there are so many to mention, Bo Jackson, Herschel Walker, O.J. Simpson, Billy Sims, Earl Campbell but my vote is going to have to go to Barry Sanders, what do you guys think?
-
stats for 1988......2,628 yards rushing, 39 TD's, 3,249 all purpose yards, 11 games with at least 2 TD's, 4 300 yard rushing games, 625 yards rushing in 2 consecutive games, 1162 yards rushing in 4 consecutive games, 238.9 yards per game rushing average, 11 100 yard rushing games, absolutely incredible.
-
probably ron dayne
-
Dayne did have some freaky numbers at Wisconsin, 7,000 career rushing yards.
-
you could definitely throw Tony Dorsett, Marcus Allen, Ricky Williams and Mike Rozier into the discussion.
-
Best college running back? For one season or over his entire collegiate career?
For one season, it was Barry Sanders of Oklahoma State in 1988, hands down, game over. Shared a backfield with ex-Bill Thurman Thomas. What a backfield!!
Over three or four seasons you could name Ricky Williams of Texas, Ron Dayne of Wisconsin, or Herschel Walker out of Georgia.

archie griffin period

So many good ones it's hard to call. :-\
-
Reggie Bush
Ricky Williams
-
Mike Hart

-
Reggie Bush
Ricky Williams
i wouldn't put Bush in there but i agree on Ricky Williams, hell Bush isn't even in the top 5 USC RB's ever let alone college football.

that's great but it's one game, i've got Marcus Allen, O.J. Simpson, Charles White, Ricky Bell and Mike Garrett all ahead of Reggie Bush on JUST THE USC LIST, let alone college football in general.

what about the only player to win two heismans
-
Barry was a beast, but Bo was the man... You can easily make a case for Barry though.
The guy was definitely elite.

Charles White, Ricky Bell and Mike Garrett all ahead of Reggie Bush?? You're fucking crazy...MA for sure, OJ maybe, but not any of the others.

An old friend Anthony Davis was pretty good. I was a business partner with Mike Garrett for several months before I found out he played football. He is only 5'7". I introduced him to Chuck Norris and at the exact same time they both said "I thought you were bigger" That was funny. I found out he played football when we had a meeting at BodyGlove and the owner Robbie got all excited and said MIKE GARRETT! man you were my hero. That is when I found out Mike was a Heisman Trophy winner. I think he is the Athletic Director at USC still. A really really nice guy. He used to also be in charge of the boxing program at The Forum.
I just never equated Mike with football because he was so small. I remember one day though he said the only other person he knew bigger than me was Curly Culp.

I swear on my mother...thats my great uncle...from yuma AZ Curly Culp...he is going to be inducted into the KC chiefs hall of fame...he was only like 6'2 265...but he was an absolute beast...he got added to the all 3-4 defense team...also got best athlete ever from AZ...national champ in wrestling also...man its so cool that someone else knows him.
he had a shit load of money but my grandmother said he lost it because he invested it in cow cloaning back in the 80s...

Best college running back ever???
relative to the league or conference they played, in I'll go with Faulk @ SDSU...
my personal favorite ?....I'd go with Earl or archie although I used to dispise Ohio State !

I've known Chuck since around 1986 or so. I met him through another stuntman friend I have. Went to his house in Lemon Heights and also set him up with a short documentary for the United Way where he won an award. If you see him tell him hi for me he knows me by name.
Actually the pic below is at the Forum Boxing where he asked me to ask Mike Garrett for some tickets. He met Mike and that i when they said that. We had dinner with Dr. Buss who owned the Forum and the Lakers I think this pic was taken at the party afterwards. I haven't seen Chuck since around 2000 or so

Yeah. Not even close. Those are PlayStation stats. He is the most dominant college and best pro RB I've ever seen.

Gotta agree here.Bush isn't even in my top 15-20.

Marshall was great, we had the luck of having him here in STL and he brought us a Super Bowl win, he didn't get the credit he deserved in college because he played for a small school.

How did RB with Faulk's talent end up at a podunk school like San Diego State anyway?
Man, some major college scouts passed him over while he was in high school. They probably din't like his build. He was always doughy looking and not very muscular. Big thighs and a small upper body is probably what keep the major schools from calling.

everyone wanted him to play DB and say he cant play RB and SDSU was the only school that let him play RB....

Jim Brown.
-
Jim Brown.
what were his stats at Syracuse? i don't remember off hand.
-
Off-hand his numbers don't jump off the page. I don't think he ever accumulated 1,000 yards in a season but seasons were shorter in those days.
-
Brown attended Syracuse University. As a sophomore, Brown was the second leading rusher on the team. That winter, he was Syracuse's second leading scorer in basketball, averaging 15 points. He also earned a letter in track that spring. As a junior, he rushed for 666 yards (5.2 per carry), averaged 11.3 points in basketball and was named a second-team All-American in lacrosse. In his senior year, Brown was first-team All-American in both football and lacrosse (43 goals in 10 games to tie for the national scoring championship). He averaged 6.2 yards in running for 986 yards -- third most in the country despite Syracuse playing only eight games -- and scored 14 touchdowns. In the regular-season finale, a 61-7 rout of Colgate, he rushed for 197 yards, scored six touchdowns and kicked seven extra points for 43 points. Then in the Cotton Bowl, he rushed for 132 yards, scored three touchdowns and kicked three extra points. But a blocked extra point after Syracuse's third touchdown was the difference as TCU won 28-27.

damn the years pass so quick, 1995-1997 seems like just yesterday, who can forget Ahman Green and Lawrence Phillips on those awesome mid 90's Nebraska teams.

A better question is why didn't he win the Heisman over Gino Toretta?

Valid points...however, despite the fact SDSU doesn't field a minor league NFL team like some schools do, who wouldn't want to go there just for the atmosphere?

Barry Sanders all the way. Hell he could have beat Payton's NFL record and would still have it had he played at least another 4 years.
-
Barry Sander (the grestest ever) - The end :)

College running backs ;)
Um, most NFL running backs were college running backs first.

Of course my man but you were talking about NFL records.

hey old school look at the top of this thread, i believe Sanders had the best single season a college RB ever had in 1988, 2600 yards rushing, 3250 all purpose yards from scrimmage, 39 TD's, 4 300 yard rushing games, 11 200 yard rushing games and bear in mind this was in the Big 12 or Big 8 at the time and was playing teams like Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, etc., absolutely amazing.

True...although to be absolutely correct, the old Southwest Conference was still in existence, and Texas played there. Still, the Big 8 was awesome in those days.
Speaking of Texas...don't forget "Tyler Rose" Earl Campbell.
I think that sometimes a running back's college career is forgotten because of his NFL achievements (or lack thereof). For example, a lot of people forget that Ki-Jana Carter was an awesome RB for Penn State; they only remember that his NFL career essentially ended on his third preseason carry. Oregon's Bobby Moore is also forgotten, probably because after college he moved to receiver and changed his name to Ahmad Rashad, married and divorced that bitch Clair Huxtable, but unlike Jim Brown, does not pee on women.

or the NCAA career rushing leader Ron Dayne who didn't do a lot in the pros.
-
Talk about bad karma for RB's that were great in college, but now nowhere in the NFL...........Cedric Benson, Ronnie Brown and Cadillac Williams.
-
u can say that again

hahaha, two of them came out of Auburn, they've still got time, sometimes these guys don't get going in the pros for awhile.

Just about any RB who either played at Penn State or was drafted by the Bears . . . .

2 Of those guys are from Auburn and Brandon Jacobs the Giants running back left Auburn because he was 3rd string :D
