i always found it weird that guy was a republican because he comes off pretty smart to me.

THink about it... A black man in the 60s coming up through the ranks? He probably had a ignorant boss like Coach ahead of him... Being a republican is what didn't hold him back... This was the Repubes way of saying :look were not racist we have a black man in our party thats high up!!" Because he is a "different black man"...

His boss was the U.S. Army dipshit. He came up through the ranks 2nd Lt. through General (all 10 steps) because he earned his stripes. In 1960 he was a Lieutenant and was still a Colonel in 1979...no one in the political world knew who the hell he was in the 60's. He had a white house fellowship in 71 and received his first political appointment in 1987. Great theory!

By the way.....
In the summer of 2007, Powell donated the maximum to John McCain's campaign.
