Bush mentioned that he lifted the executive ban on offshore drilling.
He did so on his own accord. His own decision.
Um, why didn't he do this 7 and 1/2 years ago? He had the power all along, and chose to wait til now? I thought it was the freedom-hating granola libs stopping it. Turns out that while they're still yelling about it, Bush easily lifted the ban.
How can you blame the dems for the 7.5 years we haven't been doing offshore drilling? It was an executive ban. That means it was controlled by the president.
-
I guess u don't get it, lifting that ban does little. Congress has to act and the Libs have blocked offshore drilling. They are feeling increasing pressure to do so.

The day of the single biggest one-day drop in oil prices in five years — President Bush removed the executive order imposing a moratorium on offshore drilling in the United States.
Let me guess, just words right.

57 percent of Americans support drilling off-shore and in wilderness areas.
Barack Obama, lamented in mid-June that high gasoline prices have hurt Americans, but he later gave a much more accurate representation of the party line: “I think that I would have preferred a more gradual adjustment,” he said in an MSNBC interview. It should be noted that the Kyoto treaty calls for emissions reductions some 15 or 20 times as great as those induced by higher gas prices. Its goals would presumably require much higher gasoline prices — perhaps $7 or $8 a gallon, or even more — over a very long period of time. '
President Bush’s decision this week to allow preparation of leases for energy exploration on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) lets Republicans press their energy advantage even harder. Bush’s executive order of Monday removes all White House restrictions on the establishment of new oil leases. Democrats had been using these restrictions as an excuse for Congress to do nothing about oil exploration. The ball is clearly in the Democrats’ court. The OCS drilling ban expires on September 30, with the Department of the Interior’s fiscal 2008 appropriations. Although House sources believe it will almost certainly be renewed, that renewal will create another political pressure point on a good Republican issue close to this year’s election.
Recent polls show that between 57 and 67 percent of Americans want to drill for oil on the OCS. The U.S. Minerals Management Service (MMS) has estimated that there are 85.9 billion barrels of oil (11 years’ worth of U.S. consumption) and 420 trillion cubic feet of natural gas (an 18-year supply) sitting out there. And there could be much more, since many areas off the coasts remain unexplored.
-
In fairness to the worst President ever, there is also a congressional ban in place. :-\
-
the off drilling issue is a SUCKER issue for SUCKERS
I can't believe so many poeple are falling for this.

it does a lot?
Make up your mind. Methinks a true man of conviction would have lifted the ban on day 1 of his presidency.

Earth to this guy...
Bush has never cared with the libs thought. Remember "I'll continue this war, even if 99% of people are against it"?
Bush does what he wants. He didn't want offshore digging in 2001. If he had, he would have done it. He's very strong in his ideals. If you honestly believe that college kids in hemp shoes were the only thing stopping the oil lift for 7 years, you're insane.

missed the point completely my point is you wouldnt have been happy no matter what he did and would have bitched regardless, that has no bearing on why he did or didnt lift the ban...P.S. once you start a war A WAR WHICH PROBABLY 99% of this country wanted at one time you cant just pull out.

I voted for Bush twice and I've always supported offshore drilling. 99.999% of us will never view the Alaskan sunset, so drilling up there doesn't affect us - gas prices do.
Drilling off Florida's beaches, I'm not so keen on. But I understand if we can have $1.30 gas again (Hi 2001) I'm okay with it.
Bush does whatever he wants. He could pull out tomorrow. Iraq is ready. Their govt and people both want us out.

1.agreed
2.agreed but then again i dont really care about florida
3. completely disagree, if you really think that iraq is capable of sustaining itself i think your delusional. the country would fall into anarchy more than likely if we pulled out. LOL why is it when Iran fires missles its saber rattleing, but when iraq says leave its in all seriousness. They dont want us out they are just saying that to appear to be taking control.

Iraq's leaders have said they are ready. They have an army/police force ready to beat the fvck out of the insurgents the moment we (and our CNN cameras) leave. They know the people and language - they will root out the few thousand bad guys faster than our guys haven't been able to.
Iran's prez visited Iraq and it was a happy meeting. They're good buddies. They just want us out. Iran will make a ton of $ off of iraqi once iraqi oil starts flowing and they need to buy things to rebuild social infrastructure.

good point on the rooting out bad guys they would more than likely not fight with their hands tied as we have been forced to and therefore be much more effective. Still I dont believe they would be able to survive and be an effective government at this time. Just b/c they rattle their sabers doesnt mean they truely want us out.

They've accomplished 15 of 18 benchmarks that Bush believed they needed to complete, and the White house and military assure us that the surge worked and most terrorists are dead or on the run.
Their people want us out, polls show.
Our people want to leave, polls show.
Their govt wants to leave, public statements show.
Our congress wants to leave, public statements show.
What are we waiting on?

just b/c the surged worked doesnt mean its ok to leave yet.
POLLS MEAN NEXT TO NOTHING...again you love polls(no pun intended) but they are notoriously misleading and inaccurate(take a research methods class as i believe your in college and see for yourself)
Their government doesnt want us out they said that b/c they know we wont leave right now and they can look more assertive in taking control.
No shit our government wants us out nobody likes a war, this is the same congress that wont lift the drill ban as well.
