My son, who works at a movie theater, recently while working the concessions, waited on a family who spoke only Spanish. After a few minutes of not being able to take their order, he asked a bilingual worker to help him. Afterwards when the family had left to see their movie (which was in English...go figure), my sons co-worker told him that the family was mad that he didn't speak spanish. Good thing i wasn't standing around.
Now enough is enough!
Its time we put our foot down on this! It's time to make people who don't speak passible english second class citizens.
That's right. They should not be allowed to enjoy may of the basic freedoms English Speaking Americans do like social services, free education etc...
They should have to wear a patch and carry either a electronic translator or a spanish english dictionary.
If they don't like it. They can get out.
Children who don't speak English should be held back a full year and taught English 1 entire school year.
Discuss. ;D

Obama thinks you should be learning Spanish, so get to it pronto senorita.

It's a toss up between Persian and Arabic.
What do you think I should go for?

Persian sounds more chic.

The next foreigner that smacks you with a sign threatening jihad... ask him what he speaks.
Then get that busted nose fixed, go to the barnes and noble, and get yerself a book on that language.

I know what language they speak: Urdu
You fluent in your future official national language yet 240? Or do you only speak the language of bullets?
-
Ozmo, right on brother.
It is completely ridiculous that we do not enforce this more. Eliminate all non-English writing, outside of formal education in school, and you will see a drastic change. We have ESL programs, cheap classes at community colleges. Hell, buy a freaking English to Spanish tape or dictionary.
Build the wall, mine the fields, train the dogs, and hire the ICE & BP agents.

Better yet, we should gather up all hispanics, put them in a concentration and gas them to death. ::) ::) ::)
Land of the free, home of the brave!
Foh sho!

Spanish? I am functional in it, but certainly not fluent.
I don't understand the 'launguage of bullets'. Most of us americans love the second amendment and follow the law to a tee. I certainly do.

How will they ever speak English if they are dead?

How will they ever speak English if they are dead?
I'm pretty sure "Nooooooooooooooooooooooo oo..... gasp gasp" works in both languages!
-
How will they ever speak English if they are dead?
Well, it's certainly easier to gas them death than to force a Mexican who hasn't even gone to school to learn English. Well, gassing a Mexican to death will be difficult. They are haaaaaard to kill like a muddafucka! I once saw a drunken Mex fall from the roof a 6-story building to a platform made of hard wood somewhere around the 1st floor. I saw the guy mowing my neighbor's lawn the next day. I ain't kidding you. True story.
-
How will they ever speak English if they are dead?
Besides, why do you ask such hard questions?
-

Better yet, this country should stop being so PC and actually make immigrants assimilate the way they did back in the early stages of this country. Better yet, don't let every pregnant Hispanic stay in this country and birth their babies. Better yet, do like I said and eliminate any writing but English on businesses, gov't forms, etc and FORCE them to assimilate. We have more of a need to learn other languages besides Spanish. Is it functional? Yes. Necessary? No.

