Title: Best restaurants you have ever been to?
Post by: body88 on July 01, 2008, 07:28:26 PM
Barton G - Miami ( crazy - one of a kind - complete with seven foot tall desserts you would see in a Willy Wonka movie. )

KO PRIME - Boston ( Best steak house I have ever been to.)

STK - NYC / L.A ( Awesome steak house)

Sibling Rivalry - Boston ( two brothers who are chefs, use ingredients that change daily, to battle it out on two different sides of a menu)

Atlantica - South Shore MA ( Seafood like you read about)

Chilis - Haha, I fucking love me some Chillis!

What are some of the places you go, when you are dining out, or relaxing on your diet?

I've eaten at Tavern on the Green on the west side of Manhattan. Bro's friend was the bar manager there for a while until he joined another resteraunt, though he wasn't there when I ate there

The food there is stuff anyone would like. Though I can't remember all that much because I was like 17 at the time and didn't know of the resteraunt's reputation until much later. Now I brag about it in an attempt to sound classy  ;D

It's apparently one of only two restaurants in NYC that still requires a tie and jacket to eat at.

Philly's got too many good places to list. Cuba Libre is real good in my opinion. Lots of diversity. Most of them are BYOB though.

The best, is hard to choose since some of them
Change owner/staff/menus.
Once an  incredible place
can be quite fad 2years later.

Some places can be incredible, with the ambiance,
design, location etc, with only above average food, I still
rank some of those places high.

One of the most interesting restaurants I went to
was a place in Tokyo (for Matt T,  Tokyo - Japan)

You must know the owner and no new customers are
served.
You can only go there if you are invited by the owner
or another customer.

No foreigners allowed, unless invited and
approved by the owners.

My friend said you are approved we can go there
tonight.
I never met the owner I will never know how they approved me.

When we came there it was just a building with a
ordinary looking entrance, no sign, nothing
that indicated it was a restaurant.

Inside, there were no windows just plenty of rooms.
Every group get their own room.

No prices on the Menu, my friend explained
that the price depends on who you are, and
how often you go there.

The food was good, but not the best I ever had.

He also asked me to not mention the name of the
restaurant to anyone.

Jerry's Deli has ANYTHING you could ever think of ordering.  Shaq was there every time we used to go, along with a few other players at the time.  I'm just not a fan of the area...too many bruins  ::)

Claim Jumpers is pretty good too...talk about HUGE portions  ;D

Red Square is teh gay.
Marie Nicoles is very good.
How about Le Bec Fin?
Standard Tap has very good food in Killadelph.
I also love me some Ray's Cafe and Tea House in the illa.
I just tried Davio's and it was off the chain.

You could be right about red square. I got completely hammered there, like staggered drunk so I might be skewed.

I had rack of lamb with pesto at Marie Nicoles and I almost had sex with the plate.

I don't really fuck with nice restaurants to often since the kids don't appreciate them and I don't like the bar/restaurant scene. I went to both Mortons and Capital Grille in the last year and really wasn't impressed. Budakan however was amazing.

At first, I was underestimating them because of eating many strange combination of materials..
But hey, i understood why they are said NO1.
Their food tasts are sooo original and VERY GOOD.
Many trial and error, trial and error.

One plate is copying my product. 8)
In stead, they showed me everything about el bulli.
Above all, Ferran and his brother Alberto are very cool guys and nice to me.
Their lab is like a toy box for me. Very interesting.

Cheftim, surprised to see someone on this board mention The French Laundry! You got class! And good taste! At first we needed a six month reservation but I've been there a few times now and can get in at anytime with a phone call.

Big secret place among the STARZ is in Laguna Beach called MON PETITE FLEUR and has to be the best in the world according to reports I've gotten. Hope to be fine dining there sometime soon one an invite arrives. I've heard that each course is a work of art. One of the fish courses is served in gold leaf.

Keith, you forgot to mention Ellis Island and the Sushi place over in Henderson that we all like so well.

Best prime rib so far is the prime as served at the House of Prime Rib on Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco.

Best chicken pot pie of all time was served at the Pot Pie House at the beach in San Francisco, but it's closed down now. Each pot pie was 35 cents.

