ABC News' Nitya Venkataraman Reports: Former President Bill Clinton defended Sen. John McCain's request to delay the first presidential debate, saying McCain did it in "good faith" and pushed organizers to reserve time for economy talk during the debate if the Friday plans move forward.
Appearing on Good Morning America Thursday, Clinton told ABC News' Chris Cuomo that McCain's push to postpone the debate would only be a good political move if both candidates agreed. McCain announced on Wednesday that he would "suspend" his presidential campaign to come to Washington to help negotiate a financial bailout bill
"We know he didn't do it because he's afraid because Sen. McCain wanted more debates," Clinton said, adding that he was "encouraged" by the joint statement from McCain and Sen. Barack Obama.
"You can put it off a few days the problem is it's hard to reschedule those things," Clinton said, "I presume he did that in good faith since I know he wanted -- I remember he asked for more debates to go all around the country and so I don't think we ought to overly parse that."
If the debate moves forward as planned for Friday night, Clinton says "they should be able to talk about this some of the debate because it is a security issue."
The former president thought Bush's address Wednesday night on the economic crisis had a "positive reaction".
"I thought it was the clearest statement of why we're in the fix we're in, at least what the nature of it is and why some national action is needed," Clinton said.
He said that both Democrats and Republicans "should move as quickly as they can" on the president's economic rescue plan but that both parties "want to know exactly how this $700 billion is going to be invested..to stabilize the system."
President Bush's bipartisan meeting on the economic crisis will take place at 4pm at the White House, both Obama and McCain will be in attendance.

All this bullshit about McCain being afraid.....sorry John McCain is not afraid of a been no where done nothing junior senator from Ill. He asked Obama to debate him all through the summer nothing...and 240 don't give me that 4th of July shit. Nobody will watch that crap. This debate would have been on foreign policy, a debate McCain will wipe the floor with Obama, on. Delaying 2-3 days makes no difference.
Obama is a professional office seeker, he's done nothing else of any substance. McCain is working, doing his job...while Obama is on call.
-
This has about the same impact as the Palin selection. The Obama campaign (media included) is now scrambling to stay on top with the lead that they've enjoyed this week.

Did you miss the memo? Mccain wants to replace the VP debate with this debate. This allows him to keep Palin from the debate.
Maybe he's not scared. Maybe he's scared Palin will melt.
-
Dude they didn't expect it at all...Oreilly had the guy who runs realclearpolitics.com on yesterday and he explained some of the polls, how they work and what they see day to day.....he thought that this would help McCain and that Obama seemed unprepared for the move. Further, had Obama agreed, no harm would have come to Obama. His people have made some curious moves, Biden, unprepeared for Palin, and then their reaction to it.
240.....I don't care about Palin, u guys are all about Palin. Biden is worse then she is gaffe wise....in fact there are very few in league with him gaffe wise. U guys all think politics started sometime in 2007 or something.

Obama will be there today, and tomorrow he will be ready to debate. Why won't McCain?
Washington has already dropped hints they don't want McCain there and he isn't needed.

Mccain STILL hasn't joined congress on the bill. They're done with it - working out final detail now - Mccain didn't contribute.
But he'll show up to put his name on top.
-
240 ur in DC...hey guys 240's in DC right in thhe middle of whats going on. ::)
Much like when u guys talk about the war, u don't really know what the hells going on....only what u get off the net. Obama was caught off guard and has now been summoned back to DC to do his fucking job...sorry Barry but u have to actually work instead of making flowery speeches. Could they still debate, sure.....would a delay hurt, no. It can only help Obama prepare more.

It's a whole lot easier to debate your opponent when he's not there. :P Smart move on Obama's part. It's no secret that Obama isn't the best debater in the world.
-
It's a bad move by McCain either way.
It demonstrates he's unable to multi-task

Do you think it's a *little* shady that he'd like to reschedule the debate for the VP debate slot, and postpone the VP debate "until some unkonwn futrue date"?
Also, Mccain doesn't even have committee jurisdiction to debate this bill. It's 6 days old now - and nearly complete - and mccain's plane hasn't landed in DC yet.
-

I would call it prioritizing rather than multi-tasking
-
I would call it prioritizing rather than multi-tasking
What aren't people getting?
Mccain isn't working on the bill. They have it nearly complete, and he's not even in DC yet!
The excuse might fly - if he was at the table working on the legislation. instead he's giving speeches this AM, while dems and repubs finalize the details.
-
I would call it prioritizing rather than multi-tasking
So as president he'll not be able to meet his commitments when thing get to rough?
And what IS he prioritizing?
IS McCain on any financial committee? on any banking committee? Memebers of congress have already hinted that he doesn't need to be there.
What is he going to do when he gets there? Not a thing.
He screwed up, tried to pander again, and it back fired.
-

They're completing it today. Mccain still isn't there.
The only 'priority' is postponing the VP debate - and bumping his own debate back a week does that.
He doesn't want Palin onstage for 90 minutes in front of the nation being asked tough questions.

What a coward. What a fvck up.
The erection over Palin is over.
Beyond the make up and the tummy tuck lies the reality.