Speaking as someone who lives in an officially bi-lingual country, ...I will tell you from experience that once you bring in the "language police", ...it's all downhill from there. If you think tax-payer money is wasted now, ...wait til you see how fast a bureaucratic language cop can waste it.
When I think of language police, there is one case in particular that continually stands out in my mind.
Sadly, it was not an unusual anomaly, but a quite frequen occurence. It was the case of an older Italian man who had arrived in Montreal with nothing but a sandwich and the clothes on his back. He busted his chops for years to build a business which he did... a successful dry cleaning business which served his community for years.
One day, while his adult son was running to the bank, a language cop came in, ...and hit the roof because the old man did not speak fluent French. They almost had to close down the business. After 45 years of serving his community, providing jobs within his community, paying taxes, etc., etc., his business was almost shut down because the man couldn't speak fluent French. You see, he had no time for French classes. He was too busy busting his balls all those years working his ass off trying to put food on his family's table and build a business so he could live the Canadian dream.
They ruled that he was not allowed to work the front desk in the dry cleaning store, ...that he had to hire someone who spoke fluent French or shut the business down. WTF? It was HIS business, his FAMILY business that he built from scratch, ...but he was not allowed to work there. Fortunately he had sons that were able to take over the business. Sons who were born in Quebec, and who were fluently bilingual that he could sign the business over to. They ruled he could do odd jobs at the store, and work in the back, but he was not allowed up front to interact with the customers. He had built that business from the ground up. He knew everyone of those customers by name... it was a huge uproar with even some of the most militant French ONLY activists saying this had gone too far.
If some idiot gets upset that you don't speak HIS language, ...how does that make you any less of an idiot to get mad that he doesn't speak YOURS? I've heard the arguments that are frequently trotted out... "Well he's in America. It's MY country, ..he should speak MY language". Well guess what? He's an American too. You're also in HIS country, and HIS language happens to be Spanish. Why don't you speak Spanish? Another argument is "Well this country spoke English first", ...not in California they didn't. But nevertheless, ...that's like Sony saying screw CD's. We produced vinyl records. If some asshat wants to listen to music, he better get a record player. Or even the post office saying "Screw You! if you want your package delivered from Texas to NYC, we're not sending it air mail, ...it's going in the saddle bag of some rider, and it's gonna take 3 months to get there. If the 'Pony Express' was good enough for Custer, ...it's good enough for you"
You can stomp your feet and complain like a "wussy" as some around here would refer to that kind of behaviour, ...or you can realize the world is changing and that no amount of stomping your feet & whining is going to prevent that, ...or you can step up to the plate and learn an additional language that will give you an advantage over those in society who are unilingual.
Let Juan, Pedro, José, and Bubba remain unilingual if they choose. Do you complain that Bubba drops out of school in the 8th grade? Do you demand he be forced to finish high school and graduate from University? If people choose to limit their options & opportunities in life, ...shouldn't that be their own free choice to do so?
The Declaration of Independance says you have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, ...but no where does it say you must speak a certain language. That would be fascist, ...you're not for fascism are you?
-
Americans are guilty for not beating the shit out of the inmigrants the first day they didnt learn english.
-
"Well he's in America. It's MY country, ..he should speak MY language". Well guess what? He's an American too. You're also in HIS country, and HIS language happens to be Spanish. Why don't you speak Spanish?
I think you are missing the point that most of these people aren't American, they are Mexican.
And they were the ones who were pissed that the kid didn't speak spanish.
And great "story" about some guy that was thrown out of your Fascist country ::)
-
Like I said before, why is it that the white immigrants from Europe in the 1800s and 1900s had no problems learning English while also holding onto their other languages. Why is it that in 2008 the hispanics refuse to learn English. If you don't want to speak the language of this country, GTFO. Why should we be going out of our way to cater to people who want to do nothing to help this country and want everything handed to them.
Ozmo's son should've brushed them to the side and served the next group of people. I find it hilarious that they were actually upset that he didn't speak spanish. Nevermind that they're not upset that they don't speak English.

Speaking as someone who lives in an officially bi-lingual country,
Y'all will be tri-lingual soon. We're gonna send up all the Mexicans to get that yummy oil you potheads are sitting on. Tengo crude oil...

Y'all will be tri-lingual soon. We're gonna send up all the Mexicans to get that yummy oil you potheads are sitting on. Tengo crude oil...
You can send all you want, ...I doubt they'll go further north than the 49th parallel, ...just too damn cold! ;D
No, ...I think they'd prefer to hang out in sunny California, Texas, Florida etc., so they can be closer to you. :-*
-
Jag, I complain when Bubba drops out of 8th grade because then I pay his future welfare check.
-
Jag, I complain when Bubba drops out of 8th grade because then I pay his future welfare check.
Be glad! That's a reason to celebrate. You ought to be freaking out when Tyler graduates from Wharton 'cause Bubba's welfare cheque is gonna cost you a heckuva lot less than Tyler's Wall Street welfare cheque ;D

