Title: Olympia - Has a non-Weider competitor ever won?
Post by: Boost on September 23, 2008, 12:16:02 PM
Joe Weider's Mr Olympia,

An MD guy winning would mean that FLEX cant feature the athlete in their magazine right.

So is it impossible for an MD guy to win?

Haney was with twin Lab in 1991 lots of ' speculation ' Weider wouldn't allow him to win

Of course not.

You're about 18 years too late. Lee Haney won his last two Olympias, when he was with Twinlab, AND he had his own column in MD back in the early 90s. I believe that was the case, until the magazine underwent a facelift to become either Muscular Development-Fitness-Health (MDFH) or All-Natural Muscular Development (ANMD)

Not to mention that, when Ronnie Coleman won his first Mr. Olympia, he was with MET-Rx.

As far as being with a rival mag, it was almost 20 years.

And that was BEFORE the bitter feud between the two powerhouses today.

Chances of a guy from that team winning?  I sure wouldn't bet the rent check, but that is just my own personal opinion.

But, 20 years ago, this involved both a rival magazine (MD vs. FLEX/Muscle & Fitness) and the supplement companies associated with them (Twinlab vs. Weider).

Some people thought that, given Haney's move to Twinlab, the drug-testing in 1990, and Haney's being on the verge of breaking Arnold Schwarzenegger's record, the "fix" was in the making for Haney to lose. But, he didn't.

the relationship between weider and md has changed tremendously since haney won his last olympia.  ronnie coleman signed a wieder contract after prejudging in 98.

so, i think its safe to say a non wieder athlete will never again win the olympia.

Based on what?

Furthermore, Ronnie Coleman was still with MET-Rx, after he won his first Olympia. For about a month, there were MET-Rx ads with Coleman, in a red MET-Rx jacket, standing over his Sandow. And, he did one MET-Rx-sponsored seminar as Mr. Olympia, before Weider bought out his contract and signed him.

To top it all off, the runner-up in 1998, Flex Wheeler, had left Weider and signed with Biochem. The highest Weider-contracted athlete was Nasser El-Sonbaty, who placed 3rd.
