Title: where should i move to and live?
Post by: Tom on August 12, 2008, 10:19:21 AM
totally off topic, but anywhere here it goes. sick of living in the midwest! only good thing is the cost of living!

thinking in about 2 years moving to either cali or arizona. all the areas i'm looking into has it good and bad points! the areas that i've narrowed it down to are either in arizona, phoenix or tucson and in cali, either santa monica, the del reys (playa and marina) and northern san diego county like escondido, san marcos, oceanside, etc.)

like i said each area has their good and bad points! arizona is way cheaper than cali, but no ocean and hotter than hell plus perhaps kind of boring after awhile?

cali the santa monica/del rey area right on the water, the vibe of the bb world, but outrageously expensive practically unlawful how much it cost to live in that area if your not filthy rich!

cali, northern san diego county, beautiful not too far from the ocean, great climate, a bit cheaper than the whole santa monica, venice, del rey scene and also cheaper than orange county (redondo, manhattan, newport beach towns) quiet but not boring area too.

any ideas guys? i make only decent moolah ($60,000 plus or so a year) god knows i'll never be able to afford a house in cali, of course not sure if i want too though. just looking for a nice 2 bedroom, 2 bath townhouse, condo, apartment in an area where the cost of living is fair, the climate is awesome, great scenery, things to do, a bb/fitness atmosphere, etcetera ( am i asking for too much! laugh)

man I understand I live in northern cali about 6hours north of L.A, San diego, Oceanside, Santa Monica etc. and I love it down there so fun so many chicks but can be expensive though. I live about hour from san francisco, and oakland and two to three hours from santa cruz or monterey but I rather much be down south its kind of boring in central cali and anyways being around people who have money will make you bring your A game beause u will befriend a majority of rich people so you know how the saying goes If you want to make money u have to surround yourself around those whom make money and you'll pick up tips and habits on how to become more financially secure and stable I planning on moving down there too good luck bro ps. texas is not half bad it is hot but while the rest of the country is in a recession they are prospering I did advertising and sold cars while I was there this year San Antonio is a fun city very cheap and great nightlife so you might want to take that into consideration, but in the hollywood l.a area u never know who u will see or who u will meet and u can become or do anything possibilitiea are endless

60k is what you make where you live now.  that's not the same as what you'll be able to make in the new location.  depending on what you do, you might be able to make much more, or not nearly as much.

a 2 bedroom 2 bath apartment in so cal is probably $2k/month, even more as you get closer to the ocean.

plus the areas you list are very different.  SD and OC are very suburban, very white and very conservative.  SM is very Bohemian.

you'd probably be better off first finding a job, then figuring out how much you can afford for rent and how far you want to commute.

Junior, a 1 bedroom apartment in Santa Monica OR Marina Del Rey will set you back $1,500-2K per month. It does not get more expensive, and about 4 times the cost of a shit hole like Escondido or Oceanside.

Depending on what type of work Tom does, his cost of living and disposable income  could be sweet in Myrtle Beach.  Beach, babes, beer, and barbells.  Doesn't sound too bad.

i make only decent moolah ($60,000 plus or so a year)

Hahahahaha. 60K/yr is decent cash in the midwest.  That ain't SHIT here in Cali. Not trying to be mean, but come rent a place for the summer and see whta the cost of living is out here.

They say you have to make a minimum of 86K/yr to have a fighting chance at getting into your own house. And remember, gas here is still over 4 bucks a gallon...

If you aren't following a job out here, I really don't know why you would move here...

CO = Midwest hell hole

Your money will work in AZ.

Does your position pay more in CA?

If you need a beach...then think FL if that is possible.  You salary works better in southern states.

Sarge,

60K is the MINIMUM you need to live in Cali, and not live paycheck to paycheck.

Assuming you want a decent standard of living of course...

And assuming you actually want to get a little ahead every month....

ARIZONA!

Moved here from Nor Cal in '96 and will never go back!!!

LA, San Diego, Vegas all about 5 hour drive and 1 hour flight. Cheaper and cleaner than Cali without all the BS that goes along with living in Cali.

Right now though, 106 degrees but that is why God made A/C. 8 months a year, can not be beat  8)

the midwest or Texas aren't bad choices, change of seasons, cheapest home prices, cheapest gas and food prices in the US.

True, and the people in those areas beat anyone who's been in LA for more than a year.  LA sucks the humanity out of people when they move here and most of them get Hollywood Fever and think they're going to be the next big thing.  The women are as hot as you could ever imagine, but the size of the holes between their legs matches the one between their ears.  For the amount of rent I pay for a 2 bedroom in Santa Monica blocks from the beach, I could be living on a 1 acre piece of land in a 6 bedroom house in the midwest, easy.