Best Breakfast:  The Maple Tree - Virginia Beach, VA
Best Italian:  Giana's  - East Rutherford, New Jersey (just north/northwest of Giants Stadium)
Best Steak:  Still gotta go with Morton's - the double filet is incredible
Best Seafood:  Michael's - Timonium, MD (best crab cakes in Maryland, along with G&M over near BWI Airport)

Yes Stunt Ellis Island is great.  I was just thiniking of that place yesterday.  Uncle Joe is having his birthday party this Friday at Michael's.  Black tie affair.  Ain't going cause he said I needed to dress up.  So forget it.

Also, an unreal place for ribs and huge portions is RJ's for Ribs in Beverly Hills.  Had a big party there after the Special Olympics once and all the celebrities came.  I remember them telling me to save room for the dessert.  When you order cheesecake the piece weighs one pound and the chocolate layer cake had 9 layers.  It was great.

My favorite place in Kona is The Big Island Grill.  Awesome food and portions

Alexanders on Maui is the best lace in the world for Fish and Chips.  You get to pick what kind of fish and then coating you want.  They always have about 6 to 10 different fish available.  Love it

I also like the Polo Lounge I saw someone mention.

There will always be a spot in my heart for Hogie Haven in Princeton, NJ.  Probably went out of business years ago tho.

Also any Jersey pizzeria.  It's unholy how much oil they can get onto a single slice.

I do every aspect of gastronomy. The thing thats so fortunate of El Bulli is that no one will ever go there and every Chef on the planet has heard of it. And of course it's the greatest place on Earth! The place is make believe! Classical Cuisine reigns supreme and will always the cushion for these "Fads" that fall short. Molecular Gastronomy is jerked off!
Yeah. Telling the truth. We(me and my wife) had to eat in their kitchen.(Actualy better.)
Because the reservation of Bulli is occupied for couple of years. CRAZY...

Cool, Kyomu you will probably be the only getbigger ever, past and in the future
that visited and ate there.

But how can the restaurant itself operate at a loss since the year2000
and only make money on their books?

They charge over 400USD for a meal, how can they lose money????

Actualy, Its true. They lose their money with restaurant. They put real super high value on quality.
Buy many to choose what they want and possibly, they give rest to someone or throw them.

And yes. They make money from those books mostly and other from event or something.

You have to try Karen and Rei's.
It is right outside Cape May Courthouse.
Run by a husband and wife.
They have a good website.
Don't take the kids.

I can't remember the hotel name but it is right next to the convention center where the Arnold Classic is in Columbus.  All you had to do is go over this walkway and you are in the center.  They have absolutely the best room service food I have ever had in my life bar none.  It comes from some restaurant downstairs next to the lobby.  It is unreal.  Also, in Chicago there was a restaurant where we had dinner once in our hotel and it was awesome too.  Can't remember name.  I love talking about food ;D

that they still lost money on the food 2007  so it is famous info.

Been there and amazonia and fogo de chao, all outside of Dallas. Fucking great places to eat.  At Texas de brazil I asked the guy for filet that wasn't bacon wrapped about an hour later never saw it and we already paid our check, as I'm getting up to leave the guy comes runing over with a full skewer and said they made this per my request.  The waiter runs over with a plate and I obliged and ate a bunch more meat.  It was funny as hell.  They really like to stuff you with food there.

Heard about this new fine dining gimmick over in Europe someplace that is simply a very ornate table with a small walkway for the wait staff.

Once you are in your seat, you are strapped in and you and your party, the wait staff and the table are hoisted a thousand feet overhead for the ultimate in fine dining accomodations..... or so they say.

I'll see if I can locate the picture of it and post it here if successful.

I forgot to mention Charlie Palmer's at the Four Seasons in Las Vegas. It was so good that I ran into the kitchen and tipped the chef half way through my meal.

Keith, you're crazy to miss that dinner function with Uncle Joe at Michael's. If I'm there, can I go as your rep?

Best restaurants you have ever been to?

Joel Rebouchon's in Paris, no doubt. It is worth all the 3 stars it has in the Michelin guide. Best sautéed fillet mignon au sauce bearnáise I've ever had. American food is utter crap. What passes for luxury cousine in the U.S would be regarded as middle-class every day food by european standards.