The Declaration of Independance says you have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, ...but no where does it say you must speak a certain language. That would be fascist, ...you're not for fascism are you?
How does insisting an immigrant learns to speak passable English make it fascists?
do they not still get all the rights to speak WHAT they want?
Take ALL the money they are spending right now on duplicate forms, signs, interpretors, schools etc... And spend it on enforcement. In a few short years after a 2 year grace period for people to learn it or get the fvck out, they can spend the money on just making sure future immigrants know it.
When I think of language police, there is one case in particular that continually stands out in my mind.

did the son know how to speak it? good enough. The father needed to learn it or get the fvck out. Give him a fair grace period.
Someone not "having the time" is complete bull shit anyway. he can study 1-2 hours a day until he learns.
They ruled that he was not allowed to work the front desk in the dry cleaning store, ...that he had to hire someone who spoke fluent French or shut the business down. WTF? It was HIS business, his FAMILY business that he built from scratch, ...but he was not allowed to work there.
Did he have regulations and codes that he had to follow for him to conduct business in Montreal/Quebeec?
Was there a flock of liberal assholes complaining that he couldn't run his busioness the way he wanted to when it came to those codes of business?
I don't think so.
It's not too much to ask for someone to speak the fvcking language.
If some idiot gets upset that you don't speak HIS language, ...how does that make you any less of an idiot to get mad that he doesn't speak YOURS?
Because it's the language of the country. An if i'd was living in his country i show it and the people the respect of learning the language. Not siting around and complaining that the person taking my order did know it.
Are you fvcking kidding me? So should every one in retail know all 100+ languages in the whole world?
The stupid Mexicans don't get it, becuase liberal pussy assholes don't make em. the Russians, Chinese, Koreans...etc... fortunately do get it.
Maybe that's why these candidates don't give a shit about the hisspanic vote. Because these stupid fvcks don't care enough to learn the language.
he should speak MY language". Well guess what? He's an American too. You're also in HIS country, and HIS language happens to be Spanish. Why don't you speak Spanish? I wonder if they are American. And it wouldn't matter anyway, it IS our national language. NOT Spanish. And that family needs to learn it or get their leeching asses out of here.
Or, you can stop the nonsense and PUT the accountability on those who seek our birth right.

Do you demand he be forced to finish high school and graduate from University? If people choose to limit their options & opportunities in life, ...shouldn't that be their own free choice to do so?
When was this about graduating from college? ::) This is about learning the English language so we can all function as a populace better, communicate better and live in a more prosperous unity. NOT segregated into communities of like language. which is what's happening now.

That's crazy. I agree people that live here need to learn the language. The only concern I'd have is how we treat tourists/visitors who don't speak the language. But I guess even those folks need to learn how to order a cheeseburger.