The cost of living is outrageous, I'd say 60k a year would be scraping by for a single person, if you have a girlfriend, better hope she's making at least that much as well.  There are some places you could live around LA, but the west side for that income is really pushing it.  You could find a single room to rent for fairly cheap though, maybe around Venice or something, but you won't be really close to the beach and you'll be putting up with someone living with you that you don't know, which is a 50/50 shot.

Colorado in general is changing (downhill) due to all the F*ing retiree Californians moving in.

thanks for all the opinions and comments! colorado would be sweet, only one problem, i hate fricking winter snow and ice! so colorado year round not so good.

in regard to  arizona versus cali my brain tells me i should choose arizona. 1) cost of living! in phoenix area especially a nice upper class area like scottsdale or mesa i could get a 2 bedroom, 2 bath apt in a resort style complex for 1200.00 a month, that same place in cali especially near the beach in s.monica, playa del rey, marina del rey or in orange county near the beach would be more than twice that much!

so i'm thinking to myself " yeah, you like the ocean, but is it worth it to you to pay more than 1000 to 1500 more EVERY MONTH to walk or bike to the beach?!

friends tell me phoenix to l.a. is less than an hour flight and so it would be a cheap flight. best thing to do is live around phoenix and once a month take a short weekend trip to l.a. so you (I) don't live in cali but can visit it all the time and i would still be ahead as far as money wise.

something in my head though keeps on telling me i don't want to be one of those people who think "well, i wanted to live in cali, but had to settle for arizona, because i couldn't make it or afford it out there!" of course how am i settling when in arizona i will get twice as much (living area) for half the cost compared to cali!

so my brain tells me arizona is the best bet. but you know sometimes i might just want to wake up and  just walk and bike to the beach i don't want to have to take a short inexpensive flight every month.

lastly, i lived in burbank, cali (20 miles or so from the beach) about 5 years ago, paid 800.00 a month for a small 1 bedroom apt that was just in a building, no complex, no pool, tennis courts, clubhouse, etcetera. plus been to arizona at least 30 times over the years since i have relatives there. also have relatives in cali though too.

so i guess i'm leaning to somewhere in arizona or northern san diego county, oceanside, escondido area. someone mentioned that northern san diego county is alot cheaper than orange county and monica and the del reys area.

Tom, like QuakerOats said, check out the Midwest.  You can ski in the winter and you can water ski in the summer.  Most people aren't assholes and with the type of income you're pulling in, you'd do well.  Wisconsin's the place to be...the cold weather keeps most gang bangers and criminals away (with the exception of Dahmer and Gein)...homes are cheap  Green Bay is only 2 1/2 hours away to go watch the best NFL team play, the Brewers are awesome, Miller Beer flows a plenty.  Also with Chicago being nearby...it has much to offer also.  A great area imo.

So you are moving to Arizona. Great news. Just some tips.

Scottsdale is not that all that and a bag of chips. But the upside is better than the downside. Yes you can find a two bedroom two bath for about 800.00 in Scottsdale and in rather nice areas. Just be ready for the big fake titted bitches that you will encounter, as they think they own the joint. Most of the populace of Scottsdale now is trying to figure out how to leave, as they have no job, the house is being foreclosed on, and the Hummer is out on the corner trying to get unloaded. You better have a job, as there are none here, or anywhere in Phoeinx for that matter.

You will not be flying to LA every weekend. That's the same line I hear from whiny bitch Californians who have to live here because their company transferred them. If you are young and into the bar scene, this place is paradise, as anything pretty much goes, especially during the winter when we have all the sex crazed come from all other parts ofthe country.

Your typical Scottsdale apartment for the latent heterosexual consists of a washer/dryer/microwave/refrigerator, all items not found, all or in part in California apartments. Dogs are accepted as again the apartment complexes are desperate. Speaking of desperate, if you what to go house, you can get a four bedroom new home rented for about 900. These will be in the far flung idiot suburbs of the drive till you qualify. There are THOUSANDS to choose from. Downside is that you will be driving into Tempe and Scottsdale for pussy.

For the gay stuff, if that's your bent(no pun intended), central Phoenix has a huge gay poulation and is getting bigger all the time. (You can't stop us)

Look forward to standing on your patio overlooking a beautiful pool on a Saturday afternoon, with the sun shining, palm trees in the breeze, and the deck lined with lounges of chicks with coolers of beer (cans only) and picking out the pleasure unit of your choice. They are all from somewhere else, just like you and are horny. If you have a rockin bod, for God's sake show it off, and they will come a running. Later that afternoon, you can talk about what bar to go to and who knows what bouncer at which bar so you can get in.

