I was on a flight the other day with a girl in her early 20s who looked to be about 5-11, maybe 6 feet tall. Her look was a cross between semi-athletic and frumpy.
What drew my attention, however, was the thickness of her Achilles tendon. They were pretty gross (my opinion) to look at, but intriguing nonetheless.
Does having a thick Achilles give her any advantages in athletics?

Because even fat people generally have normal-sized tendons, and since she her lower body wasn't that heavy, I figured there had to be some reason why hers were so big.

But it's entirely possible that many other people have the same condition and that there is some reason (benefit) for it. I don't believe I've ever noticed it before.

Epic looking at tendon thickness

I can answer this... (lots of research on foot structure to help interpret footprints found in the field... a couple of GetBiggers might know what I mean by that).
A thickening of the Achilles tendon is actually a cold adaption... usually accompanied by a robustness of the lower leg.
Cold adaption in northern Europeans (everyone except the Vikings: sexual selection for stature and strength) is usually expressed by a foreshortening of the limb ratios... shortened forearms and shins, which in turn shows as a thickening of the musculature and reduction in the size of the hands and feet.
Similar trends are evident in Neanderthals... archaic Neanderthals are replete with cold-adaptive features (200,000 to 75,000 years ago) which gradually seem to have been bred out, presumably by intermixing with modern humans. The modern humans who replaced them (possibly diluted them) then in turn began to evolve along similar lines due to similar environmental pressures.
I myself have some very obvious cold-adaptions: short limbs, short stature, small hands and feet... but it does have some bodybuilding benefits.
At 5'5'' I have (proportionately) huge Dorian-like calves: 17.5'' cold with a gastroc that extends fully half way down my shin and a soleus muscle that extends two thirds the way down my shin... in fact, my lower legs are so robust that my ankle measurement (9.75'') actually exceeds my heel-to-toe foot length (9''). Similarly, my forearm muscles extend all the way to my wrist with practically no evident tendon... makes it difficult to wear a watch.

That's 165 cm (if memory serves)... that's really, really short.
I'm built like a gorilla though (thick torso, legs and shoulders) so it never really bothered me. Hard to complain when you've naturally got great bodybuilding proportions... anyway, 5'8'' or 5'9'' is the average for males here in Ireland.

I know that you enjoy misquoting people in order to discredit them... but I would warn you against using that tactic with me.
Last time you started this bullshit with me I told everyone that you were a disturbed 15-year-old shut-in whose mother had written Ron a tearful letter explaining your internet addiction... not true, but as I explained by pm I did it to illustrate for you how easy it would be for people to use your own tactics against you.
Instead of laughing this off you spent weeks attacking me. It was only when I added a few actual personal details: trailer park, living with your mom, no job etc etc did I receive a pm apology... then when Ron set the record straight I let things lie.

With regard to your comments on your physique, I think you have raised some interesting points. I suspect there is some basis in your observations. There is no doubt that climate conditions have an evolutionary effect on a population over time.
Can you post any pics of yourself so we can see the tendon attachments on your body as you have described.
Oh - and in anticipation of the inevatable responses from some to my question "Can you post any pics of yourself so we can see the tendon attachments on your body as you have described", not I am not gay. Ha ha ha...

gives the impression / illusion of a cankle. :-X Think they're gross in everyone's opinion, your not alone. Went out with a girl, thin fine body but that dam thickness of the achilles - lower gastroc... no good. tapered is best. that's why we are all on here anyway, bodybuilding, shape.
