NEW YORK: California has become the first US state to ban use of trans fats, long linked to health problems and obesity, in restaurants and bakeries.
Under a new bill signed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger yesterday, the restaurants are required to phase out the use of trans fats and excise them completely by 2010 and in all retail baked goods by 2011. Packaged food will be exempt.
Earlier, New York City had banned their use from July 1 this year. Some other cities, including Philadelphia, have also made similar laws.
But California will be the first to ban their use in more than 80,000 restaurants and bakeries across the State. Those who violate the law would be fined USD 25 for first violation and it would progressive increase for subsequent violations rising to USD 1000.
The ban on synthetic fat comes in the wake of intensive movement launched by health professionals and consumer advocates who blame them for heart and other diseases.
"I think the potential here is real for a far greater understanding of the harms of trans fats, and to encourage more states to do the same," Dr Clyde Yancy, incoming president of the American Heart Association was quoted in a media report as saying.
Restaurant and bakery operators prefer trans fats as they are inexpensive. Trans fats are prepared by passing hydrogen into liquid oil at high temperature to produce what is called partially hydrogenated product.

Why does the government care? I'll tell you why.
Since the United States went bankrupt in 1933 and officially surrendering all Gold to the Federal Reserve, the only backing to our currency is the Sweat Equity in every United States Citizen. You are Human Capital and your sweat equity is extracted and spent by the powers that be.
Stay healthy people and keep paying that income tax.

I don't like this. They should leave it to the marketplace to decide whether or not to sell unhealthy food.

they did leave it to the market place.
unhealthy food won.

Then that's the way it ought to be. What are they going to do next, outlaw red meat?

I see the ban as something good. They could never EVER ban red meat in America.
Not enough vegans....even in California!

Don't have to be a vegan to not eat red meat.
I think the ban will have a positive impact on the health of Californians, but so would forcing everyone to eat more grains, nuts, and fruit. So would banning pork. But that's not the government's job. If people want to eat unhealthy food and there are businesses who want to sell it, then the government needs to stay out of the way. I could see promoting or discouraging, but banning foods like that is a bit much.

yea, no shit... good post. If the companies could get more shelf life/profit by putting Cadmium in your food, they would if there were not a law againt doing it. Wake up BB. When you have something that only has negatives and no positives other than for a company's profit, it's fucking ok to pass a law and ban the shit. Like you're so fond of pointing out president, this is nothing new. There are no positives for consumtion of transfats only negatives.

I'm quite awake, although tired as heck after playing softball for three hours. The positives are people like to eat it. If no one liked how food tasted with trans fats they wouldn't buy it.
So would you favor a law banning cigarettes too? That's something that "only has negatives and no positives other than for a company's profit."
Why don't we just start coming up with a list of all those "bad" things that people like, but that are harmful, and let the government ban those things too?

wow ::) I mean really, wow... You think it's about taste. Your cig analogy sucks. It's really easy to go to the store and choose to buy cigarettes or not. Not so easy to avoid transfats. At one point it got to where it was almost in everything and it was not until NY banned it that we started to see a movement from it so what you critise California for doing is what NY did and got the ball started with. And if the analogy were correct, we would be talking about a harmful substance added by the companies to cigarettes for longer shelf life--yes I would be for banning that. We're not talking about banning food are we ::) Really, it's pathetic. You say let the market decide... Shit when it gets to the point where it was in everything, what kind of decision are you talking about, either buy the shit or start your own farm/ranch lol. Then I also guess you're just fucked if you're not well off too ::) The poor can decide to not smoke, not so easy for them to only buy primo product from Whole Foods ::)
-
Cocaine, heroin, etc., etc.
the government should stay out of that too. If people knowingly choose something that's bad for them, then they have to pay the price. It's not the governments responsibility to protect us from our selves.
right?

