Yea if they snapped during your 155lbs dead lifts that would be a tragedy.

try over 400lbs-thats my max
-
I would say rarely. Ones in my gym years old people still use.
Though buy good quality ones and for your peace of mind replace them every 2 years or so.
Thoigh i wouldnt worry

Why use straps at all? Why not just develop your grip. Deadlifts for sets of 10 will give you all the grip you need in a couple months. People use straps and then wonder why they have the forearm development of a crack addict.

be careful using worn straps. ive also had a pair break.
i was working my way up and had 455 on hte bar as my next intermediate set...i started the lift and exploded off the floor....SNAP!...my right strap broke. thankfully i didnt get hurt since it broke almost as soon as it left the floor. i wondered about what would have happened if i had been almost upright when it broke.
i suggest swapping out straps whenever they start looking worn. i could tell mine were starting to get old, but figured they were still good. i was wrong. since then i went ahead and bought about 3 new pairs so that i have them when i need them.
I was actually above the knees when mine broke, it just let loose. I bought another pair, but rarely use them now.

If you can't hold it, you can't lift it.

He's a pathological liar so I wouldn't take anything he says seriously

Dreadlord is right. The only time I've used straps is for bodybuilding. I absolutley forbid any of my athletes to use straps of anykind.

Straps = teh gay..

For bodybuilding its fine, for strength they are worthless and provide nothing.
-
Use seat belt nylon. Just loop it over your wrist, don't have a loop in it that you pass the end through like most commercial straps.
... or so I've read. My commercial straps are still doing ok, but my deadlift is nothing spectacular.
-
you know that it's a hardcore gym when you have to come strapped

I would disagree

I saw a kid get on the flat bench and wrap his straps around the bar.

hahahaha, i love when these guys throw the weight into the converstaion in a matter of factly way, 'i was benching and was on my 2nd warm up set with 550 which is no big deal for me" ;D
