Sen. Barack Obama explains why he's running for president to an audience in Elkhart, Ind., yesterday
It's the question every presidential candidate must be prepared to answer, but when it was posed to Barack Obama by a 7-year-old yesterday, the Democratic senator seemed at a loss for words.

Appearing before a packed high school gym in Elkhart, Ind., the young girl asked Obama why he is running for the White House.

"America is, is no longer, uh, what it could be, what it, it once was," Obama said haltingly. "And I say to myself, I don't want that future for my children."

Talk-radio superstar Rush Limbaugh, who featured the clip on his show today, marveled that Obama didn't immediately speak of running because he loves America.

"You're running for president of the U.S., and you run down the country to a 7-year-old?" said an incredulous Limbaugh.

Limbaugh suggested someone should ask Obama to name the period when, in his opinion, America was as it should be.

He did not say 'America's not so great'. What he said was that "America is not what she once was".

It's truthful, and a far better and more diplomatic response than the other candidate is capable of.

He tells 7 yr olds and everyone else that "Washington is broken"

McCain has always maintained "He never loved America"

Based on the policies he offers to America, including another term of bush, I highly doubt he has ever come to love America at all. If he did, he wouldn't be attempting to distract voters, sling so much dirt and campaign so negatively with the assistance of those who should in fact be in jail. He would instead provide a real plan and lead America to where she needs to be.

I see.  You'd prefer the men running for president be dishonest in the name of political correctness?  I'd prefer a straight shooter.

Things were better for our nation under Reagan than under Dubya.  it's a fact.  Does admitting that make you a shitty american?

You're assuming he's being honest all the time? We all know things have been and will be better, but do you think there is such athing as an honest politician?

No, but if you think that is the type of answer a presidential candidate should give to a 7 year old let alone an audience, then I guess America is not honky dory, because this type of man is running for an office that he has NO IDEA OF WHY HE IS RUNNING except to say America is broke, and it's good days are gone, his wife and his self are extremely pessimistic about the U.S. past and present (wifes paper, statements, etc.), and it shows tremendously.

america is in a shitty spot at the moment.

bush borrowed to fight elective wars.  it's a sad period.

911 allwoed to happen, anthrax used to win domestic support for patriot act.  it's a black eye on history.  Admitting that some presidencies are awesome, and some are less-than-awesome is a GOOD THING.

Saying that "things rock!  Nothing is wrong!" isn't the way to go.  Do you want a delusional man being the most powerful man on the planet, or a man with the balls to be honest?  Shit, I remember in march, mccain saying we're not in a recession because "the us is just too great of a country!" or something like that.  So delusional it's sick.

So since your suffering, you want a leader to ackowledge that things suck and the good old days were in the past?

Sad.

That is not what leaders do, they certainly don't draw support for chanting "this country is broke"

A very interesting and relevant point was just adressed. When pray tell was this country "great" according to the left?

I suspect that according to them, the only time this country was "great" was a five year period during the mid- late 1990's under the Clinton administration.

So, for America to return to greatness, we just need to get things back to the way they were in 1998!!!!!!!!!!!!

CHANGE! YES WE CAN! WOOOOOOOOO!!!!

I think every candidate runs under the "change" platform........it's weak and means shit.

Actions speak louder than words, how is he going to change anything? What makes anyone here believe that the president is the most powerful man? He has a lot of people he has to convince before he can do anything. How is he going to pay down the nat. debt? How is he going to bring work into this country? How is he going to get $$$ into the school systems? How is he going to help solve the overpopulation of the prisons? And really, do you think, for one second, that there won't be special privileges set aside for the....ahem, *ghetto* people?

Guess what youandme, ...I agree with you. Leaders don't go about chanting this country is broke.

Obama was asked a direct question by a 7 yr old child, ...Mccain volunteered his response to a nation,
...telling everyone from 7 - 70 that the country is broke. He's hardly a leader, or a maverick, ...just a liar.

