Try santa monica, culver city, or west hollywood. These places aint cheap but you want to survive in a decent
area. Imo I would pick santa monica. Rent probably will run at 2k a month. Condos are around 500k and Houses 1
million. The homeless people shouldnt worry you too much. Watch out for trannies around that area though. :-X
They have the best restaurants and women. You can ride or walk to Venice or Malibu. Good luck

Welcome to 1980.

Move to Culver City as was previously mentioned... If you aren't combined pulling down at least 150K it's going to be a bitch finding anything decent in Venice in your price range.
I wouldn't live here in the Marina if it wasn't for the Company footing the bill I'm sure.

Venice is expensive when you're within 5 blocks of the ocean. inland is cheaper, but not safe. 2-3 miles inland is cheaper and safer.

Pack all your stuff in the car and drive to Venice. Tell your friends and family you're chasing the dream. Try to get a job at the front desk at Gold's. You'll probably have to do some gay posing or stuff like that. Bathe in Burger King bathrooms and find a rich sugar daddy to buy your gear and compete in the NPC. Work your way up at Gold's to a
drug dealer P.T. win the Nationals and you'll be Mr.O by 2012. Good luck

Venice is a dump, why anyone would want to live there is beyond me. Santa Monica or Marina Del Ray would be better choices. Culver City is just east of Venice and cheaper, but only slightly better of an area. You can also sometimes find some reasonable houses for rent in Malibu, $5-6k a month for 3 bedrooms is pretty average.

Venice is no longer cheap as it was in the 90's. It is one of the most expensive areas in LA. Expect to pay $1000 plus a month for a studio apt. I know this for a fact as I am currently involved in real estate in Venice. Try Mar Vista, Palms, Culver City. They are all near venice. But they are way diferent than venice and not as nice. Good luck....Venice is a tough one these days.

Are there any cheap, safe places to live in the LA area? I had no idea it was that expensive to live out there.

there are many safe places where you can find 2 bedroom apartments for $1500. sometimes you can find rooms in houses for $500.

of course it helps to know the geography (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_districts_and_neighborhoods_of_Los_Angeles). Here is another (http://www.laalmanac.com/LA/lamap2.htm).
Stolen (and then cropped to be under 300 kb) from flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/iancmcc/217920082/sizes/o/): Venice is just below Santa Monica. below that is Marina Del Rey, then Playa Del Rey, then Westchester, then LAX, then El Segundo. Right-click (ctrl-click on a mac) to see big pic. Note there is a mountain range running west to east separating the San Fernando Valley from the LA basin.
