Pakistan's Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani has condemned an air strike by Afghanistan-based US forces that Islamabad says killed 11 of its troops.
The incident took place inside Pakistan, near the border with Afghanistan.
The US military confirmed it had used artillery and air strikes after coming under fire from "anti-Afghan" forces.
The incident comes as relations between the US and Pakistan militaries have been hit by mounting tensions.
The soldiers' deaths occurred overnight at a border post in the mountainous Gora Prai region in Mohmand, one of Pakistan's tribal areas, across the border from Afghanistan's Kunar province.
Eight Taleban militants were also killed in the clashes, a Taleban spokesman said.
'Cowardly act'
If the 11 deaths are confirmed, it would be the worst incident of its kind since US and Nato-led forces began fighting militants in Afghanistan in 2001.
Prime Minister Gilani condemned the deaths, telling parliament: "We will take a stand for the sake of this country's sovereignty, for the sake of its dignity and self-respect".
"We do not allow our territory to be used. We completely condemn this, and will take it up through the foreign office."
Pakistan's military called it a "completely unprovoked and cowardly act".
The US military said in a statement that coalition troops had come under fire from "anti-Afghan forces" in a wooded area near the Pakistan border.
The statement said artillery and air strikes had been co-ordinated with Pakistan, but that the incident was being investigated.
A spokesman for a pro-Taleban militant group in Pakistan said it had launched an attack on US and Afghan army troops trying to set up a border control post.
"We launched an attack on them from several sides and caused serious harm - and then the US and Nato forces began a series of air strikes," said the spokesman, Maulvi Umar

US questions Pakistan force's allegiance, funding
Signs that Pakistan's Frontier Corps is helping Taliban and al Qaeda-linked groups cross into Afghanistan only exacerbates U.S. frustration over Pakistan's plans to secure peace deals with fighters in that region, where Osama bin Laden is thought to hide.
"We cannot rely on Pakistan to stop the traffic of terrorists crossing that border despite the strong statements of its leaders," said Sen. Carl Levin, the Michigan Democrat who chairs the U.S. Senate's committee on armed forces.
Levin and some U.S. defense officials said Taliban fighters may also be getting assistance from Pakistan's army.

They had him in 98, 2001, and 2005. Each time was allowed to escape due to whatever reason.
The White House readily admits they had him in 2005, but didn't want to undermine Musharraf (who had let OBL chill for 4 years before that).
Keep in mind he was a CIA asset for 20 years, blowing shit up around the world to further US agenda. Then he did 911, which conveniently jumpstarted the mid-east expansion that PNAC (Cheney, Rummy, Wolfowitz, brenner) had written about in 2000. Which, conveinently, furthered US agenda.
He's a perfect trophy once they decide they want to get him - I'd wager oct 2008. ;)

Bin Laden is off the reservation.

Not disbelieving you, more curious and wish to know more, do you have a link re: bolded part?

I remember it was on MSNBC hardball, July 14, 07. Bush called off catching him in 2005, WH admits. I was on vacation at the time and was in my hotel room watching, nowhere near getbig. I'll look for it. It was the beginning of the "we can't piss off pakistan" admission.

A SEAL or SF/DElta team had intel as to his location...they wanted to go in. Actually it might well hae been the TF 19n guys...in any event the mission details got kicked upstairs to DC and be the time it got ok'd it would have been a mini invasion of Pakistan...like an entire Ranger Batt plus the SOF guys, so they called it off. It's not like Hollywood.

A "mini-invasion" of Pakistan for bin laden?
Um, we did a full invasion of Afghanistan.
Wait, is it because Afghanistan had the oil pipeline to the Caspian and Pakistan doesnt?

Kinda hard to sneak up on a guy with tons of choppers and an entire Ranger Batt stomping around....plus no arty....invading a "friendly" country. TF 19 wanted to go in with two choppers and 20 guys.
