Some are questioning his brutal 10k calories a day:
http://www.webmd.com/diet/news/20080813/the-olympic-diet-of-michael-phelps
excerpt:
How can Michael Phelps eat 10,000 calories a day and still be so lean?
There is no doubt he packs away a ton of food, but it is unlikely that he actually eats that many calories a day, an expert believes. University of Pittsburgh Director of Sports Nutrition Leslie Bonci, MPH, RD, says eating 10,000 calories a day is almost impossible. "To consume 10,000 calories a day, he would need to be eating all day long."
Bonci estimates that to support his 6-foot-4-inch, approximately 190-pound frame, Phelps' rigorous training regime requires roughly 1,000 calories per hour while he is racing or training; she suggests he probably eats closer to 6,000 calories per day.

::) ::)
-
i also have a hard time believeing he eats 10, 000 a day.
Not disputing it or calling bullshit, just questioning it
-
He just wants to brag.
-
well, since most of what he eats are junk foods, it could be possible. how many calories in 3 slices of papa john pizza? you do the math

I find halarious that some on here think that they're bodybuilding heros can put away 10k per day in the offseason while burining a fraction (less than a fraction) than Phelps.

was he tested for the show ... or he randomly was not chosen

was he tested for the show ... or he randomly was not chosen
With what he's been winning by gold and breaking records, I'm sure he's tested quite often.
-
i mean was he tested at the Olympics ... out of the competition testing is controversial … if your federation wants you to do the show they will get someone elses urine under your name and you will pass the test … the test at the show is what counts … so I just wanted to know if anyone know if he was tested and should we wait for the result or it is a done deal

He is probably tested more than anyone. And if he was on something then so is every other swimmer. He is not beating people by a mile. Hell he won today by 1/100th of a second. DOn't you think every country he is competing against is demanding he is tested or do you guys think it is a conspiracy and every country wants him to break Spitz's record cause they hate him. Some of you guys are simply morons and are underachievers. Why else would you try to discredit someone for doing so well.

There is no test for human growth hormone.
hope this heps.

They were quoting in the UK media that Phelps eats 12,000 calories a day. Either way, it's probably bullshit - I saw a list of his food and reckon it's probably closer to 6,000-7,000 calories a day and a lot of it if high fat stuff that gets burned off while doing swimming training for four hours a day. No-one unless you're morbidly obese eats 12,000 calories a day.

Say that to Cutler's face :D

Cutler doesn't eat 12,000 calories a day.
-
Cutler doesn't eat 12,000 calories a day.
exactly, Cutler eats more like 6,000 but there is a monster on getbig who calls himself "onetimehard" who eats 12,000 calories a day.

yes there is. It's a matter of when they will start using it.
-

yeah, but none of these guys will be affected NOW.
They might test the blood in 6 months or 6 years, and then strip medals (if they want to give the IOC the black eye of stripping a vast majority of their records for this year)
The IOC has bluffed in 04 and 08, saying both years that "This is the year we test for gh!" but it hasn't happened yet.
Anyway, even if they do test, Phelps is a rich man, won $1M yesterday bonus from Speedo, has a ton of endorsement opportunities. They can take his medals later, but he'll have the $.
-
He eats 10-12K while training 5 hrs a day but for 1-2 races a day in Beijing I doubt he eats that much maybe 7-8K.
-
So if you ate continuously for 24 hours you might barely take in 12,000 calories. ::)

Exactly. Drug tests are 100% reliable these days. It's impossible to beat it nowadays. Think of marion jones for example.
-
Actually the swimmer dude bumped his claim up to 12K calories a day! I think he is exagerating.

No......it's not impossible. But very unlikely.

Yeah, 99% of the athletes are clean. And there are no undetectable chemicals like designer steroids.

it is better than nothing ...

i am sure that you are an over achiever ... What I am saying is … hi achievers should be tested … not a gymnast from a poor country who placed last … top athletes (medalists) should all be tested … that is the best way to apply the system
I am not bothered of who won … if they find a way through the system then power to them … I am just questioning the IOC WADA doping test system
-
I don't see how he could actually process so much food over the course of 3 meals...that's just ridiculous. Who the hell could process so much food that quickly?

It's better to stop the testing. Only the "B" athletes are caught nowadays because they don't have access to the best doctors and drugs unlike the "A" athletes.

I've seen Michael eat a huge burrito with all this grease cheese beans and rice that would
make Mexican puke.

"B" athletes in the Olympics? I don't think so. Even the alternates arn't "B" athletes. Everyone athlete in the olympics has qualified to have the right to be there.

LOL Everything clashes with a zx-r!!
As for phelps....growth hormone and 5 hours a day swimming will quite easily burn those calories off!
-
Why was Phelps CRAVING a cheeseburger after his race, and saying he was just looking forward to "eating whatever he wants", when he already supposedly eats whatever he wants and can't eat enough ::) ::)

the picture's fine. i don't know bikes, but that one seems nice to me. it's just the "idea" behind the photo, is all.
-
phelps is all hype and drugs......hgh to the max!!!! you all think he cant afford it? ::)
-
Oh brother!
-
I train for both BBing and Outrigging and even putting away a lot of calories i don't get near to 12,000. I would be suprised if swimming burnt that much more than outrigging.
Everyone is different. I know a guy who does some long sessions outrigging and surf skiing and he doesn't really eat much at all.
I also find the more junk food i eat the better i look, as long as i don't eat stupid amounts at once and let it all digest ok before the next meal, then i can eat pretty much anything.
Too much clean food makes you fat IMO. There is only so much rice and tuna i can eat i can't really take that much.
