Barack Obama, who lamented Friday that “we have not managed our federal budget with any kind of discipline,” is nonetheless promising to spend $50 billion on a United Nations anti-poverty program that critics say will drive up American debt.
“The short-term weakness in the capital market is a reflection of long-term problems that we have in our economy,” Obama told reporters in Florida. “We have been loading up enormous amounts of debt.”
Yet Obama and his running mate, Joe Biden, have pledged tens of billions in new spending on a U.N. program that promises cash to poor countries. The program is one of eight sweeping “Millennium Development Goals” the U.N. adopted in 2000.

Here or in Darfur? ::)
Isn't like 2/3 of our domestic budget spent on welfare? I hear Taco Bell is hiring.

50 Billion on poverty is bad? And 1 trillion bailing out the greedy coorp companies is "ok"?
-
Where did he say the money was going to come from?

No one justified the other so I don't know why you're comparring the two.
-
Where did he say the money was going to come from?
start by ending Bush's War which costs 12 BILLION per month. then end Bush/McCain's corporate welfare/tax breaks for the very profitable Oil/Gas companies, which adds BILLIONS more in savings.
hope this helps BB.

Busted, two completely different issues. If there was no bailout, our whole economy could collapse.
We should not be contributing 50 billion to anything outside this country until we are more fiscally sound again.
Obama's spending proposals are very dangerous, particularly in these times.
Yes, we need to draw down troops in Iraq but guess where many are going....Afghanastan. So, the key is to decrease spending. I was glad to hear McCain directly say that on 60 minutes yest. Now, will he follow through...
-
yeah, obama said iraq will very quickly inherit the $3 billion PER WEEK bill that we're spending in iraq.
He'll make them pay for their own war. imagine that. How unpatriotic, huh?
-
Make them pay..he won't make them pay for anything. He can't make them pay if we pull out.

Are there major differences between he and mccain's position on pullout?
Mccain has said out by 2011, correct?
And Iraq is dragging their feet bigtime, they want us out sooner?
-
They know that if we leave to soon, they will fold. We still do way to much for them on all levels.

Yes, lets sacrifice our countries security...good idea. Oil company profits are somewhere around 2-4%. My profits are somewhere around 40-50%.

Hey dip shit.. WE ARE NOT IN DANGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Im so tired of these dumb fucking morons using this scare tactic.
When you walk out of your gym at night to go to your car are you worried about terrorists????
When you go to fill your gas tank are you worried about a terrorists blowing up the gas station?
OUR COUNTRY IS FUCKED UP and we are worried about FIXING IRAQ that had NOTHING TO DO WIT 911... How fucking ignorant are you?

Not really. It all sounds like deficit spending to me.
Regarding the "corporate welfare/tax breaks," raising taxes on business does not help poor people. Increased costs of doing business are passed on to everyone. We all pay for it, regardless of income and net worth.

Wow, please tell us what briefs and security and intel people brief u on a regular basis. U would appear to be well juiced into the system. How many trips overseas have u had. What exactly were u worried about on Sept 10, 2001.

You don't think that spending $3 billion a week on war is deficit spending?
oh brother.

our country's security has NOTHING to do with Iraq.
OK, this is where you and I part company. America's security has EVERYTHING to do with Iraq.
Stop wasting 12 BILLION a month over there, ...you wouldn't be in such a precarious situation.
Global empire is NOT going to happen on Bush's watch, and his & Mccain's attempts to bring it about, will only hasten America's demise.
you're living in a dream world. spin elsewhere Rush Coach.

He's not living in a dream world, ...he's living in the neo-con created nightmare, which will soon extend to his waking hours as well. One day he may wake up and realize how badly the republicans have screwed over the people,
...and his son will utter "Daddy, I wanna be a sectarian community organizer just like my hero President Obama".
Then he'll have a stroke, ...or lock himself in the garage with the engine runnning.

His so is more likley to say I want to be a badass Marine/Naval avaitor like our great and noble president McCain, and kill stupid douchebag ragheads.

Not what I said.

Good point.
This sounds to me like foreign handouts under the guise of being poverty payments. It is unbelievable how much money is wasted on 'poverty'.... Spending money on poverty usually nets a negative return to society as a whole.
The impoverished in the world are the way they are because they cannot function on a level of existance that would allow them to be better than where they are.
Say I have 100 rats. If I feed and provide for all their well-being for a period of time, am I going to have anything better than 100 rats down the road? Am I all of a sudden going to have 100 rats that can do algebra or whatever?
No, you will, in all reality, have 6000 rats. You can bet that 5998 of those rats will be slinking around, looking for the next handout. At that point, the providers will have to decide if A) They want to provide for the 5998 rats, or B) They want to let the natural order of things return to normal, which would basically mean 5898 of the rats would need to be killed/die off.

First off, why are you a paranoid piece of shit?
Secondly, oil companies have been recording record profits quarter after quarter for the last fews years, so come out of your underground bunker and get with the times.

I'm actually more worried about the local thugs and dumb people, than folks from a third world country thousands of miles away.
-
I don't see what the big deal is. $50 billion for poverty is nothing compared to $700 billion for Wall Street. We can always print more. ;D
-
Sure,
This IS America, after all.......
-
Yep, just keep throwing borrowed $ away. Pathetic.
In responce to the above...the countries experiencing the best recent economic growth are China, India and Ireland. What do all three have in common? Lower corporate taxes. Businesses are built where taxes are low. Logical, practical and the way the world works. Obama's desire to increase corporate taxes, employment taxes, payroll taxes and capital gains taxes is a horrible idea for the economic future of this country.
-
It is ironic that the Iraqi's were calling for a timetable but yet seem very comfortable with us there providing their security. Its an attempt at show of national strength...however untrue.
I know its a complicated process but we have got to put more pressure on the Iraqi leaders, having them pay for their own infrastructure & building through oil profits and have a solid plan to cautiously and quietly draw down troops.

How many jobs have been created by the poor?
How many are created by corporations?
I really astounds me that the democrats think taxing the hell out of the upper eschilon of society is a good thing. They are the ones that make the jobs that allow people to progress out of poverty.
Of course, most people who live in poverty want handouts, not opportunity.
