"In his eternal quest for the Republican presidential nomination, the supposed maverick John McCain has repeatedly reversed long-held positions and compromised purportedly core principles. From the Bush tax cuts, the religious right and immigration reform to overturning Roe v. Wade, proclaiming Samuel Alito a model Supreme Court Justice and bashing France (just to name a few), McCain changed sides as changing political conditions dictated.
But over the past two weeks, McCain’s rapid fire, acrobatic flip-flops have produced whiplash, at least for voters. 10 times since the beginning of June, McCain has retreated from, upended or just forgotten positions he once claimed as his own. while staunchly liberal, i believe my own candidates should be held to the same standards as the other and will make mention of flip-flops as they come. Obama discussing israel was pretty bad.
that said, no one, left OR right, has a flip-flop litany like McCain's in recent times. he has surpassed everyone.

And who can forget his see-saw posturing on Iran not being a threat one day and the next day in Montana saying that they are a "grave threat"...ah politicians. ;)
I agree that McCain is pretty much tossing everything at the wall to see if it sticks but Obama is no "straight talk express" either he just has a most of the TV media to campaign for him. Face it, it's election time again and this is par for the course.

obama's had some moments of posturing, some moments of tilting one way or the other, but even as cynical as i am about politicians i'm almost morbidly fascinated by the frequency in which mccain's reversals are coming. this isn't just things like his pro choice or pro life hop, we're starting to get to a point where he'll change what he's saying day by day.
like you said, all politicians will, well, play politics. depending on audience they might say one thing at one time and spin it another way at another time. obama's got a few as does everyone else, but McCain is reaching a whole new level of both position flips and verbal gaffes. he's turning into that rambling grandpa.

I grow fearful at the thought of Obama as our next president because with as much research I have done on him I end up with more questions than answers. McCain on the other hand has had a long career in politics as well as the military. I favor that over anything that Obama has to offer.

Not trying to derail the thread, but McCain wants to lift the bann on drilling for our on oil. As of this morning so does Bush. I think this is a good move. Also, it looks like Cuba is working with China to drill 50 miles off the coast of Florida.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush will ask Congress Wednesday to lift the ban on new offshore drilling, White House press secretary Dana Perino said Tuesday
The request will come a day after presumed Republican presidential candidate John McCain issued the same call.
"For years, the president has pushed Congress to expand our domestic oil supply, but Democrats in Congress have consistently blocked such action," Perino told CNN.
Opponents of offshore drilling say it would harm aquatic ecosystems by eroding wetlands, contaminating the water with chemicals, polluting the air, killing fish and dumping waste.
Bush has long called for opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska to oil exploration, but Perino said he now wants to go further.
"With gasoline now over $4 a gallon, tomorrow he will explicitly call on Congress to also pass legislation lifting the congressional ban on safe, environmentally friendly offshore oil drilling," Perino said.
She added, "As with several existing Republican congressional proposals, he wants to work with states to determine where offshore drilling should occur, and also for the federal government to share revenues with the states. The president believes Congress shouldn't waste any more time."
At a campaign event in Houston, Texas, McCain made similar comments.
"We have proven oil reserves of at least 21 billion barrels in the United States," he said. "But a broad federal moratorium stands in the way of energy exploration and production. He said lifting the ban could be done "in ways that are consistent with sensible standards of environmental protection."
McCain's plan would let individual states decide whether to explore drilling possibilities.

New drilling already could be in the works 50 miles off the Florida coast -- by Cubans, not Americans, with help from China and other allies. A rich undersea oil field stretches into Cuban waters near the Florida Keys.
"The people I represent can't understand how we can possibly let China end up with rights to our oil and gas in the Gulf of Mexico because we say we're not going to do it and they say, 'OK, we'll do it and we'll work with Cuba, if we have to, to do it,'" said U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp, R-Tennessee. "That's really asinine."

Are you kidding me? The coverage on the morning shows on network TV are run like a DNC add, and lets not even forget about MSNBC's outright advocacy. CNN is the only station that plays it even close to down the middle. If you're going to sit here and tell me that the media, taken as a whole, is solidly in McCain's corner than you are crazy. And please, don't tell me that they are stabbing Obama every chance "they" get with a "dumb ole' rumor"...that's what the media does, they report that stuff, but the overall posture that comes from the news media is decidedly in Obama's corner. CHILDREN are being secretly reared in Britain for sacrifice by Satanists, says a Government-backed expert.
Psychotherapist Valerie Sinason, who has been paid by the Department of Health to study adult survivors of alleged organised ritual abuse, said yesterday she was "completely convinced" Satanic abuse does occur.
She claimed to have evidence about children whose births were not officially registered being reared for abuse and sacrifice.
The scientist, who edited a clinical textbook on Satanist abuse after the controversies in Rochdale, the Orkneys and Nottingham in the early 1990s, has claimed previously to have evidence of at least 100 murders.
Her study of cases from nearly 40 psychiatrists, psychologists and mental health experts will claim that she has seen evidence of physical injuries in adult survivors, who tell of seeing people drugged and killed. She said that out of 76 patients she has seen at her London clinic, 46 claimed that they had witnessed the murder of children or adults.
The Department of Health yesterday stressed that it stood by the findings of a 1994 report which concluded there was organised abuse but that it was "not helpful or appropriate to call it Satanic". Scotland Yard is carrying out its own research project into ritual abuse.
