Gwen Ifill
The moderator of Thursday's vice-presidential debate is writing a book to come out about the time the next president takes the oath of office that aims to "shed new light" on Democratic candidate Barack Obama and other "emerging young African American politicians" who are "forging a bold new path to political power."
Gwen Ifill of the Public Broadcasting Service program "Washington Week" is promoting "The Breakthrough," in which she argues the "black political structure" of the civil rights movement is giving way to men and women who have benefited from the struggles over racial equality.
Ifill declined to return a WND telephone message asking for a comment about her book project and whether its success would be expected should Obama lose. But she has faced criticism previously for not treating candidates of both major parties the same.
During a vice-presidential candidate debate she moderated in 2004 – when Democrat John Edwards attacked Republican Dick Cheney's former employer, Halliburton – the vice president said, "I can respond, Gwen, but it's going to take more than 30 seconds."
Well, that's all you've got," she told Cheney.
Ifill told the Associated Press Democrats were delighted with her answer, because they "thought I was being snippy to Cheney." She explained that wasn't her intent.
But she also was cited in complaints PBS Ombudsman Michael Getler said he received after Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin delivered her nomination acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn., earlier this month.
Some viewers complained of a "dismissive" look by Ifill during her report on Palin's speech. According to Getler, some also said she wore a look of "disgust" while reporting on the Republican candidate.
At that time she said, "I assume there will always be critics and just shut out the noise. It is surprisingly easy."
Ifill, who also works with her network's "NewsHour," is making preparations to moderate this week's debate between the two candidates for vice president, Palin and Democratic Sen. Joe Biden.. She told BlackAmericaWeb.com she thinks debates "are the best opportunity most voters have to see the candidates speaking to issues."
She said she is concerned only about getting straight answers from candidates.
"You do your best to get candidates to answer your question. But I also trust the viewers to understand when questions are not answered and reach their own conclusions," Ifill told BlackAmericaWeb.
"Four years ago, when neither John Edwards nor Dick Cheney proved capable of answering a question about the domestic epidemic of AIDS among African-American women, viewers flooded me with reaction," she said.
She said she will make her own decisions about what questions to ask, adding "the big questions matter."
In the Amazon.com promotion for her book, Ifill is described as "drawing on interviews with power brokers," such as Obama and former Secretary of State Colin Powell.
In an online video promoting her book, she is enthusiastic about "taking the story of Barack Obama and extending it."
It focuses on four people, "one of them Barack Obama of course," she said.
"They are changing our politics and changing our nation," she said.
On Amazon.com, Ifill is praised for her "incisive, detailed profiles of such prominent leaders as Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, and U.S. Congressman Artur Davis of Alabama."
"Ifill shows why this is a pivotal moment in American history," the review says.
She told AP her view of Obama: "I still don't know if he'll be a good president."
She also describes how she met him at the 2004 Democratic convention and since then has interviewed the Illinois senator and his family.
She also boasted that by the time of the debate, "I'll be a complete expert on both" Palin and Biden.
The debate will be held at Washington University in St. Louis, which has posted information about the evening's events online.
Ifill's profile there describes her as a longtime correspondent and moderator for national news programs and includes her service as moderator of the 2004 debate between Edwards and Cheney.
However, there's no mention of her upcoming book. Nor does the website for the Commission on Presidential Debates, which is organizing the meetings of the candidates, mention her book.

LOL @ pre-empting palin's meltdown. i saw this as their 'diffuse' story.
-
Freaking amazing. You have the head of Fannie Mae working for Obama, you have Obama who worked for ACORN and now this!!
Freaking sad!

It must be nice for Obama/Biden to have the cards stacked for you.
-
LOL @ pre-empting palin's meltdown. i saw this as their 'diffuse' story.
Its not pre-empting anything. Its a fact sir.
Im just saying. She is doing a good enough job herself. She doesnt need help to fail at this point.
-
it does look bad. a conflict you'd like to avoid. Good on drudge for exposing this in a big way, headlined. however, she asks both candidates the same questions.
If palin brings her game, she delivers the election to Mccain, hands down. MAJOR bounce if she owns biden.
If she looks like she has in interviews - like a blubbering idiot - you can blame anyone you want, but the responsibility is on Palin.