How does insisting an immigrant learns to speak passable English make it fascists?
do they not still get all the rights to speak WHAT they want?
Not under the language police. For a while speaking English in public in some parts of Quebec could get you a good ass whooping.
Take ALL the money they are spending right now on duplicate forms, signs, interpretors, schools etc... And spend it on enforcement. In a few short years after a 2 year grace period for people to learn it or get the fvck out, they can spend the money on just making sure future immigrants know it.
Funds spent on duplicate forms are a mere pittance and do not even begin to scratch the scratch on the scratch of the tip of that colossal iceberg called the military spending fiasco in Iraq. Divert a bit of those funds and you'd probably be able to hire private tutors for every single one of them, ...one who'd pour them a beer or a shot or two of tequila while giving them a backrub and a foot massage! ;D
did the son know how to speak it? good enough. The father needed to learn it or get the fvck out. Give him a fair grace period.
The father spoke Italian fluently, as well as English fluently, ...his challenge was his French.
yes his son was fluent in French, as well as English & Italian. He was born in Quebec.
the problem was also compounded by the fact that in Quebec, there were English language schools and French language schools, and for a time you could pick which language you wanted your child to be educated in. most people chose English, ...including immigrants. in Quebec, ...it is now the law. unless you are a temporary resident of the province (ie: a diplomat) all kids regardless of their mother tongue MUST be educated in French!
Someone not "having the time" is complete bull shit anyway. he can study 1-2 hours a day until he learns.
Did he have regulations and codes that he had to follow for him to conduct business in Montreal/Quebeec?
Was there a flock of liberal assholes complaining that he couldn't run his busioness the way he wanted to when it came to those codes of business?
I don't think so.
Ya the codes were introduced after a separatist revolution in Quebec demanded everything had to be in French.
It's not too much to ask for someone to speak the fvcking language.
No it's not, ...but it is too much to ask someone else to speak YOUR language while displaying an unwillingness to speak or learn HIS.
Because it's the language of the country. An if i'd was living in his country i show it and the people the respect of learning the language. Not siting around and complaining that the person taking my order did know it.
Not for long it isn't.
Look up the the 'Security & Prosperity Partnership' (SPP) Y'all will be speaking Spanish in no time, possibly French too
Are you fvcking kidding me? So should every one in retail know all 100+ languages in the whole world?
No, ...but you have an added advantage and become a more valueable entity when you are multi-lingual
The stupid Mexicans don't get it, becuase liberal pussy assholes don't make em. the Russians, Chinese, Koreans...etc... fortunately do get it.
Are these stupid Mexicans, ...or are they newly arrived Americans not yet fluent in English?
Are some perhaps Puerto Ricans? You know a strange thing happens when you colonize another territory,
...especially one that has been speaking a different language for centuries. You end up with a a territory of people who speak a different language, ...strange how that happens isn't it? You would think that with the same stroke of the same pen that turned the island into a US island, that automatically generations of Puerto Ricans would all of a sudden be fluent in English instantly... presto... like magic! It's always surprising when that isn't the case isn't it? ;D
Maybe that's why these candidates don't give a shit about the hisspanic vote. Because these stupid fvcks don't care enough to learn the language.
On the contrary. I think candidates care very greatly what they think, as well as how they vote.
look at mcCain, he's all for amnesty, so many can vote for him, and bring their families over to vote for him too.
I wonder if they are American. And it wouldn't matter anyway, it IS our national language. NOT Spanish. And that family needs to learn it or get their leeching asses out of here.
Why do you call them leeches? Don't they spend money, buy goods & services, contribute & stimulate the economy? Without these people buying tickets in movie theatres, your son may not even have a job.
He would have to leech off YOU, ...instead... thanks to Spanish speaking Americans, ...he's gainfully employed. :D
Or, you can stop the nonsense and PUT the accountability on those who seek our birth right.
Your birth right. Sounds to me like the words written on the base of the statue on Ellis island says nothing about origins of birth, ...merely condition of existence. Do you no longer want to welcome tired huddled masses?
If not, ...maybe YOU should be the one to leave America since you're no longer in accord with what she stands for?
When was this about graduating from college? ::) This is about learning the English language so we can all function as a populace better, communicate better and live in a more prosperous unity. NOT segregated into communities of like language. which is what's happening now.
It was simply an analogy, ...an example of people forcing something down someone elses throat for their own good because it would be beneficial to them in the long run. At least that's how I'm choosing to frame it, despite the fact that most of the bitching & complaining I've seen thus far appears to be motivated NOT in altruism of the sake of benefitting the spanish, but in soothing the gaping and seemingly fatal wounds experienced by the anglophones.
Y'all are beginning to sound like the French.
Ever seen a Frenchman in Paris respond to an American on vacation who doesn't speak French? ;D
Segregation in America is nothing new. It doesn't have to be that way, ...and learning an additional language isn't going to lead to segregation. If anything, it'll open up & desegregate the US. Those who refuse to learn will fall behind
I understand your frustration, ...but please, ...let's not lose our heads over this.
ps: Kill or be Killed! :P
-
typically tourist don't get mad if you don't know their language. ;D
Yeah it is crazy, i went into a full on rant in the car when he told me this....lol

