Good answer,

Bodybuilding is mostly a science,
with sport incorporated movements.

I don't know, it definately is not a sport,
but not really a beauty contest either.

With all due respect Fatpanda, but 1 second  is a HUGE difference in a sprint.

For example "3 tenths" of a second would be a very large margin

Levrone even keeping pace with that dude (who I assume is some star runner?) is impressive.

Bodybuilding training is athletic ... and can be extremely athletic depending on the trainer and what is being done. But in a competitive sense, no, bodybuilding is not a sport. Not in the classic sense.

I believe bodybuilders to be athletes because their training is athletic. But it also must be said that many bodybuilders become one-trick ponies to their own health detriment.

One thing I'll give it to Coach is: he probably had more girls in his life than 10 of you guys attacking him...and I know that Dr John Berrardi had some of the finest women as well...While Coach could be many things - he is certainly not gay...(as certain as he is bellow average trainer and a bodybuilder...but nevertheless..)

Every time someone asks me if bb is a sport I ask them this: Whats the difference between a pro bb show, and a beauty pageant (other than the beuaty of course)?

Both require prep work in regards to : Tan, skin, diet, posing and bodyhair. Both require the participant, to lift weights, take supplements and diet very hard. Both are based on appearance, and are highly subjective. Theres no athletic ability involved.

Although a bb trains hard, these women train just as hard (pound for pound). The only difference between a pageant and a bb contest is the beauty. Shit, you can be an average guy, and once you take drugs turn into a superfreak champion. Look at guys like Levrone. It takes no superior athletic ability to be a pro bb, all you need to do is have great response to drugs, gentics for muscle proportion and the will to train.

Superior athletes have very rare, hand eye coordination, speed, endurance, agility and smarts. Look at your average NFL player. They train hard, study film, have superior hand eye coordination, superior endurance, toughness, speed agility and athletic ability. They partake in an actual athletic test every Sunday vs other freak athletes, and they do it while training with weights. They don't get to lift, eat, shit and sleep all day.

Sure bb is tough, but they are not athletes, and they shouldn't be compared to the real pros IMO. So Levrone can run fast, put him on an NFL field and he would  be carted off on a stretcher after 2 plays. Size means nothing if you don't have superior athletic qualities.

I don't disagree with much of what you say. However, in my opinion, a bodybuilder is an athlete (in his training, not his competing).

And to suggest a beauty pageant competitor trains as hard, anaerobically, as a bodybuilder (most, anyway) is ridiculous.

A person who 'trains' isn't automatically an athlete.

A bodybuilder does 20 sets for chest, so he's an athlete...
A kid goes 30 pushups every morning, yet he's not.

Actually, the beauty pageant "talent segment" often involves far more physical exertion than "posing".  If you insist that "oiled men in thongs" is a sport, there's no way you can say beauty pageants aren't, because they're pretty much the same thing.

what does the talent segment normally consist of?

flex all of your muscles simultaneously as hard as you can for the next 2 minutes and tell me how you feel ;)

I see your point....But, I can't get over one thing: An NFL player trains really hard in the weight room, diets, studies and still partakes in the athletic competition that is an NFL game every Sunday. Imo, that is a true athlete. I am not trying to put down bb's - ( they work very hard), but all they do is eat sleep and lift.

I know my pageant point is a bit out there, but is it really that off? A 115 lb woman training and dieting her ass off, is working as hard as she can. She may not have huge muscles, but the same effort is there, IMO. She may not move huge pundages, but she busts her ass as best she can. Just how I see it of course.

Earl, what is the difference though? I lift/train hard. Most of the competitors at my gym couldn't handle my workouts/intensity. Yet, I do not consider my self an athlete. Here's another thing, I actually do cardio work, and not the kind guys juiced up do (I.E. walking on the treadmill for 20 minutes  ::)).

Now, where is the difference between someone that works out, and some who competes? I train hard, I eat clean (year round). I just do not oil up, pose in tiny trunks. I fail to see how the latter makes ANYONE an athlete.

With all due respect Fatpanda, but 1 second  is a HUGE difference in a sprint.

For example "3 tenths" of a second would be a very large margin

pound for pound levrone is much much faster than dwayne chambers.

I dont know about that. Levrone was on a ton of sauce at the time of the race, and look at him now. At the same weight, Levrone would still get killed in a foot race by that guy.

You don't flex for 2 minutes straight.........where did you get that from?

Maybe that's why you placed 6th out of 4 competitors.

I dint know about that. Levrone was on a ton of sauce at the time of the race, and look at him now. At the same weight, Levrone would still get killed in a foot race by that guy.

???? levrone outweighed a world class sprinter by 50-100lbs and finished a mere sec behind him in a sprint.

and note i said world class, hence he was also using, in fact he admitted to being on -

Testosterone
EPO
HGH
Insulin
Modafinil
Liothyronine
  ::)

so i stand by my assertion that pound for pound levrone is a better sprinter.

Stick a pro bber in a high school football combine and see if he can last 30min........I'd bet anything he can't.

And please....enough with the Sport = competition, and vice versa. There are a billion things that would become Sport under that vague category.

hey buddy i'm just telling you what the dictionary says

technically competitive bodybuilding is a sport, i never said it was on the same level as football but it is still a sport

Earl, please address the above.

No it is a mental disorder. Like anorexia, a compulsive behavior, in need of attention, insecurity etc, etc...

You can disagree with earl...but there has to be some distinction between the guy who hits arms and chest before going out Friday night to the guy in the gym day in and day out, dieting, busting his balls etc. to get onstage  ;)

Are beauty pageants or bridge games considered sport? The former isn't much different from a bodybuilding show.

hate to burst your bubble but you are not bigger than the dictionary :P

an athlete is a person trained to COMPETE in sports

the training in the gym allows a bodybuilder to compete 8)

You said competition is what makes a sport a sport. A beauty pageant is a competition. By your logic, it's a sport. Same with any board game played between people.

Hey, just because most paraplegics could climb a flight of stairs faster than anyone on the Olympia stage doesn't mean you have to insult the Special Olympics over it.
