good point.  I would recommend simple lat pulldowns or a pullup assist machine to get you started.  Reduce the weight assisting over time, have solid nutrition, and cardio cardio cardio.  You can also try laying down pullups on a smith machine where you sit at and incline and pull your chest to the bar.

How much bodyfat do you have, BlueDevil?

At 285 I can do 12 strict pullups. Being heavy should not prevent you from doing normal pullups. (I don't have megatons of bodyfat, though, so maybe we are in different boats...)

about 18 %

not having exercised in a while is the biggest problem i guess

lol

I never said I had "low bodyfat".  I said I don't have "megatons" of bodyfat.

I'm 285-287 at 5'10 with bodyfat around 20%. I look like a powerlifter, not a bodybuilder.

Do you think 12 reps at that bodyweight is really that impressive?

I've been training for a long time and I am naturally strong when it comes to pullups.

I'm nothing special.   ;)

Plenty of people on the board with much better physiques.

same old bullshit generic answer, "i'm nothing special, there are 67 guys in my gym alone who bench 600 for 8 and do 200 pullups weighing 360 pounds", just post the video already. ::)

Hard to believe you can't do a single chin at 18% bf.  Just start training with pulldowns, assist machine if available, and negatives like the guys already said.  You'll get 3 or 4 in not much more than a couple weeks I bet, then you're on your way.

Apparently (compared to you) I am something special.

I don't view myself as a "beast" or super strong (especially when posting on a board full of lifters) but yes, I am bigger than the average guy.

Not everyone is 165 pounds, you know.  :P

Honestly, I'd just up the weight on barbell rows, high pulls, dumbbell rows, etc.... and keep practicing trying to get a real chin/pull-up till it happens.

I look at all the old lifters from the golden age of the sport(pl/ol) that where able to chin their asses off, and it's sad that today's lifters have to resort to such things as "fat man pull-ups".

If you have any sort of pulling power, you should be able to at-least knock out a set of body weight pull-ups.

No offense to the original poster, just some thoughts:).

I think he's fucking around.  You'd have to be 35-40%bf to be unable to do a single chin or pull up.

At 420 I could not even hold my bodyweight, so I was really surprised. I use to love these back in the 97 when I dropped off a ton of weight so now I'm back to doing them again.