Jag... stop this crazy talk.
If a country is founded on a specific language, then you speak it.
The United States of America, as a sovereign nation was founded on English.
The Declaration of Independence, The constitution, and all of the US's original documents were written in English... That's all there is to it.
There is NOTHING wrong with learning another language... NOTHING, but the language of the United States of America, should be English... End of story.
If you take a job with a company in ANY other country, or you do business with ANY other country, you learn the language of that country... That's the rules.
If I moved to another country, I would learn the language of that country end of story... and I would be EXTREMELY pissed off at MYSELF if I couldn't speak the language, I would not be upset with an employee who doesn't speak mine.
The United States of America was founded in English.
If anyone disagrees... please state HOW you disagree... on what basis you feel it was not and how you feel that English is not the native language of the country.
I'm all ears.

Tu, you and I are actually in agreement, I see nothing wrong with anything you've posted so far,
...however, let me ask you this... if you were to move to a foreign country, and refuse to learn how to speak the language, how far would you get? What would your options look like?
Are you saying people's demands that others speak the English language are out of an overwhelming concern for them, ...or do you suppose it has more to do with the discomfort they feel at hearing others speak in a language that they themselves do not understand or perhaps feel inadequate with? I personally think it has more to do with the latter than the former.
I remember when I was in highschool, we used to hang out with an older crowd of italian guys who would often speak amongst themselves in Italian when they didn't want us to know what they were saying. my girlfriends and I had a similar language call it pig latin that we'd speak in that they couldn't understand. you should have seen these guys blow a gasket every time we used it. They'd scream 'English. Speak in English' They'd get incensed that we would speak in pig latin right in front of them, but had no problems speaking Italian in front of us.
ps: Not everyone who moves to a foreign country or takes a job in a foreign country learns the language.
My brother-in-laws sister is a bank president in the Czech republic, but doesn't speak Czech.
All her subordinates speak English, ...but I hear what you're saying.
I just think it's funny to see people get all bent out of shape and angry because someone doesn't speak English.
And they get all red-in-the-face and start demanding legislation to force them to speak English.
What's the next step? Cutting out their tongues if they utter a word in Spanish? ::)
ps: As an aside, how do we really know that the Spanish speaking family was pissed off at Ozmo's son's inability to speak spanish? How does his son know that? He clearly couldn't even understand them. Are we to go on the word of his co-worker? How do we know this kid doesn't harbour a grudge or slightly resent Ozmo jr? Does it at all make any logical sense that this family would be angry at a kid who doesn't speak spanish. Perhaps his bi-lingual co-worker may have a reason to resent him or feel some degree of hostility towards him... afterall, he has to take the orders of those in his lineup, ...and apparently the orders in OzmO's son's lineup as well, cause OzmO jr doesn't spaek spanish. This kid is doing twice the work probably for he same pay. If anything, this kid has a reason to be annoyed. Maybe he in his own way was telling Ozmo's kid to learn spanish? (http://www.jaguarenterprises.net/images/em/shrug.gif)

