Title: started woking out again after almos 2 years, is muscle memory still there?
Post by: Cromespyder on September 11, 2008, 02:02:14 PM
well, after about 21 months of not working out i got a gym membership and started working out again. im 6 feet tall and when i stopped lifting i was 255lbs at around 12%bf, now im at about 200lbs/probably 18% bodyfat, maybe a bit more. i worked out for about 4 years straight before my lay off. do you think my 'muscle memory' is gone and ill have to work my way up like i did before?
last night was my first work out, my max lists were 60lb dumbells on flat bench for 7 1/2 reps, 40lb dumbels on the incline for 8 reps, flys with the 30lb dumbells. they did some tri pushdowns. used to use the 140s on the flat bench for a good  reps. when i got home i took a shower and couldnt even lift my arm up to brush my teeth.  im going to try and get some pics up on here and update my progress

thanks for the reply. how long did it take you to get back to your former self? just curious.

back in early january 07 i stopped working ot cause i was really busy with work..started partying, eating what i want, when i want(not eery three hours) and just devolved and lost all motivation/work ethic.  now ive finally gotten fed up with drugs/drinking/looking like dogshit, been clean for 2 months and my motivation is back, ready to get back into the zone and give it 100%.  with me its all or nothing

It will come back, and i bet you'll make better gains than before.  My buddy took off close to a year, and he got back quickly.  His body responded well after the rest.

I have taken long time between workouts lately.  I could take 6 months off and barely be able to bench 225 for 8.  Within 3 weeks I was doing 305 for 8.  In a couple months I was doing supersets on the bench and incline with 305 for 8 fairly easy.  One thing everyone notices is my muscle memory.  I am glad it is there cause if I was this weak all the time I probably would never go in the gym.

cool. i think even if my strength goes up quick, ill limit myself cause i want my joints/tendons to adapt to the weight

it took me a while to get up the guts/motivation to go to the gym. moreso the motivation part, over the 21 months lay off i kept telling myself id get back in the gym. but i was just too in the lazy/partying mindset. good luck bro

i feel like a loser going to the gym and lifting puny weights, im not going to say to people 'yeah i used to be big, i used to lift this and that' cause i assume people will just be rolling their eyes in the back of their head like 'yeah, ok' and think im lying.  so im just keeping to myself, lifting, staying consistent, then i can get back the confidence i used to have in the gym.
its eerie though, when i first waked into the gym i was lost, once i started working out i was thinking yeah i remember this and how i used to love it, this is me, lifting heavy, being big. i love the gym and now i cant belive i was away for so long, its all coming back to me, im getting back in the zone.

I can help you with your posture by telling you to clean up your room and get that shit off the floor, you're going to trip and hit your head!

My advice is to go easy over the next few months. Strength will come back fast -- too fast for your weakened tendons. You'll feel ready to press three plates, but your tendons won't. That's when you get hurt and you're back on the sidelines for a year.

Just take it easy. Rome wasn't built in a day. Show some discipline, progress pound by pound on the lifts in very measurable increments, and you'll find the size again. Rush it, and I'll take a bet you tear something in six months or less. Lots of guys do it, and it's totally preventable.
i definitly plan to follow your advice, it will be hard to hold back though, like i said with me its all or nothing!
i think modest increaes of 2.5-5lbs/workout should be good enough

i never understood this whole "muscle memory" shit.

If u lifted for 3 years in a row - gained 10- 20 lbs of "muscle" and stop working out for 2 years.

Suddenly u go back and achieve to the same level "sooner" than before? I dont think thats necessarily accurate and universal. There are tons of factors that go into play.

in my experience you will definitely see a major change in about 3 weeks give or take... but yes take it easy at first the tendon soreness is much worse in the beginning compared to actual muscle soreness, and they definitely dont snap back in conditioning the way your muscle tissue does.  if you stick to it and your diet and rest is right you can be close to what you were before within 3 months or so...

