but it IS all 'him, him, him"!

you don't have to be a great man to be a great sportman, please make the distinction.

However, there are those who are nice on roids, thus, he is still just a jerk.

But, maybe after all the hard training and suffering, he gets a pass

Interesting China topping the overall medal tally still. Auatralia on top for most medals per cap of popullation, and Americians still complaining.

Yep nothing changes ;D

He's 21 yrs old, and he "bumped" chests and hugged the other guys and all that, they were picking each other up and stuff, we got full coverage here, not the split NBC style. He won both sprints in WR style, made history, will make stacks of money, nothing will change that.

Plus Bolt and JA will prolly take the relay as well, being as the Tyson Gay just dropped the batton so US went out in the quarter finals, so they are no threat, so JA should coast to a gold.

It's all good for JA and Bolt. When he did as well as he did, certain ppl are gonna talk, its what Jamaicans would call pure passa passa 8)

We complain if at all bc we know how good things can be, we don't settle for food rationing, summarily putting people to death for spitting on the ground, and cutting women's hands off for driving

So, you want him to shake a another dude's hand and say, "good race, sorry you came in 2nd." Only people who are losers in life search for such bullshit. And Bolt was not rubbing his win in. In track and field, there is a lot of jawing that you don't see, there is a lot of rivalry going on. People were complaining when the Americans were running around with their flag b/f, and that blew up.

You talk about that but not about the Cuban dude who said he didn't care that the Chinese dude (who was fluke) was hurt and out of the race, not like the Chinese would have won anyway.

Bolt is 21 years old, and at the top of his chosen sport, a sport that is very flashy, and him being 6'5, he might be a dawning of a new era, in which taller sprinters will be sought out due to their  long stride...

BEIJING -- IOC president Jacques Rogge criticized Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt on Thursday for showing a lack of respect to other competitors after his record-breaking gold-medal performances in the 100 and 200 meters.

"That's not the way we perceive being a champion," Rogge said.

Usain Bolt's look-at-me flaunting after winning the 100, and later 200, was criticized by the IOC.

The International Olympic Committee chief hailed Bolt's stunning achievements in the two sprints, comparing him to American great Jesse Owens, but said Bolt should have cut out the look-at-me flaunting and acknowledged the other athletes.

"I have no problem with him doing a show," Rogge said in an interview with three international news agency reporters. "I think he should show more respect for his competitors and shake hands, give a tap on the shoulder to the other ones immediately after the finish and not make gestures like the one he made in the 100 meters."

Having built a huge lead in Saturday's 100 final, Bolt slowed, glanced around with arms outstretched and pounded his chest before crossing the finish line in a world record time of 9.69 seconds.

"I understand the joy," Rogge said. "He might have interpreted that in another way, but the way it was perceived was 'catch me if you can.' You don't do that. But he'll learn. He's still a young man."

Bolt, who turned 22 on Thursday, stormed to another one-sided victory Wednesday night in the 200, breaking Michael Johnson's 12-year-old record of 19.32 seconds and lowering the mark to 19.30.

Bolt made little effort to congratulate the other runners as he wrapped himself in a Jamaican flag and set off on a solo victory lap. Swaying to the reggae music on the stadium loudspeakers, he walked barefoot around the track, putting his face inches from a TV camera, raising an index finger and yelling, "I am No. 1! I am No. 1!"

"He still has to mature," Rogge said. "I would love him to show more respect for his competitors. That's not the way we perceive being a champion. But he will learn in time. He should shake hands with his competitors and not ignore them. He'll learn that sooner or later. But [he's] a great athlete, of course."

We're the US of A.  We don't have to spend our time complaining and whining about being offended.  let's focus on what we're gonna win today and this week, instead of focusing our mental energies into past stuff.  Winners don't have time to whine about being offended because they're too bush winning.

WEH WEH WEH!

sports needs bastards, egomaniacs ergo: characters! Could you imagine every athleet being a good sport like Jay Cutler? nobody would watch sport again. It's the show of emotion that keeps people excited, and makes us relate to them. I would be very surprised if the winner immediately started shaking hand with his competitors, as Rogge suggested. That would feel very contrived.

People acting purely out of duty are strange, not authentic. How would you like it when a friend came to visit you in the hospital, because he felt it was his duty to do so, not because he was your friend pers's, I'd be pissed!
in order to relate to, and 'appreciate' people they have to act, or atleast come accross as authentic, that also means that there's a number of authentic bastards amongst us.

do some reading on the subject: www.amazon.com search for philosophy authenticity, might open your eyes.