Of course it's easy to avoid foods at restaurants that have trans fats. Stop eating at restaurants that use them. How hard is that? I think the market should decide. Not big brother. Dangerous precedent. If you want to talk about what is really killing us in this country, read The China Study. It's heart disease and cancer that kill most of us in this country and most of this is diet related . . . and it ain't fruits and veggies causing problems. Following this line of thinking, we should be putting the beef/chicken, etc. industry out of business. ::)
And it's not as easy as not buying cigarettes. Tobacco companies have to hook kids to stay in business. Once they do so, nicotine is as or more addictive than things like heroin.
-

Depends. I'm not a libertarian, so I don't have problem with some regulation (seatbelts, etc.). But we’re talking about restaurants using legal food products. Not the government's role. Maybe they should ban cheese too.

Oh fuck, you are joking... Really, in all my life I've never seen a restaurant that said, "We use transfats" Correct that bullshit before we move one ::) Infact!!! places like KFC and McDonnalds didn't start advertising they stopped UNTIL NY BANNED IT! Had NY not done so, there would have been none of that. So back to how the fuck would you know?
-
I gotta admit this is a new one on me. I shouldn't be surprised that transfats still exist in America.
Just looking at the size of the average American should have been evidence enough. Can't believe I missed that.
Transfats have been banned here for quite a while, as well as over in Germany.

Ask. I've heard restaurants say they don't use them, like McDonalds, etc. If someone is concerned about it they should do their own research. I'm sure you could find out by simply calling them. Or you can just rely on the government to go around the country banning them at all restaurants. Next up: chitlins. ::)

I suppose that's why McD's got it's pants sued off them when they advertised their french fries as suitable for vegans and it was discovered they were frying them in lard. Then there was the coconut oils... yada yada yada.

Precisely why companies have an incentive to tell the truth.
Just to clarify, McDonallds was sued for not informing all consumers about backing off a promise to phase out trans fats. They were later sued when they disclosed that their fries contain ingredients derived from wheat and dairy.

so you would rather wait for a company to be honest, than have something harmful banned outright?
that makes no sense.
-

I would rather a company be held accountable for lying, which serves as a deterrent to others in business. Makes sense to me.
I'd also rather have the government stop short of telling restaurants what kinds of food to serve. That also makes sense to me.

LOL.... I guess you didn't read my post... For you to come at me with McDonalds in reply to my post that uses McConalds to tell you what has happened and why pretty much shows it... WTF is it with people not reading my shit... Am I that fucking boring :-\
-
I don't know about you guys but I cook most of my own food using basic ingredients
trans fats are mostly used in packaged food to increase shelf life and can easily be avoided if it's disclosed on the package
people should educate themselves and the govt should stop wasting my $$$ regulating this shit
oh yeah - drugs should be legal too
all drugs
educate and let people make their own decision and only spend my tax $$$ enforcing real crimes
-
and how fucking retarded... bb, the fucking fat slob who doesn't give a shit about their health, fine to go eat anywhere. You're idea is the other guy who cares about what he eats has to call corporate before going out to eat ::) And for fucking what, to find out if they're putting poison in the food ::)
-
Yes, how ridiculous. You have to actually ask what they're putting in your food. Oh Lord. How onerous. ::) I mean, I don't eat meat and I NEVER ask them what they're putting in my food when I eat out. It's just too hard. I just eat whatever the heck they put in front of me. ::)
Next up: hot dogs. ::)

I don't know how basic you think your basic ingredients are but unless you're growing your own shit and raising your own livestock, the same logic applied with this argument can apply to you and your basic ingredients. If it were not for fucking regulations, your shit would be laced with way more poisonous crap than it is now. Corporate profits 101, you should take it. I for one think it's a good thing to spend tax dollars on. Can't imagine someone with kids who wouldn't give a shit.

