I think it hits more of the back of the traps but is the difference that significant? Anyone tried them and what are your opinions?
-
Anyone does Barbell shrugs from the back? yes
but is the difference that significant? doubtful
what are your opinions? variety is the spice of life
look up "hise shrugs" and the calf raise machine variable. also look up scapula shrugs
-
For me they work best with db, heavy weight pause at the top.
-
I did it once on the smith machine and totally f'd up my neck for weeks. I won't do them again and do not recommend that exercise.
-
I've never done them. It's just a waste of a power rack, imho. Either that or my traps just grow like weeds, especially since I did my first cycle. But even when I'm sick and disheveled I've got "roid traps" just from doing rack deads.
I think people with no traps need to stop doing so much direct work and just stick with the basics. I tried everything in the book to grow mine and nothing worked. Then I stopped doing direct work and they grew, especially when I did proper rack deads and floor deads.
-
nah, i think my rear traps get hit pretty good by working out rear delts.
-
I've always felt that the best way to do shrugs is with dumbbells
-
poliquin says the best way is to do it one trap at a time with dumbells to get a full ROM.
-
yeah i just alternate the sets with front then back... like wes said.. variety is the spice of life
-
Cutler does.
-
my ass tends to get in the way
I like to use a barbell to the front, bending slightly forward - better stretch and ROM
-
I used to do them just because whenver I did them in the front the bar would always hit my junk and that was no fun!
Now I do them to the front but on a smith machine, safer positioning for the boys!!!
-
Cutler does.
He also showers ten X a day......

I think they are great, once you learn to get your posture right and move your ass out of the way. They really hit the lower traps. I find they increase flexibility and build good power for fighters and other athletes that need upper body speed. For bodybuilding hold at the top. If you have trouble with balance etc, trip them on smith machine.
Lee Haney was the master of these and his lower traps were outstanding.

Thanks guys...will do from them time to time....
-
The Hammer Strength shrug machine allows you to vary where you pull with the shrug and the BB is not hitting your ass when you do em reverse. Pretty flexible machine for doing different angle shrugs in.
-
yes....but only if they're done correctly & alternated with doing them to front
-
On Smith machine but not nearly as heavy as to the front. Lee Haney swore by them for upper back/trap size.
-
upright rows with dumbbells are great for the traps.
-
nope, only use dbs regular and from the front
-
This is the best bar for shruggin and its great for behind the back shrugs especially

If your too lazy to click on the link to fcukin bad ;D
Keeps your junk and ass out of the movement however your doin them
-
Lee Haney made rear shrugs popular.
Just like Yates made reverse grip barbell rows popular
..and Ronnie Coleman made front squats popular again.
-
I do them from the back. I rate them very highly.
Made a lot of differene to my traps in size. Very visable through clothes.
I do 5, add weight, do 5, add weight do another 5. That is one set. My main trap exercise

and by dumbells you mean Big Macs ?

When I did do them, I noticed a that the bottom of the traps got real thick. But they are awkward to do for me. I have to have the bar above my butt, because i got a big ass ;D.

same here. and I have a tiny ass :(
-
I used to do them just because whenver I did them in the front the bar would always hit my junk and that was no fun!

How short are your arms? ???
-
No,my big fat ass keeps getting in the way.
-
just do em to the front.
-
just do em to the front.
...I don't have to worry about my package getting in the way :)
-
better from back
-
you can use more weight from the front and that is the single most important reason for doing them in front.
-
yes big weights equal a big ego.
-
By the way traps are a muscle group that should not be too developed if the dude got a short neck...he will be neckless..(if that is a bad thing) :D

Agree. You can do them standing or sitting. It's a great machine.
-
Yes.I also use dumbells, straight bar in the front, the seated machine, sometimes I stand while using the machine, and sometimes I turn around standing and use the machine.
