Title: Friends and training partners..........
Post by: michael arvilla on September 28, 2008, 01:12:06 PM
Now that i look back i realize i was fortunate to train with some really "genetically gifted" guys,at the time i just saw them as my friends (and i took the fact that they both had 20" arms as normal...and i had to catch up to them!)
Both Stan and Chris weighed around 270 -280 lbs at around 5 ft 10" 5 ft 9" each.....i was always the smallest weakest one out of the three (when i met them i had just joined the gym and looked pretty much like i do in this "before pic" lol except with longer hair)
i soon got in with their crew (which was by and large powerlifters who competed in bench press contests)
i slowly but surely grew bigger and stronger (and was in fact the first one to reach 300 lbs in our crew altho most of it was fat lol)
i never realized how lucky i was to train and learn from these guys (we all just ate/lifted and "bounced" in night clubs in those days)
now they are both married/with kids and one is fat and the other pretty skinny
it's been a long and crazy ride (this thing called bodybuilding) and i have had a blast!
(no lol im not done yet!)
as i get older and reflect tho................those were great times!  (when all we had to worry about was "lifting and eating and having fun")
just thought id share with you guys
 :)

We were always "ragging on" each other..............a couple things that stand out
I Told Chris after i had taken a short layoff from the gym "Muscle has memory"
he said "yours must have amnesia then"
Another time.................i took my T-Michael sweat shirt off in the gym in front of "the crew" and said "i just wanna see what's going on with my physique"
Chris says very loudly " Not Much"

we musta went thru about 5 gyms and 8 - 10 niteclubs over a 15 yr period!
(Both met there future wifes in the niteclubs that we worked at)

good times!

Chris Hadley................ye s he did! ....only bodybuilding show he ever did he won his class (New Englands Bodybuilding championships sometime early mid 1990s) without really even dieting (he ate pizza hut- pizza before pre-judging)
along with meeting and working with guys like Paul Demayo we also met his "dealer"and chris got hooked on painkillers and eventually Heroin .........never competed again, tore his bicep working construction and is "all done" now
Chris IMO could have been a pro (and a good pro!)
quads, calves he had all the body parts in freakish size!

If that was his first & only show....it's obvious if he stayed with it a few years he could have easily won a card

Thanks TB and Tombo.................bu t as you can see in that pic i have wide shoulders (wide clavicle structure whatever you want to call it) but Chris is like "barndoor wide" it was crazy!

such a waste of bodybuilding potential (to be honest with you guys Chris didn't even train hard at all/in the middle of us working out he would go sit at the juice bar and say "i pulled something" or "I'm thrashed dude/I'm done" ...every single workout, you hear about guys who would "just look at a weight and would grow" that' was Chris,it was frustrating to me that i worked twice as hard and he looked twice as good!)
and diet..................Ch ris ate Wendy's, McDonald's,pizza etc every day (i used to eat like he did and i got soooo fricking fat/while he stayed lean) the day of his show like i said we ate at pizza hut (BEFORE prejudging)
after Chris won his class at "The New Englands" some supplement company used his picture and gave him free
supps",also when we met Victor Richards and Jean Pierre Fux they both asked Chris when his next show was (before he had ever stepped foot on a stage) and pretty much ignored me
i was always playing "catch -up" it was incredibly motivating! (being the low man on the totem pole does have it's advantages ) both Chris and Stan could "rep-out" with 405 lbs on the bar and could do a single with 500 lbs (the whole gym used to stop and watch us bench)
i would put 405 on the bar and come sooo close but not get it (then Chris would hop under it and do 8 reps easy!) frustrating!!!!!!.............it took a long time but i finally got there!
we were all close to 300 lbs and pretty strong (had a blast working in niteclubs with fights etc )
but with guys like Paul DEmayo,Mike Matatrazzo in the gym we were always motivated to be better (we actually used to travel to go to the gyms with these guys for motivation) it was a great time in my life!
i thought we would always be friends/training partners ...........now both of them don't even work out/go to a gym (one is addicted to drugs the other is fat and his wife bosses him around like a lil bitch)
for awhile tho we were "Kings Of The World!"                           :)

yea..............i always thought tho if i worked twice as hard (trained harder/dieted harder just worked harder in general) i could equal or surpass him ......that's not the case/superior genetics will always win in the end

(kinna disillusioned me,it was more what you were born with...rather than whoever works the hardest wins!)

i remember one time Chris said to me "if it was who works/trains the hardest Mike you would be MR OLYMPIA",........................another thing i heard a lot back then from guys in the gym
"Why are you training so hard Mike? it's not like you are getting ready for a show"

soo many good times memories/some of the guys in my area/gym included Fred Bigot and Craig Licker...you guys ever heard of them?

one time i was in an "NPC" tank -top at my gym when Paul DEmayo took his T-michael off and started hitting some "shots" in the mirror
i threw my shirt back on soooo fast my friends were cracking up!

I agree.

Mike we must have crossed paths at one time or another.  I grew up in Arlington, but I trained at World's in Somerville, Gold's in Everett, and Nautilus in Revere from 89 to 96.  You must know Eric Canisco (sic?), Matt Mclaughlin, and Kevin McGaunn.

Drug supplier gets 30 months

By Lee Hammel TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF
lhammel@telegram.com

WORCESTER— A bodybuilder who supplied a drug ring that included two police officers and a businessman was sentenced yesterday in U.S. District Court to 30 months in prison — less than half the minimum sentence that federal sentencing guidelines call for.

Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV cited “diminished capacity” in Matthew McLaughlin, 35, of Kittery Point, Maine, as well as a criminal record that overstates how serious a threat Mr. McLaughlin is, in letting Mr. McLaughlin escape the 70 to 87 months advised by the federal guidelines. The 2-1/2 years to which Judge Saylor sentenced Mr. McLaughlin was less than the 5 years Assistant U.S. Attorney George W. Vien asked for, although more than the “time served” — about 17 months — that defense lawyer Janice Bassil suggested.

