In 2001 they discontinued the Master's Olympia! Why?
'The powers that be' provided many excuses/rationalizations for striking this event 'off' the Olympia calendar!
I call upon the IFBB to 'bring back' the Master's.
Come on Bob, get behind this. You have a lot of clout in the industry.

It wasn't making money I guess or like female bodybuilding lack of interest ???
-
The shows don't make money, none of them ever have.
It is all about endorsement. Anyone heard of MuscleTec.
If HustleTec got behind a Master's O then we would all see an about face!
-
For the first time I agree with Hank Wood.

Ask your friend Jan Tana...by the way i presented a "trophy" at the comp in 2002 ;)
-
Don Youngblood tears a tricep yet wins the master's O. lynchburg...ouch!
-
Should make it a 50 yr old plus event and run it WITH the Mr Olympia to save money. The fans would love it.
-

It was actually 2004, with 2003 being the last rendition (Claude Groulx won).
-
Master's should be bought back!!! >:(
-
Chick you are the athlete's rep. You have the power to start the ball rolling re. the Master's O.
Everyone loved this comp. It had more energy and interest than the regular show.
Do something!

If everyone "loved" this competition.,..it would still be here today.
Bottom line is, no one cares about the old guys...
-
personally i enjoyed the Masters Olympia!
but then again................... .....im old!

Reinstatement of the Masters might not be a bad idea. Look at it this way.
A lot of the present "O" contenders and most of the previous "O" winners are in or within their Masters' years.
And most of these guys are still gathering a lot of attention and interest from their fans and families.
I'd like to see Larry Scott and other "old time" greats compete again among their peers and they might still be interested enough to do it.
My suggestion is that the IFBB give it a try fully realizing that many of today's "O" contenders will be fully Masters qualified in the not too distant future.
I further suggest that the IFBB run a test to see if a masters' reinstatement is feasible by simply holding the Masters' competition at the Olympia Expo and allow the top three Masters to guest pose at the Olympia finals while the final scores are being tabulated.
If it's merely a question of time, just allow all three of them to guest pose together - something like their final posedown.
If it's a further question of "not enough time", one of you guys on here should seek the IFBB's approval and support to make it happen.
I can almost guarantee ya that Bob will be up there collecting a Master's trophy before his twilight years and thank the guys who made it happen.
-
I think they are waiting for Rusty to retire from the 'sport'
-
As i said earlier, check with Jan Tana, she's the one that put on a nice show

Unfortunately Bill, Masters BB is not like seeing the old timers play a nostalgic game of baseball.....no one wants to see an ailing, old, past their prime by 20 years pro on stage with trunks on...I'd personally prefer to keep their integrity and image of when they were at their best.
-
since more and more pro contests are having a lightweight class, then they could easily have an over 40 or 45 class. and like you're proposing for the under 202 weight class, it could be there are no cross-overs. then, people would be interested in the best of the best competing for the Masters Olympia title.
before you complain about how long the Olympia might become, that's easily fixed by limiting the Olympia to only the overall winners from the previous 12 months. None of this 5th place at the Ironman gets you into the Olympia crap.
-
If Ronnie was the reigning Mr.O, I'm sure bob would be scurrying along to bring it back. An atrophying ronnie would own bobby chickerilloo though.

Why did you compete in Masters events then? Just coz they were the only ones you stood a chance in?
IF you added a Masters (50+) event to run on the same day as the Olympia, the fans would love it. Would be good for bodybuilding too

Two names
Hans Hopskins and Don Youngblood
Let these men enjoy the rest of their lives without killing themselves

Didn't Youngblood die already?

That's exactly the point he was making: do not encourage contests that push mature guys to extremes that jeopardize their health. It's a reasonable argument but I'm not sure I buy it. BB is supposed to be a fun recreational activity. Nobody is forcing these guys to go to unhealthy extremes. By the time they are master’s competitors they should have enough balance in their lives to realize that bodybuilding is not everything. Why (literally) kill yourself for a trophy and paltry prize money when you have a spouse, family, maybe even grandkids to live for?
Train, diet and compete but scale back on dosage and have fun. If you want to die over a contest that is your business, but you (and your survivors) will have no one to blame but yourself.

but it is ok to encourage younger guys to jeopardize their health?

of course it's OK. who cares, if they don't care for their own Asses.

I competed in ONE event, and tried my best to persuade as many top notch athletes over 40 to come and compete as well....at the end of the day, a handful showed up, and no more butts in the seats....
As for standing a chance in the open, I'll let my record speak for itself....

I think they started doing this in order for more people to show up because their favorite BBer was in the contest, yet couldn't get on the stage any other way (winning a contest).
Similar to someone like Milos; great look onstage and has an exceptional physique. But by his own admission, he entered 72 IFBB shows and won only one. But he was top ten at the Olympia quite a few times, and I think top six for ten years or something.
-
Chick, you cannot be that old. Yo, you still hang with Matt from the 02 battle for the O? Sorry if I'm out of date.
-

Ditto... I got a kick from the old guys mixing it up again.

but as soon as someone qualifies for the Olympia, then they usually sit out the rest of the year. So the top 5 from the Ironman qualifying for the Olympia in February takes away from the Europa, Tampa Bay, Houston, etc.

Not true....other than Phil and Gustavo...the other 3 have competed in other shows.
