Legislation Alert: California REAL ID
September 17th, 2008 by Matt Hawes
SB 60, the Real ID Act of 2007, recently passed the California State Assembly (it passed the California Senate in 2007).  This act would bring California driver’s licenses into compliance with the REAL ID Act of 2005, which essentially mandates national id cards for all Americans.  (If you’re unfamiliar with the REAL ID, check out Dr. Paul’s comments from 2005 here and here.)

Governor Schwarzenegger has until Sept. 29th to veto SB 60 before it becomes law.  It’s been great to see states like Montana stand up to the federal government and oppose this national id, and it would be an incredible victory for the liberty movement if Governor Schwarzenegger would veto this bill.

But he needs to hear from the people of California.  So if you’re out in the Golden State, contact the Governor and urge him to reject SB 60.  Check out his contact page for phone numbers, fax, and email.

Why should people oppose a national ID card ?!? I think it's a great idea!  the government is working on something similar in Canada, to tie in driver's license, Id, social insurance number, health card all into one card.

If you want your government controlling every aspect of your life go ahead get a national ID card. Its just another way for our government to keep track of our every move and more people should stand up against these acts the fed gov't is taking to control us. If you think your free in america you are sadly mistaken my friend.

what people don't usually know about Real ID is that homeland security was given a blank check on what to require on real ID.  That means they can go with anything they want.  In politics, you never see anyone go for the whole enchilada at once, it's always gradual.  Ask the NRA, they understand this concept well and have used it many times for support--because it's true.  you hand them real ID now with a blank slate, in 10 years that card will have more info on it than you ever thought of.  medical, criminal, DNA, financial etc etc...  Never ever ever give the government a blank check to fill it...  This should be universal regardless of party.

true, you're watched until you make one wrong move, then you realize how easily they can track everything you do.  In live free or die hard they show how easily someone can view all your information (yeah its a movie but a lot of people's records are avaliable online).  Especially with the patriot act, there's really no privacy besides in your own home.
