Title: How does one get into certain olympic events?
Post by: Hereford on August 11, 2008, 09:05:32 PM: I mean, who exactly sits down one day and comes up with "Hey, I want to be an olympic curler"... or and then sets out to be the best damn curler ever?

The synchronised divers... How do they get into that?

"Hey Jeb... lets go see if we can dive the same out at the lake..."

Badminton is another one. Is there just some people who do it in Jr. High, and can't get enough???

You compete in sanctioned events. Trials, Semi-Finals until the top tier are whittled down. Then the top spots are taken and alternates, the ones who finish behind the top are chosen in case there is an injury or the athlete can`t make it.

Usually its a life long committment.

I realize that Adonis... I am just wondering how one gets into the events in the first place. What leads them to want to do these events?

I have a niece who's 12 and plays soccer at a very high level. Her coach arranged for her to start playing on some sort of team that is a precurser to Olympic level competition. They weed them out from there. I'm guessing that's how most of it works.

keep an eye on the coaches so they dont molest her.
