Is this true, it s what a sprinter at the gym told me
-
WOW!
-
It is most likely true, although the "squats" would be partial (ie 1/4 to 1/2) squats at the most, and no full squats such as what a weightlifter would do.

Speed starts in the gym.

He could have been doing it when he was gearing. He was huge when he was doing THG. Quads were very big.

Not 600# squats big...315# for a single- ON A GOOD DAY.

I was talking to a guy in my gym one time, said Mary Peters (1960s Olympic Pentathelete) squatted 600lbs drug free ::)
-
I've seen plenty of guys in the gym ' squatting ' 4 plates on each side if you can a ROM about 6" hell its rare to see anyone squatting in the gym anymore never mind going ass to the ground , you wont have to wait for the squatrack , the hammer strength bench press on the other hand
-
to be fair to him was prob around 500lbs. I would believe this.
I seen jon drummond, John Capel and ato boldon etc on a documentary a few years back moing some big big weight. Lots of cleans squats jerks etc
-
I come from gym where its mainly track and field athletes, powerlifters, and weightlifters. So we get to mix with the athletes quite a lot.
For top male sprinters, its common to see them do partial squats in the range of 120-160kg. Some do go a lot heavier. I have actually even seem females frequently using such a weight. I heard FloJo was using up to a max of 300kg during the off-season, so clearly Dwain could do this (or more).
Now for the field guys, especially hammer and shot-put, we are talking 300kg+ easily for squats deadlifts at 250-300kg, cleans with 160-220kg, and shrugs at 200-250 kgs.

hahahhaa, are you honestly telling us that Florence Griffith Joyner was squatting 660 pounds? please tell me you're joking. ::)
-
This thread is embarrassing. The dude did NOT squat 600 pounds. Not to any appreciable depth, at least. And to suggest the female did over 600 is so beyond asinine it's incomrehensible.
It's like those dudes who put three 45s on the Smith machine and say it's 315. Uh, no. Beyond the bar being counterbalanced so it's actually only about 15 pounds as opposed to 45, the degree of difficulty to perform with the weight is hugely decreased, as well.
I see cats load a bar with 300-plus and put it on their backs all the damn time. Doesn't mean they actually perform anything remotely resembling a legitimate squat.
Ben Johnson used to train periodically at gyms I frequented. He was a "heavy" squatter, too. But again, his reps were WAY high. Parallel? Hell, not even close to being half squats. No disrespect to him, either. Ben was a freak sprinter, no question. But let's be real here, can we?

hahahahahaa, FloJo squatting 660 pounds, i've heard it all now. ;D

No photoshopping ther stud, maybe you should come out to your girlfriend before she catches you with the hairy bear in the trailer at the end of the park.

Sprinter = All drugs, just as much as bodybuilders.
Also if it's not on video or I didn't see it with my own peepers, it didn't happen.

Are you really that ignorant?

He used to train with Greg Anderson at World gym in Burlingame. Saw him doing 500 to about paralell for a couple reps.
-
I've heard people say that no-one could run 100m sub 10s if they weren't using some sort of chemical enhancement. Is this true?

Most likely.

Most likely.
Thought so. So basically the "drug-free" athletes at the Olympics are the shitty ones or those that haven't been caught...
-

Interesting Fact: No white man has ever ran the 100m in under 10 seconds.
-

Hahahaha, As if sprinters use anywhere near the amount of drugs "Professional" Bodybuilders do....

Is it also true that every one of the last 5/6 WR 100m holders have failed drug tests at some point? Though the current holder is clean for now. Someone told me this as well. I couldn't be bothered to go and look if it's true

Not exactly true but a lot have, Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell as far as I'm aware have not failed a drug test yet............
-
The fact is that Dwain Chambers in his prime could def. squat 600 for one good rep to paralell.

Parallel is easy though
-
Haha - there is some quality bollocks in this thread - there is no way in hell Dwain Chambers can squat 600lbs even to parallel and there would be absolutely no point in him doing partials for sprint training. And as for FloJo, don't make me laugh.

I used to go to the gym he trained at in Burlingame C.A. before the whole BALCO thing blew up. I am telling you he could def. squat that much. I saw him do 500 for 5 reps with no belt or knee wraps. They were about paralell.

There are runners and jumpers in my gym that partial squat because, according to them, "A deep-squat isn't functional for us". Utter bull

It actually makes sense. You dont squat ass to calves to jump, do you?

Long jump?

, you wont have to wait for the squatrack , the hammer strength bench press on the other hand
I have to wait for the squatrack, fucking assclowns curling in it.

Exactly - if anything, a full rep squat would be more beneficial because you're driving your thighs through the weakest portion of the rep range, hence making them stronger and the movement more expolsive - something that is paramount in sprinting.
-

I ask them to leave, politely mind.

Also, aren't your glutes hugely important in sprinting and speedwork? Most sprinters have big asses. I've found getting out of the hole at the bottom of a squat is really dependent on glutes
-
Long jump?
Yes.
-
Yes.
Why would it not be beneficial to squat deep?

They do other excercises besides squats that are more specific to their sport.
-
It worked for Dwain Chambers, I guess.
-

But if they are going to bother squatting why don't they squat deep and get more from the time they invest?
-
If you are saying deep like ass to calves deep, then the problem is the strain on the knees. I do olympic lifting, so I squat like that as it is specific to my sport. A paralell squat with the knees forced out is much safer for your knees, therefore a sprinter would probably want to do those.
-
In a vertical jump to reach max height you only need to go 1/4 down.
Sprinters know how to train so they would train how they know best. If that means half squats so be it. I am sure in the last 50years of sprinting somone has tried ass to grass squats and must be a reason they dont do them.
Maybe i am wrong but sprinting is a powerful drive at the start...get as fast as possible rising slowly...then speed indurance. Look at sprinting in the last stages of the race stariaght back...all speed endurance.
I dont know if this is true but is sprinting now more hip strength than quad strength?????
-
i dont know why people have a problem with this,, he's a top % athlete, pure explosive power, made up the same way as the top % olympic lifters.... average gym bums can squat over 4 plates, so why the big debate?

Lol, I was going to post this about two hours ago and thought 'fuck it'. Well said.

maybe there's not a lot of juicers

This was one of the mastest men ever in teh world and people find it hard to believe.
-
There is no "average" gym in America where people are squatting 405 legitimately ::) Half the people squatting that type of weight, don't even do real squats.
-

one of the fastest, not necessarily one of the strongest
-
Power is speed/distance
-
Hangclean is correct. They do much more than just squats. Lots of unilateral, hip flexor and hip rotator workn a ton of plyos and a ton of posterior chain work. Remember, athletes dont run on two legs.
-
not in my gym
You have world class athletes in your gym!? You know, the gifted of the gifted!? Didn't think so. ;)
-
hahahahahaa, FloJo squatting 660 pounds, i've heard it all now. ;D
