Obama: Republicans take pride in being ignorant
Posted: 07:38 PM ET
From CNN Political Producer Alexander Marquardt
BEREA, Ohio (CNN) – For almost a week, John McCain and his campaign have been mocking Barack Obama’s comments to a voter last week in Missouri when he told her to one way to conserve energy is “making sure your tires are properly inflated.”
On Monday a top McCain advisor passed around tire gauges labeled “Obama’s Energy Plan” to reporters on the Arizona senator’s campaign plane — and the Republican National Committee says more are waiting for the Obama traveling press corps at Tuesday night’s hotel.
Obama shot back at a town hall in Ohio Tuesday afternoon, accusing them of lying about his energy plan and ignoring what experts say would reduce gas consumption between 3 and 4 percent.
“It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant,” Obama told a packed gym. “They think it’s funny that they're making fun of something that is actually true. They need to do their homework.”
“Instead of running ads about Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, they should go talk to some energy experts and actually make a difference,” Obama added.
Both the RNC and McCain’s campaign responded by urging Obama to call for Congress to return from summer recess for a special session to pass an energy package.
“Rather than demanding Americans inflate their tires, Obama should be demanding Congress return to DC to vote on a real energy plan. Obama is wrong: Inflated tires are no substitute for oil drilling and a comprehensive energy plan,” said RNC spokesman Alex Conant.
The race took a sharp turn for the negative last week, as McCain released the ‘Celeb’ ad aimed at Obama, who said the presumptive Republican nominee would try to make him look scary by saying the Illinois senator doesn’t “look like all the presidents on the dollar bills.”
“Our politics has gotten so nasty,” said Obama in Berea. “But not just nasty, also cynical and manipulative, right? Where we say things that we don’t mean.”
“I’m happy to have a battle of words because I’ve got facts on my side. I’ve got truth on my side. I fear no man when I’ve got truth on my side,” he added.

politics aside, they were making fun of Obama's idea to check air pressure.
By the most conservative estimates, it would save 1% of fuel costs.
By the most liberal estimates, 4%.
Why would the republicans mock an idea that would instantly shave at least 1% off all fuel costs nationwide?
-
Obama:
"One way to conserve energy is “making sure your tires are properly inflated.”
RNC:
" Obama is wrong: Inflated tires are no substitute for oil drilling and a comprehensive energy plan,” said RNC spokesman Alex Conant.
See what he did there? Obama listed ONE way we can cut costs, as part of his comprehensive plan. The repub leader twisted that quote to make it seem as if Obama said we should use tire pressure INSTEAD of a comprehensive plan.
That's just dishonest there. Attack Obama for legit things. This isn't one of them.

Talk about an entire article that shows everything that's taken out of context...... ::)

PS: The oil drilling issue is a sucker issue for suckers.
The best sucker is when Paris talks about it.

From what i understand there is no rear entry at the Paris Hilton Hotel.

I'd like to put my junk in her purse. Probably feels good and is full of $. Safer too. Even if that damn poodle is in there and chews it a bit, it would still be better than catching a lifetime of genital warts from her.

The sad part is, the same people who can't see the off drilling thing for what it is will fall for the tire gauge thing just the same.

would you say it's less safe to drill offshore, or drill inwhore?

depends on the whore. there are already 68 million whores to drill on that have been set aside.

McCain's energy plan is more comprehensive and acheivable compared to Obamas.
Most experts that I have heard comment say that some of Obama's goals are unrealistic.
The answer stares us in the face, but its multifactorial: increase nuclear energy (#1), drill offshore & increase domestic supply, explore clean coal technology (we have huge reserves here), increase emissions on all vehicles, figure if solar & wind are cost effective and give incentives, also give incentives and tax breaks to companies that explore reasonable alternative energy sources. As far as speculators, I don't understand that completely, but if there are loopholes, then close them.

He shouldn't call out crap like that? He shouldn't make an issue when his words are taken completely out of context? McCain would and does the same thing.

The best thing in there is nuclear power. Clean coal technology? what for? build nuclear power plants. They are far cleaner than coal and safe.
Drill off shore is as given. Start with the 68 million acres we already have IF the oil companies WANT to.

Drilling on 68 million acres is an issue suckers use. If oil exists they would have drilled it already

You know what you should do?
stop talking out your other end and do some research on it.
Companies are in the process of drilling it.