It doesn't matter. Enlighten me Jag. Why is it that when the millions of Europeans were immigrating here they had no problem learning English AND retaining their native languages? They used their language when around people who spoke it and used English when they weren't. Why should a country that's main language is English be forced to cater to people who speak Spanish and do not want to learn English? I understand that you flock to defend them and justify it as you minorities stick together, but it's pretty foolish to expect that.
Get with the program or get the fuck out. Why should the people who speak the primary language of a country go out of their way to cater to those who don't? Because you think they should know another language? Why can't the hispanics learn another language? Why does it have to the be English speaking people? You know, the people speaking the primary language of this country. ::)
Your analogy about the bank president in Czech is bullshit to boot. The universal business language in this world is English.
Your self-righteous bullshit is hilarious. STFU.
Ozmo's son should've told them to speak English or get out of line.
-
Why should the people who speak the primary language of a country go out of their way to cater to those who don't? Because you think they should know another language? ::)
Suppose you tell me. I'm not making an argument that people go out of their way to cater to those who don't.
Your analogy about the bank president in Czech is bullshit to boot. The universal business language in this world is English.
It's not bullshit. I know the woman and she does not speak Czech.
ps: I love the irony there. Let me know when you pick up on it if it hasn't flown over your head like most things.
-
No it's not, ...but it is too much to ask someone else to speak YOUR language while displaying an unwillingness to speak or learn HIS.
I'm not asking him to speak MY language. I'm asking them to speak the COUNTRY'S language.
(cheesy comparison trying to make it about selfishness ::))
The father spoke Italian fluently, as well as English fluently, ...his challenge was his French.
Oh i get it. Too bad Canada has a identity crisis.
Ya the codes were introduced after a separatist revolution in Quebec demanded everything had to be in French.
I'm talking about signs, business licenses, advertising regulations and guidelines etc... What about those? why can't he just do what ever he wants? It's his business?
Why aren't people raising hell about that? I'll tell you why...becuase those regulations standardize things and make commerce run smoother and protect the consumer and business person.
Get it now?
Funds spent on duplicate forms are a mere pittance and do not even begin to scratch the scratch on the scratch of the tip of that colossal iceberg called the military spending fiasco in Iraq. Divert a bit of those funds and you'd probably be able to hire private tutors for every single one of them, ...one who'd pour them a beer or a shot or two of tequila while giving them a backrub and a foot massage! Grin
In a few short years it will be all gone, becuase we won't let anyone into the country who can't speak passable english.
Not for long it isn't.
Look up the the 'Security & Prosperity Partnership' (SPP) Y'all will be speaking Spanish in no time, possibly French too
Ahh no. English replaced? not in our lifetime.
And what ever stupid shit you want me to look up won't change the language of the country from English to something else.
Grin
none of what you said matters.
They shouldn't have been allowed to immigrate if they didn't speak the language.
come one come all! I love ya. just speak passable English and I'll love you long time!
When you are born in America you are a citizen period. by birth right. What's written on Ellis Island is for people who are immigrating.
seriously Jag, sometimes your arguments are really stupid.
Y'all are beginning to sound like the French.
Ever seen a Frenchman in Paris respond to an American on vacation who doesn't speak French?
We are not talking about VACATIONING ARE WE? another stupid try at an argument.
If i MOVED to France i would learn the language. Otherwise i get what i deserve.
Learn English or be killed!
;D
-
Of course he agreed. the kid would have to learn spanish otherwise. ;D
He took spanish by choice last the 2 years in school. Got a B+ and a A-.
Feel free to try again Jag. ;D

What? That to be successful in the global market place one needs to know English? Has nothing to do with the fact that the hispanics make ZERO effort to learn English, twat.
Good job avoiding the rest of my post. Of course you did, because you can't refute and have nothing to work with. Great job. ::)
You're just reaching here like the stupid twat minority that you are. Always got to side with the "underprivileged," regardless of whether their actions are justified or not.
-
Your Liberal perspective is getting smacked around pretty bad here JAG.
We must all be English speaking fascist. ;D
-
It cracks me up. I should be the one to learn another language to accommodate a group of people who came here and expect everyone to hand everything to them? I function fine in American society. I have no language barriers. Why should I be the one to go out of my way to speak a language that has no purpose here? So I can accommodate a group of people who don't want to learn the language that's been spoken in this country since its inception? If I want to learn another language, I'll do it on my own accord. Not because some arrogant twat doesn't want to speak English in the USA.
-
As for business.
It's a business prerogatived in the interest of attracting Spanish speaking customers to has bilingual employees and cater to spanish only speaking people. nothing wrong with that. BECAUSE IT'S THEIR capitalistic CHOICE!
;D
-
Tu, you and I are actually in agreement, I see nothing wrong with anything you've posted so far,
...however, let me ask you this... if you were to move to a foreign country, and refuse to learn how to speak the language, how far would you get? What would your options look like?
While there are some countries I could probably skate by in without learning the language, my own pride wouldn't let me... I don't want anyone catering to ME... That's just wrong.
If we are in agreement then I don't understand what you are saying exactly.
The guy should have learned English right? He was in The United States of America where the native language is in fact, English yes?