I am only using myself as an example here, with basically being out of the gym up to a year give or take an occasional workout once in a great while.... I had a slight abdominal tear and gave it plenty of time to heal up and didnt start back in the gym til I saw it was all good after getting a cat scan done.

i also forgot, that one of the reasons i quit working out for a bit was sciatic nerve and rotator cuff problems..i figured a little time off would do me some good

now whats wierd is, my pecs look/feel twice as big as they were before my workout yesterday. i wonder whats up with thta, doubt 'muscle' can grow quite that fast.

just a update:
im up 8 lbs this week. could it possibly be all muscle?? i dont see how you could gain that fast. i know i definitly didnt put on 8 lbs of fat

did back:
dead lifted 225x10 but it hurt my hands way too much so i had to lighten the weights.  never experience such pain in my hands from lifting, i must just not be used to it yet. im going to use straps next time.
i did squats, 205x 12
did shoulder presses, managed to use the 40lb dumbells for 10 reps.

so far so good.

im going to post some new pics once i get noticible progress

Tip:
If you stop training for extended periods of time and eat like shit, you will loose muscle and get fat.

Hope this helps.

P.S. Yes, fortunatly you will gain it all back very quickly.  Dont worry about poundages at first.  Just get your fat ass back in the gym.

I think muscle memory comes back very quickly. You really dont have too eat as much to get the size back in comparison to what it took to get there. Muscle fullness comes backvery quickly and then the dense muscle should follow. As far as the strength goes, to me certain things are kind of like riding a bike where there are some lifts you alway stay decent at. These layoffs happen to me now if I get injured or sick and they used to happen for 6-7 months a years when I was still in high school due to wrestling season and summer time. I have never taken 2 years off but I could take 3 - 4 months off and always be able to bench 315 for atleast one rep, I could be 20 pounds lighter but mentaly 315 is always doable and therefore I can always do it. I'm always puzzled by guys who loose it all in 2 months, I find it pointless for them to workout to the extreme cause they can loose it easily due to illness or busy life not maiing it worthwhile to spend so many hours in the gym for something so temporary.  If you were really 255 at 12% then you should be able to get to a respectable weight and strength level in no time as you should have good genetics for it. The first few weeks are always a little embarrassing and I always prefer to workout at home during this period. Good luck broskie.

uhhh not really.. my longest layoff was 6 months.. but i definately lost 10-15lbs of muscle, put it all back on in 3~ months + a few more pounds

a lot of that 8 lb. would be glycogen storage. now that you are using your muscle again it will store more muscle fuel. it is intramuscular and will give you an initial strength boost, not unlike creatine loading.

you should take more protein this first month than ever before as you can gain muscle faster than ever before.

i haven't trained in a year, and think i will start soon, so i'll keep you all posted.

rik

im going to post some new pics once i get noticible progress

Good luck broskie.
it took me about 6 months-year to lose most of the muscle ive lost up till now.  im definitly more muscular than when i started bbing at 15 years old though, all my gains were natural. i neglected to mention i did a tbol/anavar cycle but that only helped my strength really, which i maintained after i came off.

I think the cycle you took will aid you even further in reclaiming your former mass. There's a reason you can be called clean but not a natural anymore. You took your physique to a beyond natural point and even though you can not get there again naturaly, muscle memory should be able to take you a little further than what you could as a natty even if just slightly. None of this is based on science just what I have personaly observed at gyms.

i dont know if i misread your post, but i took that cycle before i stopped working out 2 yrs ago..not recently.im not so sure it would be a good idea to just cycle right off the bat, since i just started working out a month ago. i plan to stay natty for at least 6 months-yr. im considering doing some gh though, just 2-3iu/day.
anyway, ill probably post some pics in a month or so in the pics section.

You could take 50 Dbol a day and 100 IU's of GH and slin, and you still wont crack the buck 50 barrier you little twink.

No bro I was just saying that the old cycle you took helps your muscle memory gains even further, just cause you went beyond what you were naturaly suposed to...that's all, I was not trying to tell you to juice after being back in the gym a couple of months lol
