I remember grabing a flex magazine and looking the through pics (as i didn't care about articles and stuff like that because i didn't knew shit) when i came across Lee priests pic curling a bar, i was so amazed how he managed to have so much muscle in such a small frame....freaky, i instantly became a Priest fan ...
Another guy was Nasser (yes, Nasser :)) a pic of him doing pullovers in the nautilus machine with his classic glasses and all these fancy clothes...looked cool. 8)
how about you? which guys do you "blame" for getting into bodybuilding?
-
Arnold

Doring.
Klaus Doring.

I don't know if i can pin point it to just one bb'er. The first mag i read was a '92 Flex mag i think (might be a different year, can't remember, the mag was like 10 years old when i read it) and it had guys like Lee Labrada, Porter Cotrell, Chris Cormier, Sonny Schmidt. I just remember seeing those physiques and instantly wanting to look like that.

There were many things for me which all kind of intermingle which inspired me. Before I ever bought a bodybuilding magazine or knew anything about the "sport" I had seen Van Damme films and wanted to look that muscular. Then I bought the magazines in the early 90's and guys like Dorian, Shawn Ray, and Kevin Levrone inspired me. Obviously Arnold did too and I also remember seeing an article in a British tabloid newspaper about the emerging WBF in 1990 and there was an interview with Gary Strydom and I wondered how on earth I was ever going to look like that. For some reason the idea of training with weights solidly for 15 years appealed to me and I've been hooked ever since.

Same here, Arnold made me lift and Ronnie made me start being interested in Pro BB
-
None if them. I also had no interest in pro bodybuilding when I started lifting weights. I was inspired most by Reeves, simply because I wanted to have a physique like that. Same is true with Zane. I then got into the Pumping Iron film and liked Arnold's charisma etc..
None of the insulin/Gh type physiques were something I was interested in building for myself so my interest was and is confined to the novelty and circus freak aspect of it. For example, I will look at Trey Brewer threads, laugh and ponder what and why he did what he did to himself. The macabre theatre of it all keeps me pretty fascinated tbh.
-
My interest in lifting weight started, from watching pro wrestling, specifically superstars like Lex Luger, "Ravishing" Rick Rude, the Road Warriors/Legion of Doom, and my favorite as a kid, Hulk Hogan.
As far as pro bodybuilders go, two bodybuilders come to mind, because they refuted two of the biggest myths, as it relates to bodybuilding.
Mike Mentzer shot down myth #1: that you have to lift all day, everyday, and kill yourself every session. He had a beginner program that instructed to lift three times per week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday), doing 3 sets of 10 for each bodypart.
The magazine from which I got this information was Muscle & Fitness, the July 1988 issue (I think).
The other pro bodybuilder was the very first Mr. Olympia, Larry Scott. He and Betty Weider were on the cover of that M&F magazine. It displayed a current picture of the two of them and an inset of a cover that they did 20 years earlier.
When I found the article on Scott, my jaw hit the floor, when I discovered that he was nearly 50 years old. I couldn't believe it. Except for a few wrinkles and a slightly-receeded hairline, Scott looked just as big at 50 as he did at 50 (to my untrained teenage eye, at least).
That chopped down myth #2: The tired, "when you get old, all that muscle turns to fat" spiel.
From that point forward, I was hooked. I really wanted to pump iron. Since my family didn't have cable, at the time, I couldn't watch shows like American Muscle. So, Florida Championship Wrestling, NWA World Championship Wrestling, WWF Superstars, and WWF Wrestling Challenge provided the on-screen bodybuilders.
That's also why you need fat wrestlers. It makes the muscular wrestlers look good. What wrestling fan will ever forget "The Slam Heard 'Round the World" (Hulk Hogan bodyslamming Andre the Giant at WrestleMania 3, in front of 93,000 people)?

Absolutely!

When I first started I thought the physiques of Mentzer(s), Jussup Wilkosz, and the "Commando" era Arnold were the ideal. Then as I grew older, I found that I appreciated the physiques of various strongmen, powerlifters, and olympic lifters like Patera, Kazmaier, Bednarski, Pisarenko, Bill March, Rigert, and Kono.
Theirs was a functional strength, a purposeful bulk. Not just size for the sake of it.
-
None.just wanted to be bigger.

arnold from terminator got me into liftng weights in the 80's

dorian from the 93 olympia

William Smith, Draper, Scott, Rick Wayne. Lots of guys were introduced to BB thru Weider adverts in comics, which was smart marketing. Perfect fit with superheroes; those BBs looked like the real thing.
-
Arnold of course was the first BB in print that caught my attention.
Lou with the Incredible Hulk series & the fact the Incredible Hulk was my favorite comic as a kid.
Then when I saw Kaz on WSM.

I first started lifting cause my baseball coach said I didn't make the varsity baseball team because I needed to get bigger. I weighed 130 as a freshman trained all summer and by the next baseball season was 175.
