I want Windows XP... none of that Vista crap.
I usually buy from Dell.com, but all their stuff is Vista now.
Any advice? I want a fast, tough laptop with a 17 inch screen at least.
$2000 or so?
Looking for a good place to buy them from.
thanks!

A year and a half later, Vista STILL isn't compatible with a bunch of shit. Eventually it will be fine, but for now lots of legacy software has "hiccups" when you're running Vista.
I'm thinking about downgrading to DOS 2.0. ;D
-
If I was you I would get one of the intel centrino 2 mobile chips or AMD's new Puma mobile chip. They have just been released. IBM I know released some laptops with the new intel chipset and HP has some with the AMD puma chipset.
-
Guy I work with is constantly asking me to help him with his Vista.
It's messed, but still workable.
-
The primary issues with Windows Shitsta is that it's a resource hog and desktop navigation that used to take a click or two now takes 3, 4, 5 or more clicks (Windows Task Manager, anyone?).
Those extra clicks add up over the course of a day, and amount to thousands of extra clicks each month (or week, in some cases).
The fact that there are software compatibility issues is just icing on the cake.
The only computer I've bought in 2008 is a Mac (still in the box 2 months later! lol), but last year, I bought 2 PCs and a laptop and all had to be upgraded from Vista to XP after I got them home and found them unbearable to work with.
The people who 'like' Vista are just stupid people who don't realize what computers are here for.
-
just dual boot windows Xp with Vista ultimate 64...This way you get the best of both worlds...
Mac's are for Fagg.ots, plain and simple..
Vista/Xp are free on the internet
If you pay for software this day and age Your fucking stupid..

I installed an XP "Stripped" edition and it runs very well. OS is only 300 meg or so.

Yes that is what I have. The 300 mb one kept crashing.
I tried many before finding one that was not crashing my system. Stripped is the only way to go.

I got mine when it first came out and it was over 2000. Now they can be had for half that.
-
With dual/quad core systems and plenty of ddr3 ++ ram you will have no trouble with vista, believe me. oh and dx10 helps run alot of things faster.

toshiba or mac

i'll check out the toshiba, thanks.
My wife uses Vista, and it's horrible. I want to avoid that as long as possible.
I use a desktop. I would get a TON more work done if I could bring the laptop around the house while watching spongebob and racing cars all day.
-
I have a fujitsu I got from
www.frys.com
It is great. Got XP with it.
Vista sucks.
240 you can get one built as well.

I've got a friend who keeps urging me to get the HP dv6700t
And he's Asian, so you know he knows what he's talking about ;D

You know they make these things so they are obsolete in a year or two and then you gotta upgrade
I'd say 1500-2000 for a good one
-

hp is shit, i have a two-year old hp desktop and the cd/dvd drive started malfunctioning six months after i bought it, i also have a one-year old hp pavillon laptop and the cd/dvd drive started malfunctioning three months after i bought it, then the screen went blank. it turned out the motherboard died. i will never but an hp computer again. (although the hp service was superb)
240, you can get a good laptop for under $1,000, i paid $1,400 for mine last year (2 gb ram, vista business, 256 mb video card, etc), now you can buy a laptop with better specs for half that price. look for "back to school" specials.
-
No thongs and dreamtan??
Down with this thread FFS
-
As others have said, there is no need to pay over $1500 for a laptop unless you need to brag to friends about how much you paid. If you are a heavy game player, perhaps. If the majority of your use is to surf the web, buy a laptop for less and you'll still be able to do virtually everything the guy who spent $3000 can do.

Most likely your gonna have to buy vista and just put xp back on it ;) at least if you want a new laptop
-
You can buy it and say you want to put linux on it and don't want windows. Then put your own XP on it.

Consider the Macbook Pro. You can configure it to run XP or Vista, AND Mac OSX! :)

I don't believe you, because you're 100% wrong.
When I do ctrl-alt-del in XP, I get the Windows task manager immediately.
In Vista, I have to do ctrl-alt-del, then computer 'shuts its eyes' for 2 seconds, a menu comes up, and then I have to click on 'Start task manager'.
Even formerly simple tasks like navigating between file folders requires extra mouse-clicks in Vista.
Which begs the question: Why would anyone design a 'new' product that's worse - FAR worse - than the old product?
Vista is responsible for the re-emergence of Apple in the past year...which is great for the American consumer.
-

i did, this is why i said the service was superb but the point is that i do not want to send my computer in in the first place

I got mine last year it was $2,300 i think. It has Vista on it. What really pissed me off is I had just bought a new video cam for a laptop a few months before and it didn't work with Vista. I still have it and they still don't have the drivers for it to work.
-
I'm using a copy of vista Ultimate 64 bit with Sp1 downloaded, and the program works fine with everything...And I'm far from a Microsoft Fan boy...
The truth is Vista is faster for certain things...For copying large files...I.e 5 gig DVD's...However, XP is faster for almost everything else..

Why $2000 ? Buy cheap and update every year instead. I wouldn't spend more than a third of that and then buy new more often.

2000 is the ceiling. I'd happily spend $1000 and drop the other grand on hookers and blow.
-
Well the reason why it is more is because it is a gamers laptop. At least the model I have.
-
why buy a laptop. you work from home mostly right. buy a stationary. much better performance, bigger screen etc. etc. to many people buys laptops that dont even need them.
-
me too :(

why buy a laptop. you work from home mostly right. buy a stationary. much better performance, bigger screen etc. etc. to many people buys laptops that dont even need them.
And you can easily do upgrades yourself on a stationary, while laptops price/performance truly suck and most of them can't be upgraded when newer components become available.
