MOSCOW - Two Russian strategic bombers landed in Venezuela on Wednesday as part of military maneuvers, the government said, announcing an unprecendented deployment to the territory of a new ally at a time of increasingly tense relations with the U.S.
Russia's Defense Ministry said the two Tu-160 bombers flew to Venezuela on a training mission. It said in a statement carried by the Russian news wires that the planes will conduct training flights over neutral waters over the next few days before heading back to Russia.
Also Wednesday, NATO said it ended a routine exercise by four naval ships in the Black Sea. Russia had denounced the exercise as part of a Western military buildup sparked by the Georgia conflict.
The alliance said the four ships — U.S. frigate USS Taylor and three similar vessels from Spain, Germany and Poland — were moving back to the Mediterranean Sea after the 18-day mission.
In Moscow, Defense Ministry spokesman Alexander Drobyshevsky refused to say how long the Venezuela deployment will last or say whether the planes carried any weapons.
The military said NATO fighters escorted the two Russian bombers on their way to Venezuela.
The apparently retaliatory move follows the U.S. deployment of warships to deliver aid to the former Soviet nation of Georgia, barely a month after Russian armor and aircraft crushed the Georgian military in a five-day war.
Earlier this week, Russia said it will send a naval squadron and long-range patrol planes to Venezuela in November for a joint military exercise in the Caribbean.
The deployment of planes will be certain to anger Washington. Relations between the U.S. and Russia have been badly strained by the short war last month between Russia and U.S.-allied Georgia.

not sure why you phrase it like that. Every indication is that we backed them into a corner that doesn't leave a lot of options but this. Gorbachev is right, we squandered an opportunity after the fall of the soviet union. The last 8 years being the worst, backing out of missile treaties pushing into places like Georgia and getting our puppets in power. pushing these missile plans and nato. who's looking like the aggressor?... Not saying Russia is innocent, just that the course could have been different. We're heading into cold war II. I can't help but notice the neocons came to power in cold war I and they view that period as their glory years. They probably miss it. They believe America has to have a foe that ties the country together in a greater fight, good vs. evil. The cold war being their greatest triumph.

Oh wait.....and yes while Russia has done a few things, give me a break......all those pictures of them bombing the shit out of the Georgian capital...folks that was supposed to be precision bombing. They suck, they have a huge rusting military. Yes in few years they could be a relative threat, with their petro dollars etc...but they are much more dangerous locally, not globally. Two bombers, without refuelers, AWACS, fighter escort are near worthless. Of all the things we're really good at, we're really really really good at knocking ur shit down, sinking ur shit, and jamming ur shit. I don't believe we'd even need to send any manned aircraft to sink the vaunted Venezuelan navy. Its easier to do that then take down a small village sitting on some Afghan mountain.

Venezuela and the US were friends for many years. I hope it goes back to that soon. Chavez is not as smart as Castro, and he is already making a lot of Venezuelans angry, even those who support him. If he doesn't watch it, he'll get overthrown by his own people.

This is what heppened to the last Venezuelan dictator, Pérez Jiménez’s, in 1957.
Pérez Jiménez’s illegitimacy was so patent that some officers were conspiring to overthrow him. There was also some cautious civilian clandestine agitation. On the last day of 1957, a military uprising coordinated by officers of air and tank forces struck, but the coordination was not that good. The air force rebels flew over Caracas and dropped randomly some bombs while a commander started out from Maracay with a column of tanks. Somehow the signals got crossed, the tanks turned back, and the pilots fled the country. These officers probably thought that Pérez Jiménez would turn tail in the face of this demonstration, but the bulk of the armed forces remained loyal. However, this show of defiance did set off a sequence of events which eventually made Pérez Jiménez fear for his political survival.
The underground civilian opponents started goading the people in Caracas, where they needed little goading and were out in the streets whenever and wherever they could. The repressive secret police rounded up all civilian suspects, but this was like trying to do the little Dutch boy trick. The popular resistance to the government was not just a pardo thing and reached to all levels of society. The navy had taken a non-committal attitude in a situation where its guns were not of any service. It was not in on any conspiracy. There were signs of restiveness in the land forces with some officers working to rules, so to speak, but there was not at any time a military insurrection. But the crowds were getting bigger and bigger. Finally, with various suitcases stuffed with dollars, Pérez Jiménez took off in his private DC-3 and sought refuge in the Dominican Republic, where his resilient colleague, Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, had been ruling since 1930.

I do recall many Democrats saying that shit last election, hence my statement is a valid one. Please don't take all of my posts so literally, there is not going to be a mass exodus of Democrats because they rarely do as they say.
