I have tried EVERYTHING...on meds now, have been for months...they help but I still wake up and can't get back to sleep. I wish humans didn't need sleep.

while dieting I am never tired and I can sleep 4 hours a night and I am good to go.
off-season I can sleep 8-10 hours and I get up in the morning feeling super tired, like I didn't sleep at all

I have suffered with insomnia my entire life. nothing otc or any sort of sleep or anxiety meds really help and I have tried everything over the years, even like 60mg of ambien just makes me feel a little drowsy. basically I just go to bed and lay there for a few hours til I eventually drift off to sleep, once I am able to get to sleep though I sleep pretty well... its actually falling asleep that is the real problem.
-
I did but lately it's been alot better. I basically just set my alarm clock early enough so that I only got 4 hours sleep, after a week I could fall asleep each night at the same time and wake up at the same time daily. The week i only got 4 hours sleep i felt so drained but it worked. 8 hours sleep per night now
-
Just try and clear your mind bro
I think you've made a habit of thinking too much, or being overly emotional before bedtime, so of course you wont be able to sleep. One thing I've started doing, and think you should try to, is running or walking around 7pm before the set of dusk to clear my head. If that doesn't work, then it's a 1mg ativan, or a few bowls.
Remember, environment is a big thing. You in a place that gets you heated? Or angry? Then of course you'll have trouble sleeping.

Actually Marijuana helps but I can't constantly smoke that before I go to sleep; it's not exactly healthy.

As a gymgoer, how do you deal with it? It has stunted my progress over the years and just costs me so much energy.

Only when I try to sleep.

well I have been fortunate enough to be self employed since college and have worked from home for the past 10 years and do not have set hours as to when I absolutely have to work... in some ways it is obviously aggravates the situation as I often don't have to set an alarm clock and usually don't have to worry about showing up somewhere on lack of sleep affecting my performance. I will probably eventually get a second job to not only make more money but to give my schedule some sort of routine... lack of a routine definitely does not help the issue.
as far as the lifting goes, I try to usually lift early afternoon and sometimes take a short nap afterwards, if I work out in the evening instead of feeling tired I typically feel especially energetic. that coupled with being a night owl by nature certainly doesn't help.
the best thing I could advise is avoid developing a crutch such as drinking in an effort to get sleep, I don't really drink anymore but there was a time in life where I used to regularly as it seemed to work to get some sleep, but in the long run all it really creates is problems that far outweigh any benefits.

Nightly. Got some temazipam a few weeks ago. Worked ok one night, another night nothing.
Ever try remembering your dream from the night before while in bed? Or just let your mind wander where it wants? Bah! What the hell do I know...

Same here.
When i TRY to sleep, i lay awake for hours.
When i fall asleep on the couch for no reason, i sleep no problem.

I wake up several times at night as well. Do you wake up too or do you sleep the whole night through?
-
you have insomnia because you have anxiety. you are worried about something. Find out what is bothering you and deal with it.

I almost never have a problem going back to sleep as long as it is dark. if the sun is up i usually have a hard time falling back alseep. i have thick black curtians in my bedroom for this reason.
i wake up at least once every night, either to piss or just for no reason.
Falling asleep the first time is the hardest part, but i have found that meditation works very well unless i am really stressed out and my mind won't stop racing.
i think my problem is anxiety.
ZMA, L-tryptophan, Benedryl all work well for me.
