ive never understood what exactly the stock market is, whats its for, how it works, or what all those people running around on the floor are actually doing. but apparently lots of people make lots of money just by 'buying stock' and i want to know how to do this.
-
good question, i never understanded it either.
-
A stock market is where you trade shares in a publicly held company(corporation)
Price of the share goes up or down depending on earnings and economic conditions. People make money by holding the stocks as ownership assets in another company and selling them at higher prices than what they bought them for, and also through dividends(income from the stock).
It's not complicated at all.. lol Investing in stocks however isn't as easy as people think
-
so basically you would just pick a company whose value you think is going to increase, buy some of their 'stock' and hope that it increases in value so you can sell it and make a profit? that sounds easy enough

Price of the share goes up or down depending on earnings and economic conditions how many drinks Ben Bernanke has the night before the FOMC meeting .
Fixed! :D

And you can't make money just buying stock.. You are buying a share of another company and if the stock price increases your share is worth more and you're worth more, and you call sell it for more than what you paid. It's not just about selling it, but also about holding it as an asset and making it a part of your net worth.
There are tons of internet brokerages lol
The only industries you could really make anything these days = oil/energy tech, metal
I hope this was a joke on your part. Not knowing one of the fundamental building blocks of American business = america further down the shitter
Fixed!

Privately held companies that need funding, and money to grow,
goto a special banker, that divides shares of that company up
and puts it on the market as an IPO (NEw Company).
Companies have to have a certain amount of income to even qualify
to be on the market.
When the shares are put up, they get the money initially sold to the public.
That is the only time the company makes money on the sale of stock.
Then the stock is traded according to demand.
It works like a auction.
This is an extremely watered down version of how it works.
Go here http://www.investors.com/learn/default.asp?tn=left
and you will learn greatly.

Then the stock is traded according to demand, which is largely determined by how many beers Ben Bernanke has the night before the FOMC meeting.

It's where 'experts' tell people that they can make money without working.

its not easy, but there is TONS of money there to be made...I play a little with stockings, but i intend to make that my real job in some time....
the market its hard for newbs...but if you study enough and you are a little lucky, the money is there

But that's what it is. Anyone who believes he can outsmart the market persistently (without being able to influence it, like the big players) is delusional. In the end the money always goes from the small to the big investors for that very reason.

Not many people know what the actual 'stock market' is, nor actually buy or sell stocks. So it is actually a good question. And once you get into stocks, bonds, futures, mutual funds, short and long, T-Bills, and tax free funds, it gets really complicated. Plus how much percentage it costs you to buy or sell the stocks, and how much percentage it costs to maintain a mutual fund yearly.
From one definition "A market is a public place where things are bought and sold. The term "stock market" refers to the business of buying and selling stock", but in this age, most of it is electronic anyway.
It is not easy. You can get very lucky, or lose. I have done both. Nowadays, I dwell in Mutual Funds.

Are you saying that some smarter "guys" like "us" are above the market?

YHOO? I can't believe anyone would get anywhere near it, long or short, given the whole on again/off again MSFT debacle.

How long have you had that Google stock? Would've loved to have had $10 million to buy shares with on their IPO. >:(

That's probably the best advise. In a nutshell: Swim with the big fish. You will get fucked in any case, but this way you will get fucked less.

Google has a problem with splitting I see. :D Are they going to wait for a $1000 price per share?
MSFT hasn't done jack in 4 years. Good thing I got in at the wrong time. ::)
-
I don't understand your strategy... you're long both YHOO and GOOG. I can't envision a situation where they would both rise in response to either the success or final failure of a MSFT deal with YHOO.
Sell GOOG right after 2Q results and hold on YAHOO until the end of the summer. GOOG had a very good Q2 (I made sure of that) and Yang is being pressured pretty bad to at least sell the search business to MSFT, which yea will mean most likely a loss of revenue for GOOG as what's being outsourced to them will be pulled out... I'll be out by then.
Hope I'm right; my getbig posting has been interfering with my trading of the late.

Yeah sure you did ::)
So you picked all the turns in the year thus far lol In reality you probably shorted the lows and bought the highs as most of the general public thinking they are smart and take a turn at being traders did lol.

Cute!
I am referring to your oil comment. Making a prediction in a market in which you have no edge whatsoever. I simply wish to know your reasoning.

A good rule of thumb is to find out what a new US President is holding in stocks and mirror them. Like when Bush was elected, if you would have know that his entire portfolio is nothing but oil and gas stocks, you would be a fricking millionaire now!!! ;D
