David Goggins - Chula Vista, CA

[transcripted from a speech given at the San Diego Tri Club meeting April 26, 2007, held at Road Runner Sports.]

I'm nobody special. I've been in the military for about 13 years. I joined the military to push my limits. When I first joined, I couldn't run down to the mailbox. I was into powerlifting and weighed 280 pounds. I used to bench press 435. The guy at the recruiting office looked at me like I didn't have a chance.

After 9/11 hit, I lost some buddies in the war. I wanted to do something for their kids. I started looking for ways to raise money for them. Someone told me there was this ultramarathon race in Death Valley called Badwater [a 135-mile race in 120-degree heat]. I didn't even know what an ultramarathon was. I had never really run in my life. So, I called up the race director of Badwater to find out if he'd let me in. He asked me how many 100-milers I had done. I said, none. Then he asked how many marathons I had done. None, I said. He said I had to have at least one ultramarathon under my belt before he could consider letting me in. This was November [2005]. I had to qualify by January to run Badwater [in June 2006]. So, I started looking for 100 mile races in the area that I could do.

I found one in San Diego and entered it. It was a 24 hour race on a 1-mile course, and you had to run 100 miles in under 24 hours. I told my wife about it and she looked at me like I was crazy. ¿How are you going to do that?¿ she asked me. I didn¿t know, but I knew that I had to if I wanted to get into Badwater.

So, I get into it and felt good for the first 50 miles. And I thought, what's the big deal? 60 miles, still good. Then after 61 miles I never felt so much pain in my life. I just hit a wall. I didn't know anything about nutrition for this kind of race, so I was eating Ritz crackers and Myoplex. It didn't work. At 70 miles my body starts to lock up. I was 12 hours into the race. I walked another 7 miles. I only had 23 miles to go, but I just couldn't go any further. But, I had to. I didn't want to have to do this again, and I was already so far into it. Somehow, I ran to 90 miles and I felt like I was going to die. My feet were broken, I had tendonitis and shin splints. But, I just kept going and got to 100, and then I did one more lap just in case there was a miscount. I finished in 18 hours and 56 minutes and my wife took me home. She had to carry me up the stairs to our home. I was peeing blood.

I had also signed up to do the first Las Vegas Marathon, which was 10 days later. But, after 8 days I could barely walk and I couldn't run. But, we go out there anyway. I had promised to go with my wife and her mother. I figured I could at least walk it. But, then the gun went off, and well, you know what happens when the gun goes off. Something happens inside. I finished that one in 3:08.

So, I called the Badwater director again. And he said that he wasn't sure he could let me in because he had so many people on the list with longer resumes. So I decided to do one more. That was in December. I finished that one and called the Badwater director again. He let me in.

By the time Badwater came around I was in much better shape, but I still didn't really know what I was doing. But, I just kept moving forward and ended up finishing 5th overall. We raised quite a bit of money for the Special Operation Warrior Foundation.

After Badwater, I was looking for another event that I could do to raise more money. Around that time, a friend of mine told me about Ultraman [6.2-mile ocean swim, 261 miles of cycling, and a 52.4-mile run]. I called the race director and she asked me how many Ironmans I had done. None. How many triathlons had I done? None. I hadn't done much swimming. I didn't even own a bike. But, I bugged her and bugged her and bugged her. I told her I was doing it to raise money for the kids. After a while, she let me in.

By this time, I had the running down pretty good, but it got down to 3 weeks before the race and I still didn't have a bike. I borrowed one from a friend and asked him how many miles I should start training. He asked how long the race was. I said, 260. He said, how long do you have to train? I said, 3 weeks. He shook his head and said good luck. So, I started doing 300 miles a week on the bike and swam a few times. There was no tapering. You can't with that little time.

But, then I get to the race and I finished the swim on day one in 12th. But, I was terrified of the bike. I had a bad blowout toward the end of the ride. I'm not a mechanic, so I lost 30 minutes dealing with that. But, I had a spare bike that I had rented from a local shop, except it didn't have clipless pedals. It just had those straps that you put your regular street shoes into. I finished that last part of the ride wearing my Brooks shoes on these flat pedals. People were looking at me like, What are you doing? So, the Ultraman was my first and only triathlon. And I finished 2nd.

With the Special Ops Warrior Foundation's help, we put 266 kids through college last year. And that's what keeps me going. I'll be honest, I don't like running. I don't like biking. I don¿t like swimming. I do it to raise money. But, now that I'm in this sport I want to see how far I can push myself. What makes me tick is that pain you feel when you do these ultramarathons. I love knowing that everyone¿s suffering because I know I can suffer just a little bit more. I can take a lot of pain.

He obviously eats in the morning and eats at lunch as well. It was his workout schedule not his nutritional schedule. Alot of these endurance athletes sleep very little. Dean Karnazes sleeps only 4 hours a night.