Yes, brilliant plan by Obama. To set in motion MONTHS ago the first debate for tomorrow and getting McCain to agree to it even though Obama just knew McCan't wouldn't make it to the debate. Obama knew that McCain would be in Washing..... err.... where is McCain again now? Obama just knew that despite Dodd saying having either candidate there was completely unnecessary, that McCan't would still show up and forfeit the debate.
Next thing, news will break that Obama sneakily had McCan't botox job screwed up.
::)
-
mccain landed in DC about the same time the dems and repubs finished their 6-day work marathon and completed the bill.
He'll walk into the room and put his name on top of it, and walk it to the principal's office now.
-
So as president he'll not be able to meet his commitments when thing get to rough?
Is he changing his commitment or is he prioritizing?
And what IS he prioritizing?
Aren't he and Obama senators? If we want to see change in how things are done in Washington, seeing both candidates put the bs of the campaign aside and actually get into some stuff. And to 240's point, can these guys not interact with others in Washington without actually being there?
IS McCain on any financial committee? on any banking committee? Memebrs of congress have already hinted that he doesn't need to be there.
You mean he can't propose any ideas to be presented?
What is he going to do when he gets there? Not a thing.
At least he'll be in good company! ;D
He screwed up, tried to pander again, and it back fired.
You think the Palin decision backfired on McCain?

He's not doing anything, the deal is nearly done. All this was, was a political ploy that has back fired. And it showed a lack of judgment on McCain's part and an inability at the very least to prioritize between what he can be impacting at.

I thought there were some items he wanted added to the proposal. Is that not the case?
-
Nothing has been done.....most republicans don't want this thing to go through as originally stated...McCain had a list of proposals he wanted added.
-

You never seemed concerned when Obama snubbed the military and their families...twice.
You never seemed concerned when McCain offered Obama town hall debates and Obama turned him down.
Where were your posts then???
-
I thought there were some items he wanted added to the proposal. Is that not the case?
Like what?
He needed to be there for that and had to cancel his debate on Friday becuase it?
-

obama never agreed to the debates.
Mccain agreed to them, then backed out.
Big difference. On top of that, obama offered a july 4 debate, but mccain didn't think enough people would watch, and declined it.
he's trying to prevent palin from debating. It's obvious now.
-
240 save ur breath..mm he'll replay some BS about a 4th of July debate that nobody was going to watch. 240 jumped on the Obama bandwagon a few months ago when it looked like he was going to win......
-
Obvious to who........nobody was going to watch that debate so forget it. McCain offered several town hall debates not just one.........more then one....Obama knew full well that McCain is a better debater. And before u give me some bs....he got crushed in the debates with the other Dem candidates so u have no argument.

No Rob, shady is Obama being up to his ass and having his fingerprints all over this economic mess and his hands just as dirty as the heads of Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac who took a $90mil dollar pay out, contributed to Obama and is now a major part of his campaign. You don't think thats shady?

Sure. So is (mccain campaign manager) rick davis getting $15,000 per month until LAST MONTH.
mccain told america all $ stopped in 2006.

Obamas heads and Obama are a major reason why we're having this problem. Don't even think of comapring petty shit like that......unfuckinbeliev able!!

Do you know who Phil Graham is?
-
obama never agreed to the debates.
That's the point....Obama never agreed.
McCain would mop the floor with Barry.
don't tell me what's obvious. What's obvious is Obama's omission about recieving the second most amount of money from Fannie Mae.
-
Your boy Obama has as much to do with this as anyone who got us into this mess. Mother F**ker couldn't balance a checkbook let alone solve a financial mess >:(

So a Motherf**ker who cannot balance a checkbook managed to graduate from Harvard Law, magna Cum Laude?
Where did you get your law degree from?

I see.

There are plenty of "magna Cum Laude" Yale and Harvard grads in Washington (both parties) who couldn't qualify for a credit card if they were not in congress or the senate. We have no idea what Obama's or McCain's credit is like (though I'm sure if you knew McCain's or Palin's you'd have posted it by now :P). Yet we entrust our money to these people. We need so much more transparency of what's going on with all this stuff.
Dude, you gotta stop hanging your hat on the education kick. Book knowledge does not equate the decision-making skills necessary to run the country.
Drug dealers make better decisions than our current congress and senate. >:(

i agree - which is why I said neither obama nor mccain is in that meeting - because they're not qualified.
They're not economy guys. Mccain flying to DC to heroicly save the day is all theater. He doesn't understand the advanced concepts they're talking about, and neither does Obama.
Coach said obama can't balance a checkbook. I found that to be a lie.
-
Mccain flying to DC to heroicly save the day is all theater.
I think his thing is more of the issue with transparency. There is none right now, and I believe his proposals are all about tracking what's done with the money. Sarah Palin does this with her state. The people can track the money. We need to be able to track what our decision makers are even thinking before they waste more and more of our money.

:o Tell me you're joking! You can't possibly be serious?!
Palin is about everything except transparency!
Her administration is all about secrecy! Why do you think her administration embraced yahoo over gov email?
So they wouldn't have to be accountable! The only thing transparent about Palin is the fact that she is a megalomaniacal, hypocritical unqualified God-bot a hairs breadth away from creating complete, total, and irretrievable world chaos, and is wholely unfit to be VP or POTUS. She has no respect around the world outside of the lobotomized reptilian bible belt, and her support there is waining away very quickly.
