Over the last few weeks a struggle has played itself out between religious conservatives and the corporate leadership of ABC-owned ESPN. Dana Jacobson, anchor of ESPN’s “First Take,” let go a drunken blue streak at a bawdy roast for Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic of ESPN’s popular “Mike & Mike in the Morning” radio show. For people of the Christian faith, it would be hard to imagine anything worse than what Jacobson reportedly said: “f-ck Notre Dame,” “f-ck Touchdown Jesus” (referring to a mural at Notre Dame) and, finally, “f-ck Jesus.” ESPN suspended Jacobson for one week without pay. After a hollow apology, she is back on the air. When confronted with the fact that other celebrities, such as Don Imus, have been taken off the air for months for similar offenses, ESPN is recalcitrant. They will not discuss punishing Jacobson further.
The lesson learned from this episode is one conservative Christians have come to expect — there is one standard for offending Christians and another for all other groups. ESPN disputes Jacobson’s exact words, but will not deny she said them or something similar. ESPN argues Jacobson’s comments were directed against Notre Dame’s football program. So if Jacobson had attacked the football program at Grambling State University, a black college, by cursing Martin Luther King Jr., would she still have her job?
For Christians of all races this is the most egregious kind of offense because Jesus Christ is the object of their devotion as their Divine Savior. ESPN just does not understand that religious convictions are as profound as racial identity, or more so. Her intoxication is supposed to mitigate her words, but this did not help Mel Gibson’s plight when he made his anti-Semitic comments to police. But it was a roast, one might say, and everyone knows that a roast can get raunchy. Why did ESPN allow itself to be associated with such suspect activities? And when did the shocking, the obscene and the vulgar replace wit, subtlety and class? Apparently, no one told Jacobson that the person getting roasted was not Jesus. What’s the lesson here? Perhaps we need return to a culture of respect for all employees, not just the cool, naughty ones. Here are some simple tests for moral clarity: Would your mother, wife or daughter slap you for having brought her to such an event? Would you as a child have gotten your mouth washed out with soap for such language? In the future, let “Mike & Mike” be roasted by their friends in an appropriate venue, like a middle-school playground or a seedy bar, but let the corporate-sponsored Christian-bashing end.

CHRISTIANS have been on the giving end of religious persecution for most of their existence. The Romans threw a few to the lions for a few years....so what! I think they made up for it pretty well with the crusades and the thumbprint the Holy Roman Empire made. Or the various inquisitions, or the mission work they managed to do in Africa or South America by "converting" natives. Or the witch trials......shall I continue..
I think overall the Christians have had it pretty good throughout history as far a persecution goes. I think if anyone has a complaint chit to wave around....it should be the Jews. But, if we Americans have it our way....Muslims with be the Jews of the 21st Century ::)

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A judge on Monday ordered an investigation into the whereabouts of Casey Kasem after an attorney for the ailing radio personality's wife said the former "Top 40" host had been removed from the country.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Daniel S. Murphy ordered a court investigator and adult protective services to find out where Kasem is being treated and report back to the court. Kasem, 82, suffers from advanced Parkinson's disease, can no longer speak and has been in various medical facilities chosen by his wife, Jean Kasem.
Casey Kasem's children have complained that they have been unable to see their father in accordance with an agreement with their stepmother. Daughter Kerri Kasem had sought a temporary conservatorship and was appointed her father's temporary caretaker on Monday. Her attorney, Troy Martin, said the family believes the entertainer has been taken to an Indian reservation in Washington state.
Murphy's order came after Craig Marcus, an attorney who appeared on Jean Kasem's behalf at Monday's hearing, said he did not know where the radio personality was but knew that he had been removed from the country.
"I have no idea where he is," Marcus said.
The revelation brought stunned protests from Murphy and two of Casey Kasem's daughters, two of the entertainer's three children from a previous marriage.
"Your statements concern me even more," the judge told Marcus, who declined to comment after the hearing.
Marcus said in court that Jean Kasem had every right to move her husband as she saw fit.
Murphy appointed a doctor to look into Casey Kasem's care and ordered a court-appointed attorney to find out his whereabouts as soon as possible.
Casey Kasem gained fame with his radio music countdown shows, "American Top 40" and "Casey's Top 40," and was the voice of Shaggy in the cartoon "Scooby Doo."

Kasem was an island of calm in swirl of pop music
LOS ANGELES (AP) — In pop culture, Casey Kasem was as sweet and dependable as a glass of warm milk and a plate of chocolate chip cookies, which only made the ugliness of his last few years of life seem more bizarre and tragic.
The radio host of "American Top 40" and voice of animated television characters like Scooby-Doo's sidekick Shaggy died Sunday morning at a hospital in Gig Harbor, Washington. He was 82. He suffered from a form of dementia, and his three adult children from his first wife fought a bitter legal battle with Kasem's second wife, Jean, over control of his health care in his final months.
That made Kasem a fixture on news outlets that feed on the sleazier side of celebrity life at a time when it wasn't clear he was aware of it or even able to understand.
This wouldn't seem all that remarkable for a bad-behaving pop star or actor who shed spouses with the frequency of changing characters. But this was Casey Kasem, whose work epitomized the gentler, romantic side of pop culture, of a time when stars were admired for their celebrity and worshipped for their talent.
"American Top 40," with Kasem's soft, homey voice counting down the hits, was a refuge from shock jocks or the screaming big-city radio voices. It was dependable, broadcast on some 1,000 stations at its peak, so if you were driving in Connecticut or Kansas, California or Kentucky, you could always take a measure of the pop charts with Casey.
Kasem weaved stories around the songs, anecdotes about interactions with fans or gee-whiz tales about how stars got their starts. Seldom was heard a discouraging word, unless it was a starting point for a narrative about coming back from hardship, the darkness before the dawn.
Interspersed in the countdowns were the long-distance dedications, songs played for a long-lost or distant lover in the hope a heart would be stirred. You'd wince at some of the hokey song selections, but only the truly cynic would laugh at the emotion that spilled out of the letters Kasem read.
At the end of the show, always, would come Kasem's signature words of advice: "Keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars."
On the first "American Top 40" in July 1970, Kasem counted down to Three Dog Night's "Mama Told Me Not to Come" at the No. 1 spot. As the years went on, Kasem progressed through disco and punk, arena rock and rap. All were welcome under Casey's big tent.
Kasem was of Lebanese descent, born in Detroit as Kemal Amin Kasem, and he spoke out on issues promoting greater understanding of Arab-Americans throughout his life. He made his name as a disc jockey, and when his career blossomed in the Los Angeles area, he took on other voice work. He was Robin in the animated "Batman" series. He once said his work on "Scooby-Doo" would outlast anything he did.
He was succeeded at "American Top 40" in 2004 by Ryan Seacrest, a fan who said he used to imitate Kasem counting down the hits when he was a boy.
"Scooby-Doo" may last longer, but we'll bet Kasem will most be remembered for "American Top 40" and his place in the continuum of pop music accounting, from "American Bandstand" to "Soul Train," ''Total Request Live" to Spotify playlists.
Hard feelings being what they are, it's difficult to imagine the fight between the people Kasem is leaving behind will simply end with his death. Kasem, at least, is at peace.
And instead of thinking about squabbling, his fans can imagine what it would have sounded like to hear Casey Kasem counting down to John Legend, Pharrell Williams and Iggy Azalea.