WOW - This is scathing!!
She clearly supports John McCAin
Jesus Christ - this kind of partinsanship should be left in church where it belongs

Both candidates are surrounded by top financial guys. This is fuct up, but required, as they're the only ones who understand the complex economy. No man/woman running understands things at that level.
So you can't shit on either guy - they're both smart enough to surround themselves with people who run the economy, cause that's the only way to guide or fix it.
This moderator thing is a conflict, but both candidates get the same questions, and they either know the answers or they don't.
-

I didn't catch that. You might be right. That's a pretty rough thing for her to say about Obama.
Do you think she'll give Palin easy Qs on purpose?

I totally agree... the difference is... McCains Campaign manager was getting money up til last month, as far as I know thats illegal once you start running a national campaign.
One of Clintons top advisors had to be removed due to the same thing...

I disagree
I don't thing economy or the credit markets are all that complicated
I also don't think McCAin is smart enough
i.e. it's not that complicated but McCain is still too dumb to understand or ....best case he get's it and just doesn't give a fuck
-

I was kidding
if anything, I think Ifill will be very gentle on Palin

Funny how you went from "they both have to answer the same questions" when you thought Biden had the edge to "Palin might get easy questions" when you changed your mind ;D
Pathetic
-
i thought it'd be fun to mess with the mccain supporters.
she should probably hand off the interview to someone else, to be honest. reporters arent' supposed to comment for good reason.

Mc Cains CAMPAIGN MANAGER was on Fannie Maes pay Roll until last month... Please comment on this...
The HEAD of Fannie Mae? Please go correct your Facts... a Fannie Mae EXEC left them and has been working for Obamas campaign for a while now...
1. What does this have to do with the VP Debate.
2. Rick Davis (dude in question) was a Consulttant whos company was doing bussiness with Fannie Mae. He apparently left the consulting firm in 2006. This is really irrelevant as its really a non issue. Look at who Fannie and Freddie got behind with their political contributions. They have been in bed with the democratic leadership for years (Barney Frank, Pelosi, Chris Dodd) and recently been huge Obama supporters.
-
LOL
-
Would that be the same Gwen Ifill that's personal friends with Condie? Does anyone watch Washington Week in Review?
-
How does asking the exact same question to both candidates constitute as "rigging" for one side.
Now if you want to say that the debate is rigged for Obama/Biden because McCain made a stupid choice in VP, then you have a point. If not, you only have excuses.
-
Questions are being raised about PBS anchor Gwen Ifill's objectivity after news surfaced that she is releasing a new book promoting Barack Obama and other black politicians who have benefited from the civil rights struggle.
Ifill is moderating Thursday night's vice-presidential debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin. Her book, "The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama," is due to be released about the same time the next president takes the oath of office.
In her book, Ifill contends that the black political structure of the civil rights movement has cleared the way for post-racial politicians to ascend to new heights.
Now some are wondering whether Ifill can be fair and balanced, and whether she should be the moderator of Thursday's 9 p.m. ET debate.
"Clearly her books aren't going to do as well unless Obama wins, so it looks like she has some investment, literally, in one candidate or the other. And she's supposed to be sitting there as a neutral arbiter during the debate," said NPR's Juan Williams, a FOX News contributor. "I think the world of Gwen Ifill but I know there's a perception problem."
Web site WolrdNetDaily first reported on the Ifill book Tuesday night.
FOX News political analyst Michelle Malkin argued in a post on National Review that Ifill is "so far in the tank for the Democratic presidential candidate, her oxygen delivery line is running."

Maybe Fox can get one of their "fair and balanced" sock puppets to fill in.
-
If Palin brings her game, she delivers the election to Mccain, hands down. MAJOR bounce if she owns biden.
True!
-
True!
We've already seen her "game"
Her only hope is to bring someone else's game...and voice too

how does any of this mean it's rigged? That one they did at the church, now there is rigged. Is there any indication of actually rigging here? Where do you guys find someone who isn't favoring one or the other to moderate?
-

Yeah, the Saddleback Church Forum was so 'rigged' that another network tried to follow the same format two weeks later.
That was the next best thing to the two candidates going on the road together and doing town hall meetings. I wish they would do that.
-

When I found out Jim Lerher (sp) was doing the moderating in the first debate, I was a little worried but I personally thought he did an excellent job and was fair. But now I see this it makes me think how much the left hate Palin and lie about her on a daily basis. Will this moderator pull a Charlie Gibson? Will the questions be one sided? Is PBS pulling the "good guy" "bad guy" scenario?
-