The gyms are plentifull and usually new, and filled with all manner of monster guys, and sleek chicks. So no issues there if you work out.

It's a strange paradise. Very strange. But people seem to like it. We can't stop people from moving here.

Bonus points. If you have a boat or Jet Ski, and can get to Havasu or the desert lakes around Phoenix, it gets even better on weekends.

I live in Escondido. Pretty nice place, that's why I bought here. Gets rural, with some very rugged county, east of Escondido. That goes for most of San Diego county. Very well landscaped and clean.

If into golf, than there must be at least a dozen course around the area. Ski in the mountain. Bike, hike or camp in the desert or mountains. Hit the beach, straight shot on the freeway. Like casino's'? Four fairly close by.Temps usually steady, but lately has been somewhat hot.  Could also consider Carlsbad, nearer the ocean.  Though prices are going up fast around there. Oceanside it's self is way too expensive and crowded. Being off the parking lot called the 5 freeway does not help much either. I grew up in Oceanside, but away from the ocean and not in the good part.  Geo lives in Oceanside ( last I heard). Another reason to avoid it. Vegas is an hours flight. If you hear people out here saying their going to the River, that's the Colorado River. Outstanding rec area. All water sports and 24/7 party time. Not that far away from North County.

If your married with 60K a year, than forget it. If single, than maybe if you play it smart. Do not want a big chunk of you bucks going for rent or a lease (they mostly lease out here anyway). Night life can be exceptional. All kinds of very hot Asian, Latin and blond (real or made up)  women around, if into the racial smorgasbord thing. Even the MLTF can be extra hot and in great shape.

Also great gym's to workout at. Either inland or along the beach areas. See 9's and 10's all the time, with regards to women, at these places..

What about you other guys? What's your take on where you live? Good place to live/work?

Anyone in Northern Cali or the Northwest have an opinion?

Try this CNN Money cost of living calculator - http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/costofliving/costofliving.html (http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/costofliving/costofliving.html))  It shows that for someone living in Des Moines, IA (the heart of the midwest) at $60,000 you would need an equivalent of almost $100,000 a year to live the same lifestyle in LA.

Maybe you should consider Corpus Christi, TX.  You need less money to live the same lifestyle as in Des Moines and you get the beaches, the climate and the babes during spring break every year.

Salary in Des Moines IA:
$60,000
Comparable salary in Corpus Christi TX:
$57,855.04

If you move from Des Moines IA to Corpus Christi TX...

Groceries will cost: 7.735% less
Housing will cost: 6.1% less
Utilities will cost: 1.577% less
Transportation will cost: 2.848% more
Healthcare will cost: 3.123% less

totally off topic, but anywhere here it goes. sick of living in the midwest! only good thing is the cost of living!

thinking in about 2 years moving to either cali or arizona. all the areas i'm looking into has it good and bad points! the areas that i've narrowed it down to are either in arizona, phoenix or tucson and in cali, either santa monica, the del reys (playa and marina) and northern san diego county like escondido, san marcos, oceanside, etc.)

like i said each area has their good and bad points! arizona is way cheaper than cali, but no ocean and hotter than hell plus perhaps kind of boring after awhile?

cali the santa monica/del rey area right on the water, the vibe of the bb world, but outrageously expensive practically unlawful how much it cost to live in that area if your not filthy rich!

cali, northern san diego county, beautiful not too far from the ocean, great climate, a bit cheaper than the whole santa monica, venice, del rey scene and also cheaper than orange county (redondo, manhattan, newport beach towns) quiet but not boring area too.

any ideas guys? i make only decent moolah ($60,000 plus or so a year) god knows i'll never be able to afford a house in cali, of course not sure if i want too though. just looking for a nice 2 bedroom, 2 bath townhouse, condo, apartment in an area where the cost of living is fair, the climate is awesome, great scenery, things to do, a bb/fitness atmosphere, etcetera ( am i asking for too much! laugh)

Leave the country and move to Thailand...

And be sure NOT to put on any Pro BBing shows like the CO Pro/AM (unless you have a brain) because you will lose your ass like Seana Rey did.

You wish you were Shawn Ray ;)

Col Springs is nice too. Kinda spendy tho. Kinda becoming a strip-mall community too...

Colorado in general is changing (downhill) due to all the F*ing retiree Californians moving in.

The airforce chicks there are just begging for cock.

dude 60 grand per year won't cut it to buy a home in that areas you are looking, plus the orange county attitude of the self absorbed people out ther wears on you. i loved living in cali but after a while it got old. everyone out there thinks they are more important than the next person, stick with AZ. phoenix is beautiful, hot in the summer but beautiful.   my preference to live is south fla. tampa area is just awsome. good luck
