Palin on 'SNL' Earns Show Its Highest Ratings in 14 Years
Vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin shares a laugh as "Saturday Night Live" regulars take a stab at mocking her.

AP

Sunday, October 19, 2008

The entertainment summit of the season -- Sarah Palin and her impersonator, Tina Fey -- earned "Saturday Night Live" its best ratings in 14 years. But if you blinked, you might have missed it.

Fey was answering questions at a news conference, something Palin hasn't done yet as the Republican vice presidential nominee, when Palin walked on the stage. Fey beat a hasty retreat in the opening segment, walking past the real Palin with a barely perceptible nod.

If anyone was hoping for a side-by-side photo of the identically dressed women, they were out of luck.

Palin's guest shot, widely anticipated since Fey began imitating her a month ago, led "Saturday Night Live" to its highest mark in overnight Nielsen Media Research ratings since March 1994, when assaulted skater Nancy Kerrigan was guest host.

Although a complete audience estimate for the rest of the country won't be available until later in the week, it is likely to be around 14 million.

For the first half-hour, when Palin first came out, the audience was about 17 million. That's pretty impressive for a TV program around midnight. The week before, only two other shows in prime time had a bigger audience, Nielsen said.

Her running mate, John McCain, watched clips of the broadcast on Sunday.

"Did you catch Sarah Palin on 'SNL'?" he asked a crowd in Toledo, Ohio. "She did a great job."

In the show's opening, Fey's Palin said at a news conference: "First off, I just want to say how excited I am to be in front of both the liberal elite media, as well as the liberal regular media. I am looking forward to a portion of your questions."

Moments later, the camera cut away to the real Palin watching a television monitor alongside the show's executive producer, Lorne Michaels.

Palin stood quietly as Fey's "30 Rock" co-star Alec Baldwin came by, mistook Palin for Fey and pleaded with Michaels not to let the actor go onstage with the governor.

"This is the most important election in our nation's history and you want her, our Tina, to go out there and stand with that horrible woman?" Baldwin said.

When Michaels introduced him to Palin, Baldwin feigned embarrassment and replied: "I see. Forgive me. I feel I must say this: You are way hotter in person."

Palin got even, saying: "Thank you, and I must say, your brother Stephen is my favorite Baldwin brother." Stephen Baldwin is a born-again Christian who attended the Republican national convention in 2004.

Alec Baldwin ushered her onstage past Fey, where Palin delivered the show's traditional opening: "Live from New York, it's Saturday night."

Palin later appeared alongside Seth Meyers on "Weekend Update," declining to perform a rap song that had been written for her. Amy Poehler "filled in" for Palin as actors dressed as Eskimos, Palin's husband, Todd, and a moose danced across the stage.

"All the mavericks in the house, put your hands up," Poehler rapped, as a bopping Palin followed the instructions. "All the plumbers in the house, pull your pants up."

Palin's appearance had been confirmed by the McCain campaign a day earlier. "Saturday Night Live" had been reluctant to do so, feeling embarrassed when it announced Barack Obama would show up for the season's first show and he canceled hours ahead of time, but the early word created heavy anticipation.

Michaels owes Palin a debt of gratitude. "Saturday Night Live" so far this season has been up 76 percent over last year at this time, Nielsen said.

Even beyond that, the Fey skits have gone viral over the Internet, drawing more attention to the show. One study last week said only one-third of people who had seen Fey's impersonations did so on live TV; the rest saw them on DVRs or on their computers.

You don`t seem to understand....
Nobody is laughing with Palin, they are laughing AT HER and how close to home the skits are.  There is no fiction, but truth in jest.

Read the comments on the videos, you will see what I mean.  Total disaster for Palin.  Continues to accentuate her ignorance, general stupidty and extremism.  The caricature and the real thing are inseparable at this point. Not a good thing.  Nothing positive has come of this for the McCain Camp.  Only further ridicule.

Honestly, I don't think the rap skit crossed the line. I don't think the line 'mother-humpin moose' is very vice-presidential, I would have insisted on changing it to 'ugly nasty moose', ...but I really believed she could have done that sketch and demonstrated an incredible sense of humour just like McCain did at the dinner.  I'm sure a few of the earlier lines about mcCain being angry could have bee re-written so it wasn't as biting, ...but the main insult in my estimation was the opening skit. That set the tone, and it was all downhill from there. With it's single largest audience in history, ...I think she did put the final nail in the McCain-Palin coffin.  If you're going to make fun of yourself, ...do it in a way that displays your idiosyncracies as charming, not in a way that's belittling and undignified.

I too loved the part when the Todd character came out, and when Amy offed the moose, I totally lost it.  ;D
She should've done the rap routine herself. Think about it. How cool would it have been to see her pull it off?

ps: I would just LOVE to see Obama rapping on SNL, ...AFTER he wins the election.

Exactly!  That's why I think she should have done the rap routine herself.
People would have laughed WITH her. Look at how we all warmed up to the other guy at the dinner.
Even I saw a side to Mccain that night that I saw as positive and refreshing.
Palin once again proved she wasn't up to the task. And I cannot believe the campaign did not vet the script first.  ::)

Maybe instead of focusing on her "sense of humor" as possible VP of the USA she should be reading books on Foreign policy, the Constitution and every other area she's lacking as far as her education and experience.  That's the entire problem with America and our people.  They are all fucking dumbed down.  Life is all about having fun, laughing, and feeling good.  We are in dire times right now in this world.  There are more important things our leaders need to be focused on.  SNL and self parodies excluded.

You and I yes....................t he potential VP of the most powerful country in the world?  She hasn't even landed the job yet.......NO.  I just don't think being made fun of and laughing at yourself on mainstream t.v. is "letting your hair down and having a good laugh".  I correlate it with the whole parenting and being your kids friend instead of their parent mentality.  Is it better for a parent to be their kid's parent or their kid's best friend?  I'm sure according to the kid they'd love to have their parent by them beer and be their best friend instead of telling them to go clean their room and do their homework.  We are a country of children who need to stop screwing around and have a leader that tells us to clean up our room and do our homework instead of buying us beer.