How was that rigged? The same questions were asked to each candidate.
-
You guys are overeacting. This isn't a big deal. Neither is the fact that the democrats pushed to have an earmark of several hundreds of millions be allocated to a crooked urban housing organization currently being investigated by the FBI for fraud with ties to the Obama campaign. Neither is the fact that McCain has publicly called for oversight of Freddie and Fannie Mae for years now. Neither is the fact that Chris Dodd who blames this mess on the Bush administration, is responsible for overseeing bank regulation. Neither is the fact that Barney Frank who also blames this on the Bush administration was one of the foremost supporters of the urban housing development lobby which encouraged mortgage companies to give home loans to unqualified applicants. Neither is the fact that 40% of the democrats voted against the bailout bill, even though they blame the republicans for the bailout not getting passed.
To be worried about the fix being in for a wholly irrelevant VP debate where a race card jockey Obama boot licking bore like this woman ( who broke her ankle this morining by the way) is almost comedic. The fix has been in for a while.
-
She should recuse herself and let someone else give the debate.
She should never have accepted the offer, while writing a book released on inauguration day. She will make a lot more $ if obama wins the election, obviously.
The repubs seem to want her to stay - they can blame a potential Palin loss on hard Qs.
-

First off, Obama's not debating in the VP debate. Two, a moderator simply asks preempted questions that come from voters. There's no way a moderator can influence a debate

That's not true, but it's obvious when they do; remember the anti-Obama debate with George Stephanopoulos.

Update: McCain campaign didn’t know about book
By Michelle Malkin
September 30, 2008 10:13 PM
My first syndicated column of the week, filed this afternoon, shines light on PBS anchor Gwen Ifill, who will moderate Thursday’s only vice presidential debate. Try as she might to deflect questions about her impartiality, her biases — and her conflict of interest — are clear. But don’t you dare breathe a word about any of this. You know what will happen if you do…
RACIST!
Sidenote: TVNewser reports that Ifill has broken her ankle, but she’s still going to do the debate. But will she disclose her conflict of interest? Inquiring minds want to know.
Ask the Commission on Presidential Debates if she will acknowledge her conflict of interest: 202-872-1020.
And here’s the e-mail address of Janet H. Brown, Executive Director of the Debates Commission: jb@debates.org
Hopefully, their email system works better than the House.
Tons of readers recommend that Sarah Palin open her debate remarks by congratulating Ifill on her book and asking her to tell everyone the title.

A debate “moderator” in the tank for Obama
by Michelle Malkin
Creators Syndicate
Copyright 2008
My dictionary defines “moderator” as “the nonpartisan presiding officer of a town meeting.” On Thursday, PBS anchor Gwen Ifill will serve as moderator for the first and only vice presidential debate. The stakes are high. The Commission on Presidential Debates, with the assent of the two campaigns, decided not to impose any guidelines on her duties or questions.
But there is nothing “moderate” about where Ifill stands on Barack Obama. She’s so far in the tank for the Democrat presidential candidate, her oxygen delivery line is running out.
In an imaginary world where liberal journalists are held to the same standards as everyone else, Ifill would be required to make a full disclosure at the start of the debate. She would be required to turn to the cameras and tell the national audience that she has a book coming out on January 20, 2009 – a date that just happens to coincide with the inauguration of the next president of the United States.
The title of Ifill’s book? “Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama.” Nonpartisan my foot.
Ifill’s publisher, Random House, is already busy hyping the book with YouTube clips of Ifill heaping praise on her subjects, including Obama and Obama-endorsing Mass. Governor Deval Patrick. The official promo for the book gushes:
“In The Breakthrough, veteran journalist Gwen Ifill surveys the American political landscape, shedding new light on the impact of Barack Obama’s stunning presidential campaign and introducing the emerging young African American politicians forging a bold new path to political power…Drawing on interviews with power brokers like Senator Obama, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, Vernon Jordan, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, and many others, as well as her own razor-sharp observations and analysis of such issues as generational conflict and the ‘black enough’ conundrum, Ifill shows why this is a pivotal moment in American history.”
Ifill and her publisher are banking on an Obama/Biden win to buoy her book sales. The moderator expected to treat both sides fairly has grandiosely declared this the “Age of Obama.” Can you imagine a right-leaning journalist writing a book about the “stunning” McCain campaign and its “bold” path to reform timed for release on Inauguration Day – and then expecting a slot as a moderator for the nation’s sole vice presidential debate?
Yeah, I just registered 6.4 on the Snicker Richter Scale, too.
Despite the protestations of her colleagues that she will be fair, Ifill has appeared on numerous radio and TV talk shows over the past several months to cash in on her access to the Obama campaign. She recently penned a fawning cover story on the Obamas for Essence magazine that earned much buzz. The title? “The Obamas: Portrait of an American Family.” A sample of Ifill’s hard-hitting investigative journalism, illustrated with Kennedyesque photos of the Obamas and children posing at home on the backporch and by the piano:
“Barack Obama is sitting in the back of his rented luxury campaign bus with its granite counters and two flat-screen TVs. The Illinois senator’s arms are wrapped around his wife, Michelle, whom he doesn’t get to see much these days. At this very moment he is, of all things, singing.”
During the Democratic National Convention, Ifill offered her neutral analysis before Michelle Obama’s speech on NBC News: “A lot of people have never seen anything that looks like a Michelle Obama before. She’s educated, she’s beautiful, she’s tall, she tells you what she thinks and they hope that she can tell a story about Barack Obama and about herself…”
During the Republican National Convention, the PBS ombudsman fielded numerous complaints about Ifill’s coverage of Sarah Palin’s speech. Wrote Brian Meyers of Granby, Ct.:
“I was appalled by Gwen Ifill’s commentary directly following Gov. Sarah Palin’s speech. Her attitude was dismissive and the look on her face was one of disgust. Clearly, she was agitated by what most critics view as a well-delivered speech. It is quite obvious that Ms. Ifill supports Obama as she struggled to say anything redemptive about Gov. Palin’s performance. I am disappointed in Ms. Ifill’s complete disregard for journalistic objectivity.”
Like Obama, Ifill, who is black, is quick to play the race card at the first sign of criticism. In an interview with the Washington Post a few weeks ago, she carped: “[N]o one’s ever assumed a white reporter can’t cover a white candidate.”
It’s not the color of your skin, sweetie. It’s the color of your politics. Perhaps Ifill will be able to conceal it this week. But if the “stunning” “Breakthrough” she’s rooting for comes to pass on January 20, 2009, nobody will be fooled.