Of course he should. It's the way he responded. They were making fun of him. He should have had a light hearted, but factual response, instead of acting like someone hurt his feelings.

I think, in principle, you should find it.

At this point with the voters mentality, it's ALL political, making fun of him is just the same as bashing him. If Obama made a few statements regarding McCain's age in fun would it be treated as such? i think not.
If they were just making "fun" which is obvious they are not, it shows poor judgment from his campaign.
-
In that case, it seems you just posted a link to a thread of the same discussion.
No surprise companies are drilling on that land, I have seen some of the derricks, and they are not doing good, in fact the oil companies are losing money even being out in many of the fields.
The fact is your facts are not straight or sensible, the 68 million acres has been surveyed and it's not the promise it was hoped to be.

Please show the link that shows there isn't any oil....
There hasn't been a real push to drill it yet.
Losing money drilling for oil is part of the process in hitting oil and making money.

I'd tell the swamp donkey to sock it before I give her a trunky in the tradesman's entrance and have her lick me yarbles!

Neither of them should make fun of things the other cannot control (age, race, gender, etc.). But on issues? I thought it was kinda funny.
The prez has to have very thick skin. The last two presidents were accused of murder.

In this voter pool? there are millions of voters who think tires is Obama's energy policy. Obama, in prudence, has to say something.

I agree both candidates should respond when their positions are misstated, distorted, etc. It's the manner in which they respond that I'm talking about. There are times when righteous indignation is necessary. This wasn't one of those times IMO. He overreacted.

I disagree... You call a duck a duck.
I thought McCain was all about the "Straight talk".
All of a sudden if someone else talks "straight", they're whining? Interesting perspective.

See my prior responses. I don't have a problem with straight talk. I just would have handled it a bit differently. Someone makes a joke, you make one too, while stating the facts.
What's the man going to do when someone makes a serious accusation?

I could see that being valid if he had some sort of meltdown... Like Cheney calling that guy a motherfvcker. But I see no meltdown there.
Just a straight fact.
Do you consider our energy usage a crisis or at the very least a very important issue to the US today?
-

I'd call this a mini-meltdown: “It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant,” Obama told a packed gym. They made fun of him. He needs to man up already. He should come out swinging when there is a serious allegation on the table, not when someone makes fun of him.
Yes energy usage is an important issue.
You should see what has happened to my electric bill. >:( I have threatened to start fining my kids for leaving ten lights on in the house, along with the TV, music, etc. all at the same time.

...
Then why do these republicans mock a sensible suggestion for conservation and then twist what Obama said into something devoid of sense and meaning?
Seems like small time dirty politics to me.
What does Obama have to "man up" about? Wasn't it the McCain camp that was engaging in restated arguments (lies & hyperbole) re Obama's statement?
Why should Obama man up to such an obvious sandbagging?

It's not even a mini meltdown........when you have a bias against someone (not insinuating a racial bias of course) everything you see them do is tainted.

lol. :) Not even. I have no dog in this race. I'm not biased against Obama. I just don't think he should be president. That has nothing to do with my opinion that he shouldn't have acted like someone insulted his wife. Or has he done that already? :D
-
I'm not biased against Obama.
HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH
says the man who posts numerous blurbs and articles finding fault in everything he does. ;D :D

I think most everyone has realized that Obama takes things personally, and this is just one of the many reasons why he will not enter into a real town hall debate with McCain, because he says things that he later "regrets"
It's not personal Osama...it's just politics
"It will be a very big mistake for them to ever talk badly about my wife" etc etc etc
His biggest word choice is "I"
Hence he takes things personally and responds to criticism like a big baby.

It IS personal... It should be personal to you and to me and to everyone else who pays taxes.
What part of politics doesn't affect you "personally"?

Well . . . maybe because he says and does a lot that I disagree with. When McCain starts talking like a socialist I'll be all over him too. :)

The fact that taking things personally means overriding objective thoughts since emotion overrides the process.
Same with his personal philosophies on socialism.
No it's not personal, it is ran like a business. You have a business you get personal, your a bad business man. Someone complains, takes a deal from under you....you evaluate situatons with a birds eye view.

This isn't just business... Things that will happen will affect every person living in this country.
I disagree with your analogy completely.
If your business goes under, then you're out some money, maybe bankrupt, so what... It's just money.
You fuck up a presidency and people die.
Being able to hold peoples lives in your hands is absolutely "personal".
