, a man with a history of mental illness burst into an elementary school in Japan in 2001 and killed eight children. The killer was executed in 2004.

The knife is just a tool. The man is the weapon.
-
We got knife laws here. I think it can work.
It means the police can take the thugs off the street, and that in general you won't have to suspect that a whole lot of people are walking around armed with all kinds of tools.
-
If the Japanese had guns someone would have shot his ass while yelling "West side guy!!!".
-
In South Africa in the old days you could not have a knife with a blade more than 75mm long on you in the street.
You could not have a switch blade or a stiletto.
You could not wear cammo in the street.
Now you can walk around with a broad sword and nobody will stop you.
Truth be told you can stab some one to death with a pencil, broken bottle, bicycle poke, a butter knife, anything it is a hard thing to controll something like this.

The same guy could have killed 5 people with a hammer. It's not that hard. Hell, if you killed people standing alone, you could probably get more than 5 before being captured.
Now, if he had gotten out of his car with a knife and been faced with 30 angry japanese men with their OWN knives, I got a feeling there would have only been one add'l death... the bad guy.

The crime rate has gone ape shit in SA because no one is scared of the law any more.
In the new SA you are the law..... "demand it" "it is your right" was brain washed into every one.
Now they cant switch it of.

Asians are catching up to us in the going postal sweepstakes.
Although the Malvo sniper dude was black, so I guess we don't have the monopoly we once did.

Is black people catching up to whites in the crazy department really a good thing?

We have every weapon law out, and it pretty much works as controllling access is so easy. Guns, knives, even those spray thingies and some martial arts type things [swords etc] all sorts are banned. We have extremely low murder rates, but there is still an offing occassionally. A nutbag will always find a way to kill someone.
That said, glad this nutbag in question did not have a gun as I think he maybe have been able to off many more people. Group stabbing is not the most efficient way to commit mass murder really is it.

Some of those samurai warriors can do amazing things with a katana. I take it you did not see Kill Bill?

Honest question, are you suggesting people are armed to the teeth, always on the defensive? If the answer is yes, how long have you be a stupid piece of low life shit?
-
you can't stop people from killing people, it just won't happen. I don't even think you can stop a person from mass killing with a single weapon. If the shooter doesn't have a gun for his task, maybe he decides instead to build a bomb and maybe more end up getting killed. All I'm saying is that if someone is set on going out and doing some killing, simply banning the popular weapon isn't going to stop them.
-
So where are the calls for the banning of trucks? ???
The bottom line is pyschos are pychos. If they want to go on a killing spree,
...they will and will fashion a weapon from anything available to do so.
A six pack of coke in a pillow case can knock someone's brains out if wielded properly.
Are you going to propose a ban on Coca-Cola softdrinks?
-
Yes I think we should ban scissors too,
Knives, scissors and guns kill people....don't be fooled into thinking the person using these weapons of mass destruction have any responsibility.
-
The knife is just a tool. The man is the weapon.
How many people die from unsafe cars a year? But some nut kills 6 people and we are thinking about banning knifes? Fvcking stupid.

We should definitely do what 240 suggests tho and make it illegal for anyone NOT to carry a knife at least 6 inches in length.

Congratulations to those of you who see the irony and humor in the title of this thread. You ban guns and people will always find other ways to commit violent crimes against other people.
If you want to stop or at least minimize violent crimes, you have to get to the root of the problem. Banning weapons or potential weapons won't do. It's about personal responsibility.

I saw how you tried to make "teh funney".
But slight problem with your attempt at "irony": knife laws aren't all that bad.