Except in this particular case, it had nothing to do with licenses, signage, advertising etc. it had to do with him being behind the counter and not being fluent in French.
In a few short years it will be all gone, becuase we won't let anyone into the country who can't speak passable english.
You won't let anyone into the country who can't speak passable english? {lolollololoz} like you can control that?
oh please... STOP! my sides are aching.
Ahh no. English replaced? not in our lifetime.
you absolutely surrrrrre about that? :P
And what ever stupid shit you want me to look up won't change the language of the country from English to something else.
No, ...but the thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of Mexicans pouring into your country will. :o
Oh look, there goes another one... just sneaked in, ...and there's another... quick, he just darted under your bed.
none of what you said matters.
They shouldn't have been allowed to immigrate if they didn't speak the language.
Don't you get it? America's economy would collapse without them. The point is they WERE allowed to immigrate without speaking the language, and your government... the bush government doesn't care one bit. It's exactly the way they want it, otherwise they would have done something about it. And if you think it's bad now, ...wait until a few thousand Mexican soldiers return from afghanistan with citizenship in their hands ready to set up home in your little community. And when you try to tell one of them to speak English, he'll say "¡CÓJALE! Soy un veterano de guerra de Estados Unidos que sirvió este país en Afganistán e I' ¡el ll habla lo que quiere la cogida yo!"
Loose translation:
'FVCK YOU! I'm a United States war veteran who served this country in Afghanistan, and I'll speak whatever the fvck I want!"
come one come all! I love ya. just speak passable English and I'll love you long time!
{giggle} oh you so horny ;D
When you are born in America you are a citizen period. by birth right. What's written on Ellis Island is for people who are immigrating.
And that's what alot of those spanish speakers are... new Americans who have immigrated to the USA.
seriously Jag, sometimes your arguments are really stupid.

how do you know the family you got so righteously pissed off over weren't on vacation? :D

Would you even put mayonnaise on your french fries too? You're nothing but an appeaser!

Yep! Actually I prefer the term Yankeecentic imperialists, ...but english speaking fascists is fine for now. ;D

;D
Absolutely! it's a choice! What cracks me up tho is when I see these english ONLY speakers who have chosen NOT to speak another language get absolutely blue in the face and all bent out of shape because someone else has exercised their choice NOT to learn another language.
While there are some countries I could probably skate by in without learning the language, my own pride wouldn't let me... I don't want anyone catering to ME... That's just wrong.
Well then let me suggest they weren't doing it right. ;D
If we are in agreement then I don't understand what you are saying exactly.
The guy should have learned English right? He was in The United States of America where the native language is in fact, English yes?
What I'm saying is that any smart forward thinking person would choose to learn the predominate languages of a country. It's a logical progression for anyone who wants to get ahead on this continent, ...however, just as you have the choice NOT to learn Spanish. S/he too also has the choice NOT to learn English.

You oughtta be kicked out of the US and have your citizenship revoked! :o
This is America, ...and in this country we eat freedom fries with ketchup!

how do you know the family you got so righteously pissed off over weren't on vacation? Cheesy
I wouldn't get mad if i went to Mexico, which i do at least once every 2 years or so, and they didn't speak English some place.
so i learn a few words. And most speak english any way becuase they want my money. But i don;t get mad if someone doesn't.

heheheheh.
Give me 18 months to change my ways and i'll do it only in the privacy of my own home with the blinds shut from then on!

I don't have any problems with Mexicans being here. What I hate is their attitude. They think this is their land... hahaha... ok, I'll listen to the American Indians bitch on that but where do fucking Mexicans get off saying places like Colorado is part of Aztlan ::) That's the attitude they have so that is part of the basis for why they expect you to speak Spanish. I've said it before, I would love to learn Spanish. It would be great if we were a more linguistic Nation. But having these fuckers come in with this attitude and thinking, fuck them.
-

I understand... but shouldn't business establishments then have the choice to not service those that do not learn English? (within the United States of course).

Jag's arguments are that of a minority appeasing black moslem.
She is against everything successful, even the English language - which one day EVERYONE will speak.

