How much protein is optimal?
.5g per pound of lean body mass?
???
-
Just stick with 1-1.5g per lb of body weight.
Is it optimal? Who knows. I just follow it...

I think there's a lower limit, which is different for everyone. Above that, the body can easily adapt.
For most people, 0.5 g/lb is probably sufficient, even when trying to add mass.

Agreed, the body doesn't need that much extra protein - Your hair and nails grow every day regardless, the amount of muscle you can put on in a day is less building than that
