The talk won't go away until, A) Sen. John McCain picks somebody else to be his running mate on the Republican ticket, or B) McCain picks Lieberman.

The Connecticut senator has been the topic of vice-presidential guesswork by McCain campaign observers since the former Democrat first came out for the Republican.

The two senators are obviously close. On many of McCain's most prominent foreign travels during the campaign, the self-described "independent Democrat" Lieberman has been by his side. He's maintained a brisk schedule of solo campaigning for McCain, too, often in Florida, where he's popular among Jewish and Cuban-American crowds.

Minutes ago, CNN's professional curmudgeon, Jack Cafferty, repeated the oft-asked question in an on-air segment: Is this a real possibility? Cafferty's new CNN online poll is based on a new story from the Financial Times -- the latest that suggests Lieberman is on McCain's "short list."

Whenever the topic arises, there are always a million reasons that pundits unleash about how problematic the decision might be for McCain's campaign. But McCain hasn't always been a politician who made the expected move.

I can see grabbing Lieberman because you want the jewish backing, but...

Lieberman can step in as Prez when it's revealed that McCain is in the early stages of Alzheimers (I can't believe the Enquirer hasn't caught on to that yet)