John McCain telling everyone the country is broke

Yes, I do. I along with those who have conducted extensive testing on this product, and the hundreds of thousands of users throughout the world.

Please explain how you define "liar"

I define a liar as someone who tells a lie, an untruth.

Very much like those who have never used my gas caps, but want to discredit them because they take pleasure in spreading falsehoods and acting like ignorant children.

kind of like when Mccain suggested a gas tax holiday to help consumers, which was simply smoke and mirrors.
It was Obama who set everyone straight on that issue.

Kind of like when Mccain calls for offshore drilling, ...when in reality it won't provide consumers with any relief... except maybe 5 cents a gallon in maybe 8 or so years, but he puts it out there for ignorant people like you to chew it up.

Kind of like when Mccain ridiculed a suggestion by his opponent claiming it won't help when in fact we all know it does.

Kind of like when bush said there were WMD in Iraq, or when the white house claimed there was a link between AlQ and Iraq

Jaguar you sound like a walking cliche of every stupid cricticism liberals make about America. So according to you, America was great until the Bush Administration took over?  No one in any prior administration lied to the public? The constitution existed for terrorists? Americans didnt start "agressive wars" lolololol?

What exactly is a non agressive war Jaguar? Is that where you declare war but not agressively? Rubber bullets? Water pistols? A boxing match between the heads of state?

So we're voting for their wives now too?

We also have to bring in the hypocrisy of Obama.

Let's bring in the spousal debate

Just weeks after Obama played the race card with Bill Clinton, he did an interview with Barbara Walters and said that "spouses should not be brought into this" yada yada and how it was wrong, and his wife has nothing to do with the campaign.

But to the contrary she went on numerous talk shows for Obama speaking on his plans and platform ideas.

Yet he had smeared Bill Clinton.

He is a hypocrite, that thinks America is not great.

240 what time period is Obama talking about, when "America was great"?

Do you believe American is not great, like Obama?

Glad I could entertain you chaos, ...and in answer to your question... Yes, I'm Canadian,
...however, the majority of my family is American, so I do have a stake in the issue.

if America goes down the tubes, it sucks Canada in with it, as our economies are very closely tied together.

I've seen the results of bush' misguided policies wreak havoc on many sectors this side of our border,
and quite frankly, I'm not interested in another 4 years of bush.

I didnt know it was a black or white thing--- either it's great, or it's not.

America has always been a great nation.  Was she greater in 1800, before the evil fingers of foreign exploration for oil, the slaughter of the Indians, the purge of Tripoli, and the advent of the federal reserve?

Yes.  Only a blind fool in denial would tell you otherwise.

She's always been great, and always will be.  However, things are never 100% stable.  There will be sad periods in every nation's history.  Bush admin is one of them.  They let 911 happen.  That's not great.  They lied to us about Iraq.  That's not great.  They borrowed $5 tril from China.  That's not great.

You can still be great while a few people are doing some seriously fcked up things.  You can vote for a future where those kinds of lies and crimes don't happen.  Then, she will become a greater nation.

Seriously, I hope your joking cause if you measure a country by their currency value, your economics professor did you no justice. Currency is weighted from several factors, and is one of the most volatile income markets.

How does that sentiment jibe with his wife's statement about her feelings for her country?

Liberals really do take pride in being delusional. America's economy despite the recent problems, is still far and away the best economy on earth by a mile in terms of GDP, wealth, etc. Americas economy is also ranked as the worlds most competitive economy by the World Economic Forum, GDP growth is still at 2.5% ( a full percent higher than the european average) and with 5% of the worlds population America has generated between 20-30% of the worlds output every year for the last 125 years.   WTF numbers did Canada release exactly? They multiplied the amount of people who watch curling live by 100 trillion and put a dollar sign in front of it to disguise its GDP? Canada exports nothing but oil and frostbite and has a welfare state similar to the disasters in europe. Unless you want to include Hockey as an industry or maybe lumber and compare that to other G8 countries, where exactly are these numbers that fare better than all the other G8 nations coming from?