Mr. McLaughlin at one time scored 67 on an IQ test — mildly retarded, Ms. Bassil said — and attempted suicide when he was 12 because of mental disorders. Virgil Lynch, Mr. McLaughlin’s uncle from Island Falls, Maine, who was not permitted to speak during the sentencing hearing, said afterward that seven of his cousins committed suicide.

While Judge Saylor said he “has some doubt” that Mr. McLaughlin, who attended college and has succeeded at other tasks, is mildly retarded, he said he believes Mr. McLaughlin has enough history of mental illness to be considered to have diminished capacity. The judge also said it was rare for someone with such an extensive criminal history — which includes driving under the influence of alcohol and uttering false prescriptions — to have no record of violence or threats or property damage.

Ms. Bassil said that Mr. McLaughlin never viewed GBL, the drug to which he pleaded guilty of conspiracy to distribute, as a recreational drug or a date rape drug. She said he began bodybuilding at age 16 and once won the Mr. Teenage America title.

“The reality of bodybuilding is the use of steroids,” she said, and Mr. McLaughlin believed what she called the myth that steroids help to build muscles — a problem that she noted continues to be rampant in professional sports nationally and internationally. Ms. Bassil said that he was given the drug by the people who trained him in bodybuilding, beginning when he was a teenager.

Ms. Bassil said Mr. McLaughlin bought the GBL — a drug he started using before it became illegal in 2000 — that he supplied to his codefendants on the Internet and was not sophisticated enough to convert it into the more dangerous drug of GHB that bodybuilders seek.

Judge Saylor fined the defendant $1,000 and ordered him to be under probationary supervision for three years upon release from prison, saying that his main concern in giving Mr. McLaughlin so little prison time that the Bureau of Prisons will not admit him to a 500-hour drug rehabilitation program is that he needs rehabilitation and strict structure.

Mr. Vien, the prosecutor, urged a sentence of 10 months under the guideline minimum, because of Mr. McLaughlin’s diminished capacity and record, acknowledging it is unusual to recommend a break for the supplier rather than the distributor in a drug ring. But he said that co-defendant Thomas J. Vigliatura “is the most evil” in this case. Mr. Vigliatura, also a bodybuilder, has pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy and four counts of distribution of the drugs GHB and GBL.

Mr. Vigliatura, who is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 15 on those charges, was sentenced last week to six months for contempt of court and previously allegedly threatened to call a hit man to get Mr. Vien to back off the prosecution. The government intends to seize $50,000 from Mr. Vigliatura; his former business, T Vig’s Sports Supplements Unlimited, 98 West Boylston St.; and his former home at 118 Santoro Road.

Former Worcester police Officer Brian W. Benedict, who pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute GHB and conspiring to possess cocaine and Ecstasy, is scheduled to be sentenced tomorrow. Former Worcester police Officer Heriberto Arroyo, who was convicted by a jury of conspiracy to possess GHB and GBL and conspiracy to possess cocaine and Ecstasy, is scheduled for sentencing Aug. 30.

Mr. McLaughlin pleaded guilty to a single count of distributing GBL, a substance that can be converted into GHB, which is considered to be a date rape drug and an aid to bodybuilding.

Mr. Vien told the judge that a 5-year sentence is “not a life-destroying sentence” and would give Mr. McLaughlin a chance to get his life together in prison, while Ms. Bassil contended that it would destroy his life. Mr. McLaughlin briefly addressed Judge Saylor before the sentence, saying he has trouble speaking but “give me a chance to be back with my family.”

Yea Matt's been heading for trouble for years now (and got arrested after i had moved to FL)
Good kid just got into the recreational drugs like a lot of people did (lotta my friends/bodybuilders)

had a ton of potential as a bodybuilder (ruined it with insulin etc got a huge distended gut)

sad to see what's happened to a lot of these Massachusetts bodybuilders (Demayo dead, most of the rest i know all messed up on drugs/don't even work out anymore)
lost homes,lost businesses...gone to jail

Here is a picture of me (in highschool around 18 yrs old) on the boulevard in Gloucester Mass sitting on the trunk of my 1973 Plymouth Road Runner (340 "six-pack",pistol grip shifter),from the right that's me,my girlfriend (lol my first girlfriend ever!)and my friend and her cousin George) ..........lonnggg time ago

You had some incredible cars- a 6 pack plymouth RR and an Super Sport 396 Camero. Amazing cars both.

I have a friend (Larry Muirhead-Mr Arizona) that had either a 68 or 89 SS396 Camero, just like yours, and he sold it in 1989 for $20K in San Diego. I think it might have had the retractable headlights-did the SS 396 come with those????? The guy who bought it was hot rodding it around the ebach areas and crashed and was killed.

When I worked at a gas station in HS an old lady about 60 came in with a Plymouth Cuda, 340 six pack and beefed out. Turns out she was the national record holder in over 50 drag racing or something similar, cool car and grandma.

Great thread! Makes me think back on all the gyms I've been to and trained at, all the training partners I've had and the great times I've enjoyed thanks to Bodybuilding. I'm just a recreational bodybuilder but It's been in my blood since I was 9. I've had the great opportunity to do a lot of travelling overseas during my life and I never gone anywhere without finding the closest or best gym in town.  Seen a lot of cool places and trained in a lot of dumps.  From Superclubs in Thailand and Kuwait to dumps the size of the home gym you had when you were 14 in Sri Lanka.  I can really say I wouldn't trade any of the experiences for the world.  Thanks for the thread and bringing back the memories.

Pat
