shoulder press on a bench without a backrest, envision the following scenario................ .......you walk into the gym ready to blast those cannonball delts into the ozone when you walk in all the benches with backrests are occupied by the 23 inch armed, 35 inch legged steroid bullies and they ain't movin' so you walk your massive 198 pound frame over to a free standing flat bench and press, what could you handle?
-
never tried it. give me an average % of what is normal compared to military press and ill give you a guess.

you know what im doin squad 315 for reps.
-
I think I could probably muster up a set of 9-10 with 315, I used to be stronger, but injury has forced me to tone it down.
-
But Quaker, what happens if I too am a 23" armed, 35" legged steroid bullie? Does this mean i'd have to do battle with one of the other present iron warriors?

I can do a military press with the bench at about 70 degrees, touching just below the chin, with 225 for 7 reps.
I can do push presses standing, touching the clavicle, with a shoulder-width grip, with 245 for 3 reps.
I think I could do 155 lbs seated without a back rest for 2-3 reps. This is a much harder exercise than you'd think. It's primarily core strength that limits your poundages.
i think part of the reason is that it's your shoulders and triceps alone doing the pressing, very hard to get the weight moving without using the upper chest and pushind back against the seat back for leverage.
-
i dont know... id imagine i could at least get 135...

that actually isn't bad weight for that movement if you're doing full reps, it's even harder with dumbbells, fuccking brutal.

Never done it with a barbell. Once with dumbbells and like you said... it's fucking brutal.

I think you can get a lot of pec action without a backrest too. Least pec involvement with a 90 degree backrest with the small of the back pushed against the pad throughout. Can't bend your back that way.

hahahaha, you'd have to have a spine made of jello or have the flexibility of a Yoga instructor.

You just need strong abs. :D Squeeze the bench with your thighs and lean back. :D
-
i'd say if you can press a pair of three figure dumbells or a big nasty bar loaded with a pair of big boys per side you'll have shoulders the size of bowling balls.

nice lifting slang quake hahahaha

Since Im wearing my tap out shirt today, I would walk over to the occupied back rested bench and with one arm pick it up and shake it like a rug expelling the 23 inch armed, 35 inch legged steroid bullies and continue to warm up with their working sets... ;D
