Title: Is it possible to organize an IFBB 'American Open' in 3 weeks' time?
Post by: Tre on July 03, 2008, 02:33:17 PM
We've got 3 weeks.

Would it be possible to stage an IFBB 'American Open' (pro qualifier) for all the Europeans who just got screwed by Ben1?

Although logistically nightmarish, what a wonderful show of true sportsmanship and goodwill it would be for the IFBB if such a thing could be pulled off in time to be held in conjunction with the NPC USAs in Las Vegas.

It's too bad no one thought of this idea sooner, but I've always liked the idea of having open pro qualifiers around the world.  Why not start in the good ol' USA?

Tell me how we can make this happen.  Hell, we've even got a venue available, if needed.  ;D

For once, I'm in agreement with you except that it would still interfere with the NPC USA attendance and the IFBB may not allow it.  However who knows.

An event planned for Sunday?  (The BA show was planned for Sunday)

What events does the NPC stage on sunday?

Because it would be an 'open', the American guys would have the opportunity to compete as well.  I like the idea of a blended competition...just as we see in track & field.  Yes, the Olympics and World Championships give us the best-vs-best from countries around the world, but the regular Euro and American grand prix events allow the 2nd-tiered competitors a chance to face international competition.

It's probably too late to make it happen, but I sure wish Ben1 had given us a heads-up sooner that he might possibly cancel this event.

We already have a pro qualifier, it's called the "USA Championships"...

Do you think he's full of shit or do you think there were outside influences.....I'm looking for a serious answer here Chick, after all this hype, for it to be suddenly dropped seems strange doesn't it?

LOL...there were no threats...just an idea, and the hope that enough competitors would pay to cover the costs. No compeitors= no money.

What about his claims that the IFBB would blackball any company that sponsored his show?

Claims are just that...claims.

Most companies have big money vested in with the NPC and IFBB...why would they want to jeopardize that relationship for a show with o history, no sanction, no credibility, etc?

I guess that's what I'm asking......are sponsors under contract with the NPC/IFBB or can they sponsor anyone they want.........if they can, why would they be jeopordizing their relationship with the NPC/IFBB?

It's called good business...there are many advantages and doors that are opened to companies and athletes that wave the union flag, no different than any other business.

Seems like the IFBB needs the companies and their sponsorship dollars a lot more than they need the IFBB.  So why would the IFBB think they're in the driver's seat in the realtionship?  Why would the companies need to bow to them to "maintain the relationship" and not the other way around?  Last I checked, the "golden rule" was "he who has the gold makes the rules".  The companies have the money, the IFBB doesn't.

No one said thats what they thought,,,it's a win-win situation. Paying out monies to other feds, organizations, unproven promoters, etc....to get to the same fan base anyway...makes no sense.

No, you said their motivation for not sponsoring the show was to "not jeopardize the relationship" (with the IFBB), not that sponsoring the other show didn't make financial sense.

Supplement companies sponsoring bodybuilding events doesn't make any sense to me in the first place.  National level competition bodybuilders don't really use those kind of supplements.  Friends and family members of national level bodybuilders don't use those kind of supplements.  Schmoes don't really use those kind of supplements.  16-26 year old guys who do use those kind of supplements don't fly to Vegas for the weekend.

Well, I know what the IFBB is getting out of it ($$), but I fail to see how the supplement companies benefit.  Anyone with an IQ over 80 knows pros and top amateurs don't use supplements.

What are you talking about?

For months, Ben1 maintained that he had plenty of sponsors and media coverage which had nothing to do with the IFBB

So, given the sound financial footing and the support of the 'hundreds of competitors' (his words) who were entering, how could his business have been impacted by this monopoly that you allege?