Not saying you should. I don't. Guy's a scum bag motivated by money.

Bolt's only 21, just turned 22 yesterday. He's still young. Of course he's going to boast. All the other athletes do too. The guy who got 2nd in the 100 was going wild. Was funny. He should congratulate the other racers after he wins but it's not the end of the world. Eventually he'll lose and then the guy who wins will probably be bragging in his face.

yes......runners (especially 100m guys) are arrogant. I used to run the 100 and 4X100 in hs and college and played FB...they are ALL D!CKS. (most of them atleast)

I just ran cause the coaches asked, so I never really got along with them. lol

If they dare came to the grid iron (which they didn't after they saw us hitting)...I probably would have killed them for letting a coach lie to them and tell them to try to play football. lol

I have no beef with them though. They are just "soft"

I don't know enough about Bolt, but my guess is that he's like the typical NFL wide reciever, although I admit that I could be wrong and he's just a dude who's really proud for his country and what he's accomplished. Carribean culture is a little different.

Methinks he couldn't care less about Jamaica. I haven't heard him talk about them once in any of his post race speeches. But he has talked about how he blew the world away and what not. Not that it matters. He's done most of his training in the USA.

all in all I have no beef with what he did.

I would have probably had a limo waiting, opened the sun roof , put a crown and robe on and waived to everybody as we circled the entire stadium if I ran that 100 or 200 like he did.

Bolt hugged them, they were lifting each other, doing that banging their chests together stuff, the WI and American guys. If some guy thinks a 21yr should somberly shake hands like some bank meeting fine, let him think that. Bolt is still the 100 and 200m winner and record holder of both. He's on top of the world at this time, JA is as well, and not that anyone would understand, but his actions and the female sprinters will have an unprecendented positive socio-economic impact for the young kids in sports throughout the region.

Oh god this is stupid.

Who said he never shook their hands etc. He achieved the greatest thing he ever dreamed of.

It is not 1930's england when they have a gentlemanly handshake after the race and smoke a pipe.

Its the olympics! I dont know why all this bs about his arrogance is coming from.

Its not arrogance if you can back it up ;)
Title: Re: Bolt shows disrespect
Post by: CQ on August 21, 2008, 02:17:03 PM
How so?

Long story...Carib region of great contrast - very poor & very rich islands. No middle ground here. We do some stuff jointly as Caricom, but are seperate nations, including sport funding. That will change somwhat now, due to high placings of all Carib, and resources will be pooled better instead of the rich islands who only have like 20,000 ppl each max normally shoving mad cash down ppl's throats who won't even make the Olympics to begin with, while world class potentials get nothing :-\

So yeah, he did alot for JA's future, which he spoke about with our press.

Speaking of respect, you ever notice how inner city youth often get into a tremendous lather over:

They don't get that if they don't give respect, then they are not entitled to it.

What about initially? Like when applying for internship or whatever, is where you went important? Serious question.

If you graduate from an Ivy league school and are looking to get into a Big 6 accounting firm or top law firm, if you rank high, yes.

Interships select you, you don't select them ordinarily. In these cases school and rank count.

After this, though, YOUR productivity counts the most,

nothing else.

The better the internship, the better chance of a good gig, yes? Like an internship at the Mayo clinic would be a better bargaining chip for a solid job than say an internship at St. Joes in Pontiac, Mi.?

Big_Mal's in Med school...I think this trump's your schooling...

And actually he didn't, he called you a "hater", in which I agree.

Let's take this back to when you wee 21, at that age, and your mentality then, would you, after breaking a WR and winning a Gold medal, for a tiny country, be shaking other competitors hands, with no emotion?

Chances are the answer would be no.

No. He said he is in final 'book work' for med school.

NOT in med school. And, lemme tell ya...if he is looking to TRUMP anyone at anything, he should search for a new profession....we have enough asshole, pompous docs here already.

And actually he didn't, he called you a "hater", in which I agree.

I was brought very differently...TWO parents at home...VERY strict...and YES, I would handle myself with aplomb and proper comportment....even if I were 12 years old.

Chances are the answer would be no.