WHY?  ???
seriously, this guy is killing himself running no reason  ???
absolutely no reason, I do it to get ripped he does it because he thinks it's fun?
you know what happened to the first guy who ran the marathon?
after which "marathons" were seen as accomplishments
he fell over and DIED
taking punishment is seen as accomplishment? I know a person who drinks 60 beers in one weekend while smoking 8 packs of cigarettes and eating everymeal at mcdonalds, that is also punishment on the body
his body can take more punishment than my body, I give him that ::)

INCREDIBLE, man I love hearing about training and determination like this. And it's true, ATHLETES like this don't require a whole lot of sleep. This guy is so well conditioned, his training is almost automatic and his body (hate to sound cliche') is like a machine. I believe 100% there is no BS to this story.

MuscleM-It's likely he passed it but failed somewhere else in the Pipeline.  It's in First Phase, Week 4, of a 6 month BUD/S training process.  Guys drop from BUD/S (medical, performance, etc) and go back as soon as possible.  If this is the case, the guy has some big balls for going through that punishment 3x.  There's a BUD/S class that were all washed out, I believe in the First Phase too.

Granted all I am doing is working and not training all day, but ask any medical resident how quickly sleep becomes a distant memory.

You can "control/Alt/delete" your current system and rewire it to work on 3 hours of sleep...DMT/5Plus grams of mushrooms/Lsd would be something worth its weight in gold to do such rewiring(with the right frame work leading up to it)...

This guy goggle is brainwashed...Like so many other "soldiers"...I would almost bet the house that we will here some news that this guy has died in the next couple years but like the Tilman death will be a farce...He will simple go deep under ground and be used by the "dark government" that already pwns his ass...

You can "control/Alt/delete" your current system and rewire it to work on 3 hours of sleep...DMT/5Plus grams of mushrooms/Lsd would be something worth its weight in gold to do such rewiring(with the right frame work leading up to it)...

I'm posting this AFTER checking with a good friend of mine, Tim Watson, Pro Triathlete from Vermont who did the ironman and everything in between

I know bull shit when I read it ...

This guy is absolutely lieing his ass off

Let me see :

Fat big dude , never ran before , tries to run 100 mile ./...

he feels good for the first 50 ????????????????

He couldn't fucking walk 50 miles ..what a bunch of crap ... why do people like to exagerate so much ?

I tried running some long distance in my tennis day

My doubles partener , Khaled , at that time, trained to run a marathon ..

he trained for several months, was a pro athlete to begin with, and ran alot and swam 80 lengths 3 times a week ..

he did run it and managed 3 hours and 20 min ...

and this bozo goes @ 280 lbs never run before and manages 50 miles on the first try?

PLEASE DO NOT INSULT OUR INTELIGENCE ...

I'm sure there are some other former athletes here on the board that can second me ...

America loves the lone wolf against all odds type of inspirational shit ...that's why they fabricate them and give them to ya ...

He did acomplish I'm sure what he said but after a lot of hard work folks, not as a walk in ....

By the way .. it takes a long time even to learn the proper nutrition for a 100 mile race ..... those guys eat upwards of 10000 cal a day and they cannot ingest enough food ...

Another posibility is that he is a product of the Superman Project or MK Ultra ... anything's possible ..

Goggins vs Average man:
Average adult male can do 27 pushups, Goggins can do 243.
Average pulse of a healthy adult male is 75 beats a minute, his is 30.
He does 42 hours of aerobic exercise per week.
Average male can do 36 crunches in a minute, he does 106.
Average man has a bf% of 19 he has 4%.

Massive BULLSHIT.

You guys talking trash about Goggins are funny.  You obviously know very little about special operators.  They're a different breed of men, plain and simple.  It would be like your neighborhood basketball player getting on the court with Lebron James, those are two completely different worlds.  Most of these professional warriors thrive on pain and adversity.  It's okay though, keep talking trash.  Just remember, he's training while you're sleeping, surfing the net, drinking beer, and talking trash.
And you ask why Goggins put himself through that torture? Seems crazy huh? "He's gonna die early."  Yeah I'm sure a Navy Seal is worried about dying early.  Get real.  They do things in real life that you'll only ever experience on your Rainbow Six video game.
He's doing all these races to raise money for the children of Fallen Soldiers.  And he's already raised over half a million dollars for these children.  How can you not applaud that?
Anyways, I'll stop ranting, it just sickens me when people are out there doing something positive and they receive a whole bunch of criticism.  Go spend a week or two with some of these elite units and I dare you to still doubt their intestinal fortitude..

You're right.  Running 135 Miles in Death Valley in the Middle of July isn't the best way to train for an operation.  I couldn't agree with you more.  But these runs aren't about training for combat, they're about raising money for a good cause.  Soldiers are constantly finding new ways to challenge themselves.  Here's another example: http://www.total-mma.com/2008/01/25/tim-kennedy-army-strong/

The stuff he has done is absolutely awesome...With that said, what separates us from the animals is the ability to make massive amounts of money...His Egostic mind is what makes him want to run over 100 miles(combined with the animal that is inside him)...I will be truly impressed if he to Parlay that into building an empire of millions of dollars along never losing his family...
