for the 30-something couple who is financially quite well off. 1st child, due in August, known to be a girl ;D
Many people want to know since we're going to have a "couples" shower ~ actually an outdoor BBQ/party.

If they're well off and don't need for anything, ...then make the gift all about you.
Depending on how close you are to them. A breast pump? If you intend to feed the baby.
I got one for my sister, ...and told her she had better use it, ...'cause I intended to feed my little neice,
...if I had to hold her titties to do it. ;D
A baby album might work, ...or baby clothes that she can dress her in when you come to visit.
Baby einstein tapes, things for when the baby gets older that she can grow into...

If they are very well off, I might not go with any of the 'normal' things but something more chic like designer baby wear, baby jewelery, luxury organic baby toiletries, monitor Stella posted, or personalised items like embroidered baby bedding and burp cloths - issue being the name, maybe "Joe and Sarah's Angel" or some crap could be used etc. Basically I might think the adage of buying things to 'help' would not really apply if they are set like that, and swing more frivolous.

Get them a gift that they can use. A baby stroller, high chair or baby monitors.

Yes. I was hoping to go the functional/usefulness route. Even though they can afford anything and everything they could possibly need, they are probably as clueless as I as to what would be useful. "You don't know what you don't know". :D

My favorite thing to do is to by a fun child's bank (like Tigger or Scooby) and put $100 in it an write "baby's name" college fund on a note and attach it to the bank.

Those diaper disposals are real nice gifts , keeps the odors contained ;)Those dirty little bundles can get you by surprise when you don't know how many you'll be going through and how bad they can smell.
Also in reference to Sin's idea ... I buy Money Savvy Banks for children , they have four compartments , one each for saving - spending -donating - and investing .You teach them which percentages to apply to each catagory too , so they can understand the concept of money and it's purpose . I know it's only a newborn coming but it could be pretty full by the time it's ready to " break into" :)

baby monitors, what ever happened to the days when the baby monitor was just the baby? My friend has a baby monitor and it's annoying as hell.

I'm guessing larger more sound proof homes.