Dude, now, it's who you know...I live less than 30 minutes from DC, and in the Balt-Wash area, there are more young single people making "bank", than any other place in in the US.
Many have gotten their jobs, not just for productivity, but networking and who you know. Not so much the merit system that you speak of.

Morehouse, a mediocre school, ::), Are you stuck in the 70's? Morehouse, Spelman, Clark, those are some great schools to go to...

a "Hater' or "Hata", is just that, someone who hates on others,  Example, the guy down the street from you just bought a Mercedes Benz ClK63 AMG Black series. He obviously doesn't care about gas mileage, because he as the money to pay for a limit edition 100K car. You meanwhile (I don't know what you have, this is a example) have a 2004 Toyota Corolla that you are still paying on, plus bills piling up. Instead of congratulating  him, you feel a sense of loathing and jealous against him, and wish him ill will. This is a hater, those who are jealous of others success, but don't do anything to change their situations, but spend their energy spouting off on the "little things", because that have a deep seated lathing for those who have it better or who have succeeded where the "hata" has failed.

Then I am not a hater. I revel in the exploits of others.

Persoanlly, I think pissing money away on material things is just that...pissing it away.

And I'd never buy a foreign car.

I am close to retired. I have done well. I am completely self made. I have never ever worked for anyone. You can/ will too.

Those are OKAY schools.

I live on Yale campus, so you know what I am around all day. Pompous Yale asses.

i actaully agree with many of your points, especially about the post above mine, plus you are coming from a diff era. Big_Mal's is cool, and has been able to balance bodybuilding, school, and being  a playa and actually get somewhere with all of it. I respect that, and he doesn't throw it in anybody's face, so he doesn't garner any hate from me

Those are not bad grades.

Like I have said...many of you younger guys will eventually realize that all those grades and numbers, while necessary early on, mean squat in the real world. You will see.

For "the Harvard of the south" they are.  My school has been called the same.  I don't agree with it, but our average SAT score is over 1300.

You see, negroes are beasts.  They have to make shows of dominance because they don't have the brain power to do anything else but hoot and holler.  They don't care about anyone but themselves because that would be a show of weakness and they can't let other apes or blacks see that.  Plus, jamaicans are dumb as rocks.

In all seriousness... the shit about him needing to mature is complete bullshit.  When Michael Johnson was 21, he was world class and wa always very respectful to everyone else he ran against.  He was also one of the whitest black people ever, came from a real family, had a father around and went to elementary school, middle school, high school, graduated from college with a degree in business.  He represents .01% of the black population, wheras bolt represents ever nignog out there; showy, stupid and selfish.

I am stupid? You have gone to shitty, second tier schools.

That southern shit would not fly in the Northeast.

Try and get a residency here at Yale from your corn-fried school.

You will never be truly respected coming out of there.

I have forgotten more than you know, but you will have your chance.

Lose your arrogance, you are already going to have enough problems, kid.

What about initially? Like when applying for internship or whatever, is where you went important? Serious question.

Everything else being equal, you are more likely to get invited to an interview, the more respected your school is, but there are other ways how you can earn points with the recruiter - have relevant and/or interesting work (or life) experience, taylor your CV to emphasize the points that are important for the position you are applying for (rather than one size fits all), write a good cover letter etc...

You should listen to Moosejay...he's old and knows shit...thats why he trolls a board for young men and says things like "I've forgotten more than you'll ever know"....because he's old and has already done everything worthwhile...sometimes he'll call you son...or junior if you're lucky...and tell you what you need to get ahead in life...even though he's never even traveled to another country...doesn't matter...he doesn't need to...he's "been there and done that"

You ungrateful little shits should bow down and show respect to this man...look what he's trying to do for this board!  What's wrong with all of you!?

Remember kiddies that obedience from young males to old males is the most prized and rewarded possession in this culture.  And think about how that manifests itself. :o

In my job, we have Private Investigators double check CVs of Hedge Fund Managers before we invest with them. You'd be surprised how many claim to have graduated from schools they've never seen from the inside, worked at companies that have never heard of them etc....

Decorum is still necessary.

How? Why?

the only necessity for these athletes is to undergo drugtests and have their license. Any sports event is a test of physical prowess, of skill, not a test of character. Arguably it might be beneficial for the athlete to respect certain unwritten codes, but necessity? no way.

and you say that even at 12 you'd shake hands like the good little boy your parents taught you to be, and then we're back at authenticity. I'll give you some time to figure that one out yourself...
