The controversial 1980 Olympia.
The Pros were 'so outraged' about Arnold's victory they decreed that they would boycott the following 1981 Olympia!
Guess what? They didn't. Only that fruit-loop-Mentzer followed through and stayed home and got wasted on Jack Daniels.
Hahaahaha. Nothing has changed. The Pros still havent got nut-sacks!
-
Almost all of the top pros sat out the Pro Universe that Arnold promoted about a month after the '80 Olympia and the next year, Frank Zane, Boyer Coe, Mike Mentzer all sat out the '81 Olympia.

Mentzer, and Boyer Coe both sat out the 81 O you retard-they were two of the biggest names in BBing then.

The 1980 Olympia was a deserved victory for Arnold.
However, the coke-head-Mentzer didn't see it that way! He spiralled into a state of bitterness.
Crazy Mike became obsessed with the hating of Arnold. His every thought was consumed with ways he could act vengeance upon his arch enemy.
Well, that did him good. Mentzer died full of hate and rage.
And yes, Arnold is still alive and must go down as the most successful and driven man on the planet!
Hahahahhaha. Mentzer should have learnt the lessons of love and not hate!

This chain smoking alcoholic had quite a temper.
Mike had an internal ugliness. His nasty smile and sarcastic humour made him creepy and unlikeable.
Thank Christ he found Ayn Rand and that crazy philosphy, otherwise Mad Mike would have been dead a lot sooner!

I still don't get why Mentzer reserved all his hate over the 1980 Olympia for Arnold. If he had finished 2nd to Arnold then yeah I could understand where he was coming from but he finished a distant 5th so even if Arnold had never entered Mike would have only been 4th.
And was 5th really so unbearable that he never entered another contest and whined about it for the rest of his life? He was a quitter but acted like quitting was some kind of noble gesture like he was making a righteous stand or something. While on the other hand Samir Bannout finished a pathetic 15th at the 1980 Olympia but worked hard and won the contest a few years later now that's awesome!

Probably expected others to follow suit with the boycott. Never recovered from that embarassment

Mike really hit rock bottom for awhile there, which is pity since if he had stuck with bodybuilding he could have reached the very top and really accomplished something awesome.
Here's a qoute from his wikapedia page. His fans keep having it removed but it keeps popping back up again.
"Mentzer suffered a mental breakdown. According to Peter McGough, editor-in-chief of FLEX magazine, stories began to surface of Mentzer exhibiting some very erratic behavior. Stories of him running naked through the streets, directing traffic, telling prophecies about the end of the world, being arrested by the police numerous times and even waiting for aliens to land were all published in magazines at one point or another. Popular bodybuilding writer Dan Duchaine even suggested that Mentzer was drinking his own urine at the time. Mentzer denied this in a 2001 interview with Ironman magazine. Nonetheless, according to McGough, some of these stories are true. Mentzer was also regularly institutionalized between 1985 up until 1990."
Well at least to his credit he did kick his very serious drug addictions which can't have been easy. So props to Mike for beating those demons.
It's also a pity his brother Ray Mentzer didn't compete more. He had good physique and bigger biceps than Mike.

Mike became a very scary person to be around. Yes, he grew increasingly erratic and irrational. Obviously. his obsessive drug and alcohol addictions didn't help!
It is interesting how so many nutters turn to spirituality for the answers to their demons. They just seem to fail to recognise that the 'true' answers lie within.
It is about taking responsibility and modifying thinking and behavioural patterns. 'NOT' mindlessly adopting some fairytale God and praying to it!
Mike never quite grasped that concept. He spiralled into spiritual and chemical addiction. And like so many, died a lonely, desperate and unhappy man!

Wrong, Zane and Coe, 3rd and 4th places respectively, stayed out.
Do yoiuyr homework, "Hank Wood" my ass.
-
The Ayn Rand Doctrines, in my opinion, were the nail in the coffin for Mike!
-
I heard Mike is thinking about coming out of retirement
-
I have always had issues with Mike's brother Ray.
Ray was an enabler.
He watched and supported his brother's obscene addictions and obsessions.
Ray encouraged all of Mike's twisted behaviours.
Because of this, it is my opinion that Ray is 'partly' responsible for Mikes death!
-
The Mentzer boycott in '81 certainly sent shock waves through the bodybuilding world. What followed was an avalanche in protest from the Pro's....hahahahaahah.
That's what we love about the Pros, they fight for what is right and just. They believe in abiding by laws and fighting to put an end to corruption.
Because of their fearlessness and dedication back then, we can now enjoy a fair and corruption-free sport today!!!!!
-
Bottom line, Mentzer became a symbol for everything that is corrupt and poisonous about this sport.
The industry to this day, has not learnt its lesson.
Hence, one can only assume, that the crazed and confused Mentzer died for nothing!
-
i have allways wondered why they died at the same time, Ray only one day after or something like that?