I'd rather speak German... It sounds more badass.
-
Never going to happen mate (I do agree it sounds bad "arse" 8)), everyone also speaks English in Germany. In the Nederlands they also speak English.
People from Scandinavian countries also, but these fuckers are exceptional, normally knowing more than the usual "Native + English" combo.
Even in deep Russia where I was last (Samara) people have some grasp of English, the youngsters being very good. Knowing German also seems to be popular in Russia.

you're right, I'll never get around to fully speaking another language... such a loser I am :(
-
We should be a bi-lingual nation. Many other countries are, and I don't see a problem with it. Personally, I would, as I can only carry a very basic conversation in Spanish(I can read it decently enough, though). I"m positive a lot of older people would as well. I don't see what the problem is in teaching our kids to be completely fluent in both the English and Spanish languages. The brain doesn't "fill up" with knowledge, ye know.
-
Why not Chinese then, or an Indian dialect? Surely THOSE would be beneficial considering the how future business world will be linguistically?
Or do you give in to the whims of invading immigrants with no desire to learn English?
-
Why not Chinese then,
Jesus, might as well ask us to learn Forubiatonian from the planet Boopoousuckme. >:( I'll go for Spanish an German, but fuck you if you think I'm leaning Alienanese.
-

I'm simply talking about the proximity of the two nations. I'd say the same thing about learning and speaking French for sections of the US that hug close to Quebec. Hell, you should know, Europeans speak several languages. If they can do it, why can't we?
I don't give in to any whims by invading immigrants. In fact, I don't even blame them. I blame institutions and government entities that offer everything in Spanish so that someone who doesn't speak English can receive and utilize all services without having to resort to learning English.
I just think that making bilingual education in schools be mandatory is easier achieved and can make a workable solution rather than trying to force millions to learn English(irregardless of age, education, level, etc..) and otherwise denying them services. The private entities wouldn't cave in anyways, as someone who spoke solely Spanish would still get those services anyways.
Sometimes the solution is one that we don't like or agree with.
-

Exactly. Being a bilingual nation is one thing, but learning Spanish specifically because a group of people don't want to is another. If I want to learn another language, I'll pick one I like and go from there. Not because I need to appease a group of people who don't want to learn the primary language in this country. And besides, if I was going to learn a language like that, it would be Portuguese considering Brazil is part of RIBC, which are the four economies with the most potential for growth.
-
Well, tactically, learning Chinese / Indian Sanskrit would be more beneficial in the global economy.
I guess it's up to you guys to decide between you how to prioritise.

Mandarin and Cantonese are two of the most awful sounding dialects out there. Although it might not be as beneficial, I'd rather learn Japanese.
Either way, I would pick and not base it on the fact that it might help some people who don't want to learn English in the USA function better. ::)

I'm not actually serious. I'm just trying to provide a counter to the pro-Spanish sentiment, which is based on lazy invading immigrants.

it's NOT about being bi-lingual. It's about a group of people not willing to learn the language of the COUNTRY they live in.

No we shouldn't because this country was not founded by Spanish speaking people and you cannot change that. All we have is an overload of foreign invaders trying to change OUR country. Fuck that. Mine the border and shoot to kill. Make all forms and signs in English and let the problem fix itself. "Sorry, no hablo...come back when you speak English. Next!"

Exactly. If people stop serving hispanics and only put out English forms and what not, they would shape up real fast.

I find it inherently rude to live somewhere and not speak the language - plus why would you not want to? First thing I did upon moving to an english speaking island was to slave on the skills. All my family did. In my native island english isn't the language, and we have english speaking folks come to work as bartenders, dive instructors etc for years on end....and never even like muster up basic skills in the language?
People do it everywhere, a strange thing, and very, very rude imo. I even cringe at crappy english when folks have lived somewhere for years. After 20 years, you mean to tell me you can't bust decent language skills out?
-
Was in the mall today and I would say that at least 25% of the people I walked by weren't speaking English. PANTALONES!!!!! Then again, was a Tuesday morning and they don't have anything better to do.