Cigaretteman..... There is a  Joel Rebouchon's in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand. Basis dinner price is $350 but I had good friend who dined there and laughed when I mentioned that $350 price-tag. They're final bill was way about that figure and they refused to offer the details, but they did say that the food was very good.

Adjacent to the fine dining room is a somewhat smaller  Joel Rebouchon's dining area that looks more like a fancy bar than a find dining place.  They serve small plates off the menu with very high price-tags but nothing compared to the fine dining room.

Based on your recommendation, I'm gonna give it a try my next visit during the USA championships. I just hope I can understand what the menu has to say. Most times when I go to similar places, I just end up asking the waiter to bring me something that tastes like Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup and an entre' that looks and tastes like a Porterhouse steak with strict instructions to lay off the escargot and the insides of any creature that once lived upon the face of the earth. So far I've never been disappointed.

I can assure you that one of the better meal deals in town is at Ellis Island, Koval lane behind PARIS (the coffee shop type room in the back). Great meals at great prices but not a fancy venue by any means. Sometimes the steak dinners are in the $6 range. Ask about the SPECIAL as it usually isn't mentioned in the menu - You simply had to point to the picture of the steak on the menu cover. My last visit to Hooters in Las Vegas was definitely my last visit to Hooters in Las Vegas. All the beautiful ladies who used to deal at the tables somehow got 30 years older and fat. I hear that they heard a rumor that the place was changing hands and the all left en-mass leaving openings for some company who fills in under similar circumstances.

Chicken wings were still good though. The chicken wing chef must have stayed.

Ask Keith about the best Sushi place in the state of Nevada. In fact it's the best I've ever had anywhere. It's a sushi buffet but they serve all sorts of other type food and everything is igh quality. In fact each piece of sushi looks like a piece of art.

It's out in Henderson but I forget the name. Go during certain hours and the price is reduced almost in half. Keith will fill us in with the details when he reads this.

Keith should know a lot of about food.  He's overeaten quite a bit of it.

I just got back from Vegas. I stayed at the Planet Hollywood. Really cool hotel. Had a great room with great food. They had this really good sushi place called Koi. Really expensive but excellent fish. They had a lobster roll, that was incredible. The albacore was amazing. The toro was so good but 20 dollars a piece. My bill came to $200 and I was just at the sushi bar.

It's make believe. American Chefs are the very best in the world! Every other country relies on tradition. There's no rules in cooking. When an American goes to France for vacation? They visit three or four Michelin star restaurants. 99% of French people have never been to one in their life! The Ital's are the worst! No chicken in pasta, no cheese on fish pasta, no cappucino's in the afternoon! It's all silly.

Have you ever tried Barton G in Miami? I would be lying if I said my memory was superb.... You spend any time in Boston? Few places here you must try if you are in the area.

I don't know if I'd say "the best", but I ate lunch at a place called Il Mulino up in the Village earlier today.  Awesome Italian food.  It was pricy, so I assume it's considerd a "good" restaurant.

You live in Texas, right? I hear great things about Dallas, I need to check it out.

In the north end. The Calamari Cafe. Totally stole their idea of serving the pasta in the pan. Great, very rustic way to serve a pasta course. Very, very cool for dinner parties as well.

Classic! I thought the same thing when I first saw that.

If you are into Calamari, check out the daily catch in the north end....best Calamari in the city. The place is a dive, but the Calamari is superb. I spend a lot of time at Bricco when I am in the North end, the filet is great.

Check out KO PRIME located in the nine zero hotel (if you are in to steak). I am a Big fan of Teatro ( on Tremont) as well.

Jedi, believe me, you definitely got ripped off at Koi to the tune of $200. But I've spent that kind of money at some of the steak houses in LA and thought nothing of it because I enjoyed it. Sounds like you did the same at Koi.

But take it from an old time sushi eater - It's almost impossible to spend more than $20 in some of the better sushi joints when the price is right.

Try to eat more than $20 worth of sushi in one of the better places in Hawaii and you'd be full for the next couple of days. I'm a big sushi eater and have never been able to drive my bill over $12. The sushi plates are delivered by little trains and your bill is figured by the color of the empty plates stacked in front of you. In another the sushi passes by on little rafts and you just take what you want and the bill is tabulated in the same manner.