"Off the record, every suspicion you have about MSM being in the tank for O is true. We have a team of 4 people going thru dumpsters in Alaska and 4 in arizona. Not a single one looking into Acorn, Ayers or Freddiemae. Editor refuses to publish anything that would jeopardize election for O, and betting you dollars to donuts same is true at NYT, others. People cheer when CNN or NBC run another Palin-mocking but raising any reasonable inquiry into Obama is derided or flat out ignored. The fix is in, and its working."

First off, Obama's not debating in the VP debate. Two, a moderator simply asks preempted questions that come from voters. There's no way a moderator can influence a debate
Actually in these presidential and VP debates, the moderator selects the questions and doesn't even share them with staff for fear of leaking them.
In Mccain/Obama debate I, one man on earth knew the Qs - the moderator.
Also, if the Qs were selected from viewer input, whoever picks the 10 or 15 questions could choose tougher ones. if they give palin dreamy Qs about her upbringing vs. 'what did S. Korea do wrong against NK'? makes all the difference.
-
You know, I don't see anybody else asserting Obama's divinity except for his nay-saying detractors. The ploy has no traction.
It's true. What other candidate causes people to cry and get shivers up their leg when he gives speeches? He has gotten a disproportionate amount of positive media coverage. He has been given a pass on a number of questionable decisions and relationships. They might as well fit him for his white robe already.
-

So you think Obama is getting a pass from the liberal media.
I disagree. You sight one quote from Matthews as seemingly definitive. Haven't you heard Matthews discuss Big Mac over the years? The obligatory 'straight talk', 'maverick', 'straight shooter', 'tells it like it is' was/is repeated ad nauseum. Did that talk of St. McCain slip your mind?
If a candidate does something patently stupid, like suspending a campaign to look presidential in the face of a financial crisis or letting an manifestly inferior vp candidate field softball questions, then that's a situation of their own making. What do you expect, the media close their eyes to this like they did with the Bush election cycle of 2000?
On the other hand, the sitting back and taking shots at Obama as a messiah w/ a white robe is much easier than debating platforms.
-
Palin is milking it.
On Hannity radio, she said because of Gwen's book, sh's now the underdog in the debate.
Yeah, that's why. Has nothing to do with the idiotic answers she can't stop giving Couric.
-

He is absolutely getting a pass. For example, why isn't the media jumping all over the contention that Obama tried to delay a troop withdrawal agreement in Iraq until after the election? That's pretty outrageous. Not one question about it at the first debate.
I've previously posted a snippet showing how Obama gets more positive media coverage than McCain.
