A famed and feared amateur boxer, Povetkin´s career has been second to none. He has won two European and one World title and also triumphed at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. The Tsar is now eagerly awaiting the highly-anticipated showdown with Klitschko. In order to set up the world title clash, he needed less fights than the legendary Mike Tyson, who became the youngest champ of all time in his 27th bout.

He may not look like much, but Alexsander Povetkin is a super-heavyweight gold medalist with an iron chin and undefeated record.
On his impending fight with the much taller Klitschko:
“I am waiting for you, Klitschko, you can´t hide any longer.”
-
what is all this gibberish?
-
Sorry I don't speak Italian. :-\
-
Great, another guy whose last name we can't pronounce.
-
for super heavyweights, i've never seen any that look like boxers, they all look like slightly overweight guys. not that he's not big, but if i saw him in the street i'd never think he was a world champion boxer. do they just not do any sort of bulking up?
-
Looks very good but I worry about his defence, how would he do against the current World champion I wonder?
Also, his brother has come out of retirement to fight Sam Peter.....Vitali is better than Wlad
-
hhhaaaaa comparing him to TYSON is laughable....
he does look quite good though... and as BB1234 said .... need to wait and see if this guy can take a hit and go the distance
and the title.........
greatest boxer the world has ever seen............lol far from it ;)
-
Ridiculous. He's not even the best heavyweight right now. The greatest boxer the world has ever seen is Sugar Ray Robinson. You know nothing about boxing

haha yep Robinson is right up there... hes top 5 for me... ;)
have to laugh at "greatest boxer the world has EVER seen" again....... LOOOOOL

Good points about his defence.
His fighting style is reminiscent of Rocky Marciano.
As far as amateur records go, shit, you can't get much better than Povetkin.
He's a 4-TIME olympic gold medalist in the Super-Heavies.
P.S. - Tyson is highly overrated in the grand scheme of things.

I agree with this but Tyson would still beat that guy nevertheless

I agree that it would be an exciting fight.
It's easy to romanticise the old greats.
-
His style is not even close to Marciano's at all. Povetkin has the typical pawing jab eastern-euro style with slow plodding footowork. Marciano was a swarmer with huge heart. Povetkin is garbage imo. He's a decent fighter but he went 'life and death' with Eddie Chambers. Wladimir would defeat him with ease.

i disagree..... among people who actually know boxing , Tyson is not overrated nor underrated
Tyson is one of thee best KO artists ever and also one of the thee best fighters ever
also the fastest heavyweight ever....

Yeah, he's garbage, yet he's won the gold medal in boxing four times.
He's only started competing as a serious professional somewhat recently.
Time will tell how good he really is; judging from what I've seen, he's amazing.
Doesn't look plodding or slow at all; this guy goes in for the kill.
-
Getting gold in the current amateur system means fuck all. It's pretty much "fistic fencing" with horrible judging. Povetkin is talented but he will fail when matched against Wlad and others.
And also, educate yourself. Here is the Ring Magazine's list of the 80 greatest fighters of the past 80 years. Please never mention Povetkin being "the best ever" again. I do have some quibbles with this list though. Sam Langford, and Charley Burley should be ranked much higher, and Hearns should definetly be ranked above Galaxy who is an overrated asian fighter. But besides that it is a fairly solid list.

No, wrong; people that really know boxing can't name one real competitor Mike Tyson beat.
Anyone can be a "KO ARTIST" fighting a bunch of "tomato cans" (Mike's own words);
shit, Butterbean made a career out of it.
-
Also I'd have Monzon in at least the top 10. Him or Harry Greb are the greatest middleweights of all time.
-
Tyson was not one of the best ko artists. He had excellent power but he wasn't one of the greatest punches pound 4 pound that lived.

The Olympic judging is horrible?
Compared to what...
professional boxing judging?
hahahaha.
-
Getting gold in the current amateur system means fuck all...