First time I had sushi in LV was at that sushi bar in the Orleans and my bill was $42. I almost fell off my futon. No boats, no trains, just a foreign looking sushi waiter.

Ask Keith for the name of the sushi buffet place in Henderson and you'll get the best in town for about $12 (all the sushi you can eat plus a wide variety of American grub and a chocolate waterfall and ice cream and tea and  doughnuts, and a glass of milk even). Next time you go to LV try it. Just about guaranteed you'll like and will be going back.

I agree with you completly, but the sushi was the best I ever had, and I am from California. But your tottaly right, its not worth 200. They had sake there that was over 900 dollars. Some sake was in the thousands. I would LOVE to eat sushi in Hawaii. What island do you recommend?

JEDI, I recommend them all but am more familiar with the sushi joints on Oahu.

Japanese customers are something unique. When they take us out to dinner, we are probably drinking that $800 - $900 saki you mentioned and I do know that they like to order the most expensive items on the menu even  when they don't know what the hell it is. In Hawaii the most expensive sushi is relatively cheap by Japanese standards, but go to the Ginza and expect to leave dinner with a $1,000+ tab. And that's just for the starters.

How about Prime Rib!|? Best Prime Rib joint in the San Francisco Bay Area is The House of Prime Rib on Van Ness Avenue. So good that you have to reserve a table days or even weeks ahead.

Best prime in Vegas is Lawrey's House of Prime Rib on East Flamingo a bit past Paradise. Great place except for those little waitresses who wear those old style granny uniforms and take your order. I think that they are told to try to be your mother while asking what you want to eat.

They deliver your entree via a huge cart and cut your slab of beef from a larger slab of beef kept nice and warm in that cart. Then they throw on some mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, and some English pudd'en which is just an inflated doughnut without the sugar coating. In the old days it merely sopped up the extra gravy but we Americans eat it now.

Not cheap but damn good meat!

For cheap Prime Rib, try it at Ellis Island. It's cooked differently and not as great as Lawry's but it's my second best place in LV to get a good cut of meat. Last time I ate there, it was only $12 and that included the salad and all the trimmings and a great big glass of home made beer.

Thanks Stunt, I appreciate it. I ate also at the Oyster Bar. I had a steak with scallops wrapped in bacon and they added that creamed spinach and I also ordered a ceasar salad. It was probably the best steak I ever ate and the scallops were incredible. I would like to try a really good piece of prime rib. Thanks for the advice. Vegas has so many incredible restaurants. I love it there. They are building that city walk now down there, and selling condo's on the strip and time shares. I am talking right next to Ceasars and Bellagio. I was so impressed with Vegas. I saw that Ferrari expo at the Wynn, damm that hotel is amazing.

I think you mean City Center, Jedi. Don't know if those condo prices have come down yet but they recently got some Dubai partners to keep it afloat. If you got that kind of money it might be a good time to make an offer and see if they take it because real estate is really suffering big time in Sin City. I have not heard anything to the contrary but it appears that that project will be completed even while it suffers through this economic slump.  Sad to say that there have been more than one death while building that project.

There is an old apartment complex smack dab between the Ballagio and City Center. It's set back about 50 yards from the Strip and originally sold approximately $40,000  per unit. They never did sell out when the new City Center was planned and now the City Center project is building around them, which places that Jockey Club in one hell of a great location. Some of those  Jockey Club apartments have an unobstructed view of the Bellagio Fountains and the Strip beyond it.

That City Center will have a huge hotel casino and a large entertainment center.... Cirque du Soleil Elvis show plus a couple of apartment complexes with two leaning towners and a huge hotel apartment complex. It appears that it will be a major city within the city of LV. I wonder what kind of effect it will have on the Strip traffic which is currently one hell of a mess.

40k per unit? Are they nice units? Shit, a studio apt in the nicer areas of Boston is going to cost you 300 - 400k. Sounds like you can get property cheap out there.

Thats not true, be fair. A lot of the chefs cooking in American kitchens, are from Europe.

But European food cooked by European chefs in the U.S does not make it American food. I hope you can comprehend this on some level.
