That's weird.  Most gyms have their trainers sell as many supplements as they possibly can and most of the time get a commission from the sales. What type of gym is it?

Yes.

Will the trainer "get into shit" if you train like a pussy and still look like shit after a few years? No.

He probably doesn't recommend shakes because

a) they sell some overpriced shit and he doesn't want to recommend that but cannot say a different brand or

b) the management is too ignorant towards supplements. I mean everyone knows these protein shakes make your balls shrink and cause cancer.  ::)

Could have been a snub…
Liability reasons (some trainers I know are only permitted to give training advice – NOT nutritional)…
Or if he charges clients for info, it would not be fair to them to give you the same advice for free.

I know it’s only one tiny question, but it always starts with one and can snowball quickly with many people who will try to exploit it.

Lawsuits! Since people react differently to supplements it's not a good idea to recomend them. There are many lawsuits each year over this, this guy is smart!

Trainers = are not licensed nutritionist's
if something happens to you medically we or the gym could be held liable (sued)

What? So licensed nutritionists can't get sued? Come on guys dust off those thinking caps.

The guy who wouldn't say what he was drinking was just being a jackass.

Not if they signed a waiver, and assumed the risk.

They could be sued, but if they were acting within the scope of their expertise then that would be a pretty soild defense.

A trainer is NOT acting within the scope of expertise, well, maybe a self taught Pro (Milos), but that is a long shot.

You can apparently sue anyone over anything these days.

The liability stems not from a matter of selling supps. but from suggesting to someone which supps. to use.

There was a big law case in 1999 where a client was told to buy certain supplements, one of which was a fat burner containing ephedra and Yohimbe. She was taking medication for hypertension, which should not be mixed with anything containing ephedra. This resulted in the client suffering a fatal stroke whilst working out. There have been other cases like this, but this was a huge one. The family was seeking damages of over $300 million or something like that.

dude was probably just being a dick...i worked at lifetime for a while and we did get commision for clients buying supps from them. It wasnt much so i never really recommended any of their ish other than multi vitamins and protein powder. I dont think it had anything to do with liability or not wanting to be unfair to his clients he just asked what protein he thought was good, not how much to take and when to take it and what exercises to do.

I agree with Epic, Liability is a big problem, I always have my clients use what I use or have used in the past and have very good results as long as there training and eating as prescribed......

BOY THAT'S A STUPID ANSWER

I'm a gym owner and have been a trainer for almost 15 years of pro athletes (nba, nfl, mlb), olympic hopefulls in figure skating, martial arts, college baseball, football, etc etc  and 3 ugly lesbians to boot. Here's my 2 cents.

If he trains you and you look like shit, it doesn't come back on him according to your logic? The reason is because of liability.
Most big gym trainers aren't allowed to give nutrition advice beyond the basics because most aren't qualified. NASM and ACE certs aren't where you're going to learn anything beyond formulaic training principles that focus on core stability, etc.

To address the original poster, the fact that this trainer in the gym is big and looks good is neither here nor there. People seem to assume that the big guy is the knowledgeable guy. The fact is he may be the genetic guy and/or the drug guy. Maybe too, he is the guy who'd know. The point is, you can't assume his level of education based upon his physique.

depends on the place..my gym gets pissed when i don't recommend whatever they sell even if it's shit. I just recommend things when people ask what's a better supplement if they are already going to buy something and are looking for better direction. I also answer alot of which is better and why or what would you take kinda questions if people come to me with them.