I'm not agaist "regulations" per se - I just don't see how CA can regulate an ingredient that is not illegal. I also don't agree with rent control and a lot of other stuff that goes along the lines of restricting trade in that particular way.
the same goes with drugs of all kinds
my meals today were typical but very basic stuff: protein drinks (Beverly protein powder, yogurt, bananas, honey, water) and meals with ground turkey or ground buffalo mixed with steamed green cauliflower, brown rice ,olive oil, salt/pepper
no trans fats

I just miss the day you could go out and get a good burger and fries without worring about the poison in it that should be illegal. We clearly live in a time where the corporations make the rules. Here's a case where so much shit against transfats built up and the corprations still had their way, I'm sure bought. If we're to this point, it's no doubt because of that. Someone had to call BS. Thank god NY and CA had the balls to stand up where the system failed.

Yes. Something so simple is so hard to find.
How often are foods tested for trans fats after the ban?
-
what are we saying here. Yes, the crap is poison but if you don't like it, it's your duty to educate yourself and eat around it? Like I said before, there was no signs advertising before NY took the first step. I'm sorry, but when something is 100% bad, I don't have a problem with it being regulated. That's the kind of shit I expect tax dollars to be spent on. I don't think anyone can show a plus for transfats beyond corporate profits. You have to admit, we live in an era where the corporations are writing the rules. Today, you'd have a hard time getting DDT banned. So where the system is failing, you're having a few states say fuck that. Well fucking good for them. I don't see in these cases where there is an abuse. I see where they are correcting a failure.

dude if that's all you've got to worry about then praise allah and jesus
you don't have to eat trans fats or anything else you don't want to eat
you can easily construct a diet of basic foods and there are a lot of hippies and liberal types who will sell you really good food
btw - you also don't have to smoke cigarettes, or pot, crack, meth or whatever else people are smoking these days
but if you want to do any of those things I really don't care
-
Yes. Something so simple is so hard to find. Unless you make it at home. Who wants to make it at home all the time.
How often are foods tested for trans fats after the ban?
I don't know but they must have worried about it because it was not until NY banned it that you started to see all the companies advertise "no trans fats" I assume it's because it's such a big market that they can't lose it and they can't make two separate products so they take it and run with it as a positive. After NY did that, you started seeing all these banners, "No more trans fats" Word of caution, everything has been so deregulated to the max that it's easy to go in and pick up a box of cereal or whatever that says it has no trans fats and look at the label and see that it actually does. I kid you not. I guess they figure who's going to bust them and true, when was the last time any of these guys got their asses fined off for something like that. Probably doesn't happen much. A few years back I watched some investigative program. They were talking about something like 30 people dying a year from eating cerial and dried fruit. There was a preservative they were using which is actually illegal but they don't give a shit because it's not enforced. apparently some people have a very harsh reaction to it but the number is small enough they don't care and nobody comes around to pass out the fines for using it.
-

gotta disagree. This is not a daily option for everyone. Again, like I said before, not everyone has the budget to get all their stuff from whole foods and you are incredibly naive if you think the basic ingredients you're getting from the local store are not subject to some of the same issues, maybe not transfats but something else that should not be there. Your rice, your grains and especially the meat you buy!!! Are you actually spending 8 bucks a pound for your chicken? You said you're not against regulations... well if you don't see that regulations and that whole business has failed miserably... And would we even be here if it wasn't failing? Hell no... They would have said long ago that this this isn't cool and set regulation. NY and CA are in this spot because of the failure. It's pretty fucked up to say it's your own fault for not being aware of the poison you just purchased and ate.
-
dude - are you nuts?
my food is fine and if I had to write a list about the stuff I'm worried about I can promise you that tran-fats would not even be on the list
check out what's going on in my state: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/07/23/BAFJ11UH46.DTL&tsp=1

are you still referring to trans fats?
aren't they mostly linked to cholesterol and coronary artery disease?
if you give me their names/numbers I'll give them a call

ok I went back and re-read your scattered rant. Look, I'm all for getting chemicals and other crap out of food but I also think people should take personal responsibility with their health and diet. Also, the government can make all the regulations they want but if there is no enforcement (which is a problem from local all the way up to the Federal government) then it's really pointless.
-
I still think it's a good idea. At the very least they should force restaurants to notify the patrons they use trans-fat.

I like that better.