::)
-
Did you even watch the Olympics? The scoring changed after Roy Jones JR was blatantly robbed of a gold medal in Korea. Now the scoring is based on judges sitting at ringside who hit a button every time they see a punch land using the white area of the glove. 3 of the 5 judges have to hit the button within 1 second for the punch to be scored. This leads to a piss-poor throw a jab and run style. The amateur system has really went downhill and does nothing to prepare fighters for the pro's. Professional judging as bad as it may seem at times at least has some credence with the 10 point must system.
-

tyson was of course one of the best KO artists ever... to say otherwise would be stupid
i agree that he was not the hardest hitter pound for pound
-
He was a hard hitting heavyweight. But guys like Earnie Shavers, Joe Louis, George Foreman, and even Dempsey would have to be ranked above him as ko artists imo. That still leaves him with pretty damn good company though
-
Tyson's infamy is bigger and badder than his boxing talent;
indeed, many promoters have gotten rich pushing his street-tough "KO artist" image.
The sad thing is, once faced with real competition in the form of one Evander Holyfield,
he was exposed for being the overrated hype machine he was.
No need to mention his embarrassing loss to Buster "never-heard-of-him-prior" Douglas.
Since Tyson has not even the skill to beat a real Olympic Bronze medalist like Evander,
he doesn't deserve mention in a thread about real Olympic GOLD medalist like Povetkin.

I didn't watch the Olympics; I made a thread about how boring it all is.
The fact that Povetkin can earn a gold medal in 'fist-fencing' despite his 'doughy' body-type indicates he must be fast as hell.
His supreme speed, combined with the knockout power he's demonstrated as a professional is an unbeatable combination.
I predict that Povetkin will handily defeat all challengers.

hahhaha have u been smoking heroin again?
tyson's head has always been fucked up.... and by the time he fought evander his head wasnt in boxing anymore.... if he was a mentally normal person he would have done a lot better ...
nothing to do with skill my friend .... tyson had all the tools and he proved this a good few times
and u cannot base how good a fighter someone is by the numbers .... 4 golds and bla bla bla .... its about what he can do in the pro ring that matters..... the amateur career just gives u a rough idea how the fighter is gonna do as a pro
i hate it when people look at the personality and not the athlete and i think ur a classic case of that...

So you're saying Tyson was like the dumb kid in school who's teachers always told his parents at conference "he has the potential and the tools; he just doesn't apply himself" so that the parents didn't feel bad about their little waste of spooge? If that's what you're telling me, fine; otherwise, well, you're just wrong.
PS- it is YOU that is looking at the personality and not the athlete. Clearly you are another Tyson sycophant;
sucked in by the 'bad-boy' image hype machine.
-
Also, when Tyson fought Evander, "THE REAL DEAL" was already an old man past his prime.
You probably think a prime Tyson (when he beat so many "Tomato Cans") could beat old man Evander;
but that can't be proven.
The fact remains, old man Evander soundly defeated Mike Tyson TWICE,
and everyone (including you) thought Tyson was going to win back then.
But not me.
Their styles don't match up well.
Evander was a real boxer's boxer.
He's an Olympic bronze medalist.
-
“I am waiting for you, Klitschko, you can´t hide any longer.”
met him and thompson in hamburg....
klitschko... TALL AS SHIT... looks like an actual bodybuilder...
i think klitscho owns onyones ass right now...
-
gay fucking music. I'm no boxing expert but the guy don't look like much to me. He hit several of those guys really good and did not even knock them down
-
why do all getbig boxing topics end in disccusions about mike tyson
-
....
-
Heavy weight boxing has been shitty for the last 5 years. What happened to these kinda fights?
It's not wonder MMA is smashing boxing in PPV buyrates. HW likes this are pretty amazing!
-
Tyson's prime was between 86'-88'.
Holyfield's prime was early 90's.
The difference is that Holyfield was still a good boxer and still had some of the tools that made him great. By the mid to late 90's Tyson was a shell of his former self and was just a slugger.
What made Tyson so incredible in his prime wasn't only his KO power, but his defense and head movement. He lost that by the early 90's.
-
between the Ukraine and Russia is a lot of rivality, so i´d like to see the fight Klitschko vs. Povetkin. I think this fight will take place in Germany or in the US.
P.s. with that top 80 list i can´t agree.....Undefeated/Undisputed Champ Joe Calzaghe for example is missing on that list
