California is fucked! $15 billion recordr budget deficits, crazy wildfires and overdue for a major earthquake! I'd rather put up with tornados and blizzards in Colorado than fucking earthquakes. Not shit you can do in an earthquake.

I'd rather be in an earthquake than a hurricane or torneado...been around these all my life (anyone remember the one in the early 70's...Whittier). Also in the early 90's there was the big one (Northridge) and i was living in San Clemente at the time but had to drive back home (Pasadena area) to clean up both my parents and grandparents home...lots of damage.

One smart friend of mine who studies earthquakes and volcanos in Hawaii says that the Pacific Plate is gonna rise above the earth's crust in the vicinity of Lancaster/Palmdale and create a new mountain mass between LA and the Mojave Desert. At first it will only be a short mountain mass so don't worry too much about it right now, but all the roads to Las Vegas and points east will have to be re-routed. Good stuff to think about.

I don't think they really know, they are extremely if not impossible to predict currently.

blocks of rock are always moving past each other. when the move freely at something like a cm or two a year, you don't notice it. but when it sticks, energy builds up. if it sticks for a long time lots of energy builds up. when it finally breaks all that energy is released at once and you feel an earthquake.

the Pacific plate is moving past the North American plate. where they touch we call the San Andreas fault. the problem for southern California is that there is a bend in the fault right at the San Gabriel mountains. Lots of rock has to work its way west to get around that bend to continue traveling north. that's why soCal has hundreds of little faults besides the really big San Andreas fault. An 8.5 is certainly possible on the San Andreas, but that's well outside the city. The smaller faults will never create anything that big. they break long before they can build up that much energy.

Earthquakes release energy. so after an earthquake there is less energy in the system, so on the one hand a big earthquake makes it just a little less likely that there will be an even bigger one in the very near future. on the other hand, the rock doesn't necessarily break all at once, so an earthquake could release say 10% of its energy and it could be a matter of days or months before the other 90% gets released as an even bigger earthquake.

An earthquake can occur at any time. Statistically, really big earthquakes occur on the southern part of the San Andreas every 150 years or so. We're well overdue. when it does break, a long stretch between Palmdale and Palm Springs will open up like a zipper. If it starts in Palmdale and rips south, most of the energy will be directed away from Los Angeles. But if it starts in Palm Springs and rips north, LA will receive the brunt of it.

One fault (I cannot remember which) north of LA can rupture and send enough force south to liquify the ground under Los Angeles and OC. There are probably a lot of scenarios for the big one.

The ancient Mayans were able to predict them.

A friend of mine in Chino went through it. Luckily no damage though.
He was in the middle of renovations, so thankfully everything was already down off the walls etc.

I've only experienced mild ones where the epicentre is in Pennsylvania, but felt up here in Ontario.

I can't imagine what it must be like to be right in the heart of it.

My cousin was smack dab in the middle of the Pasadena quake of 86.
It scared the living daylights out of her so badly, ...she wasn't ok for months afterwards :o

I was 12, and taking out the garbage prior to the World Series. The entire house was shaking, and I went to hide under my bed then realized 'Doorway!!! That's where they always tell you to hide.'
Good thing too, since while I was standing in the door frame of my closet, I saw my bed jumping up and down about 3' in the air. Meantime, along the windowsill to my right, I watched the wood split and a crack run about 4-5" in length.
